“How many kilos?” he asked, and I gasped when my mother said twenty. How on earth were we,
two women with no muscles to speak of, going to carry twenty kilos of mangoes all by ourselves? I
found out soon enough.
It was excruciating. Ma pulled the edge of her sari around her waist and heaved to lift one side of
the basket, while I lifted the other. We looked like Laurel and Hardy, tilting the basket, almost losing the
goods inside as we paraded down the narrow crowded aisles of Monda Market.
We reached the main road and set the basket down on the dusty pavement. My mother looked at
me and shook her head in distaste. “We will have to go home and you will have to change before we go
to Ammamma’s. I can’t take you looking like this and we have to take clothes for tomorrow anyway.”
We were all meeting at my grandmother’s house to make mango pickle. It was a yearly ritual and
everyone was pleased that I had come to India at the right time. I regretted my decision dearly. If I had
to pick a month, it should have been anything but blistering July. I was glad that Nick wasn’t there with
me because he would have melted to nothingness in this heat.
I wiped my neck with a handkerchief and stuck it inside my purse. I probably smelled like a dead
rat because I felt like one. My body was limp and the sun blazed down at eight in the morning as if in
its zenith.
A whole day at my grandmother’s house scared me. The potential for disaster was immense. I had
no idea how I was going to tiptoe around the numerous land mines that were most certainly laid out
for the family gathering, as always. When I was young it hadn’t mattered much. I used to find a way to
block out the bickering and the noise. But now I was an adult and I was expected to join in the bickering
and contribute to the noise. I was hardly prepared for either. In addition, I had to break my not-so-good
news to one and all—land mines would multiply.
It had just been three days, but I was already tired of being in India, at home, and especially tired
of my mother. My father and I got along well, but when it came to taking sides between his children
and his wife, Nanna knew which side his idli was smeared with ghee. According to him, Ma was always
right.
When Nate and I were younger and fought with Ma, Nanna would always support her. His logic
was quite simple: “You will leave someday,” he would say. “She is all I have got and I don’t want to eat
at some cheap Udupi restaurant for the rest of my life. She is right and you are wrong—always, end of
discussion.”
Calling my mother a nag was not a stretch—she was a super nag. She could nag the hell out of
anyone and do it with appalling innocence.
“No autos,” Ma complained airily, and looked at me as if I was somehow to blame for the lack of
auto rickshaws. “Why don’t you try and get one,” she ordered, as we stood on the roadside, unhappy in
the skin-burning heat, a large basket of mangoes standing slightly lopsided between us on the uneven
footpath.
I waved for a while without success. Finally, a yellow and black three-wheeler stopped in front of
us, missing by inches my toes that were sticking out of my Kohlapuri slippers.
With her usual panache Ma haggled over the fare with the auto rickshaw driver. They finally
decided on twenty-five rupees and we drove home holding the mango basket between us, making sure
none of the precious green fruits rolled away.

You are going to hear a speech by a speaker about students’ options after their SPM examination. Six sentences
have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32).

A very good afternoon to you, my beloved students,

I’m glad so many of you have turned up for this afternoon’s talk. At this moment, all your thoughts

and activities are geared towards doing well in your SPM examination. Once it is over, some of you may

feel lost. The purpose of my talk is to explain the options which are open to you after you have sat for

your SPM exams.

What you do after you SPM exams depends very much on whether you want to further your

studies. 27 Some of you may want to enroll yourself for practical courses like tailoring and

hairdressing. Others may want to become apprentices in electrical shops and mechanical workshops. It

is essential for you to be computer literate nowadays. 28 When you have formal training,

you can get better pay for your job.

For those of you who wish to continue your studies after your SPM, there are many options open

to you. 29 This programme enables you to complete one or two years of tertiary education

in Malaysia and the rest in a university overseas. You can also get your degree from a local university

if your situation does not allow you to go overseas.

Before getting your degrees, you can either choose to do your STPM, apply for a place in the

Matriculation or Polytechnics, or do Diploma programmes in the local university. 30 Each

course consists of core and elective subjects, which prepares you for university while allowing you to

explore different interests.

I’ve heard groans that it is difficult to score in STPM. Well, a grown-up baby no longer solely

depends on milk. As you move from Form 5 to Form 6, you cannot depend on memorising to score.

31 It would stand you in good stead regardless of whether you get your tertiary education

in Malaysia or overseas.

For those of you who are not able to make it to a university, don’t lose heart. 32

Ponder upon what I’ve said and be clear about what you want to do after SPM. A clear goal is like a

lighthouse in a storm.

Push-up is a fast and effective exercise for building strength in our arm muscles. It can be done anywhere
and doesn’t require any equipment. We will likely notice gains in upper body strength if we do push-ups
regularly.

B – Hakim, 16 years old
I usually do sit-up every day. It is an effective exercise which tones up our abdominal muscles. I’ll do a set
of 30 sit-ups, three times a week and I’m sure you will notice the difference in no time.

C – Johanthan, 18 years old
Swimming is great for everyone. It is an all-rounded exercise which tones up most of the body parts – the
arms, legs, stomach muscles, etc.

D – Yu Rou, 14 years old
I like to jog in the evening. It is an effective way to exercise our whole body. It also helps to burn away the
unnecessary body fats and builds our stamina too!

E- Yogawasri, 17 years old
Aerobics is a strenuous but effective workout that burns away excess body fats and also builds up the body’s
metabolic rate. It is ideal for those who dislike outdoor activities.

F – Aaron, 18 years old
Do not belittle the casual strolling in the evening. Believe it or not walking can result in weight loss because
it helps burn calories. Take deep breaths as you walk and you’ll feel healthier soon.

I’ve seen photos and videos of the beauty and magnificent views of underwater world, but what held me back was my fear of deep
water, a phobia I’ve had since almost drowned when I was seven years old. However, I enrolled in swimming classes while on a sabbatical
leave from work and then continued enrolling in a diving course. Over the course of a month, I went from being terrified of the deep sea
water to loving how weightless I felt in water. I was excited to see fishes, sea turtles, sharks, and the other sea animals.
During the diving course, I was overwhelmed by the ten modules full of theories. Further, I was tested on skills like mask and regulator
clearing, wearing and removing one’s Buoyancy Control Device under water, emergency actions in case of no oxygen, and so on. After a
week of confined water dives in the pool, open water dives in the sea, and very supportive peers and coaches, I finally became a certified
diver.
Going through any challenging experience that is far outside one’s comfort zone invariably brings with it numerous life lessons. Of
course, this experience taught me a lot about myself and my fears. As I see it, it’s a four-step process:
1. The first step is to accept and acknowledge your fear, not with anger or resentment, but with peace and equanimity. Everyone has fears,

the object and degree might vary, but we have all felt it in some form and at some point in time in our lives.
2. The next step is to observe it, not just at the superficial level, but as deeply as you possibly can. Where is the fear stemming from? What

is the root cause? How do you feel? How do you respond to it? What are its triggers? Are your concerns rational?

3. Once you understand your fear, try to visualise what overcoming it looks like. What is it likely to entail? What will you do if the fear
creeps in? How would you feel when you overcome it? Visualising success is often half the battle won, as it instills a certain degree of
confidence and hope, rendering what you’re seeking to do as a realistic possibility.

4. Visualising can help give you the necessary ammunition to act. Beyond a point, you just need to tell yourself to take that leap of faith
and jump into it head-on. If you succeed, it’s worth rewarding yourself, and even if you don’t, celebrate the fact that you had the courage
to give it a shot.

Remember, the journey is more important than the destination. I understood that at the end of the day, it was a mind game, and if I could
train my mind to overcome my fear and anxiety, I would be able to sail through this.

Speaker 2 : I used to keep track of my day-to-day spending in a record book, so that I don’t live beyond my means. Sometimes, we can
fall into the trap of thinking spending on big things is what gets us into trouble. But, it’s the little things that end up costing us
more.

Speaker 3 : For me, I think controlling the impulse to buy is one way to save money. The convenience of credit cards, ATMs and online
shopping makes it easier than ever to spend money. We often end up buying things we want rather than need. We need to exercise
self-control. Then, we will not be tempted to buy unnecessary things.

Speaker 4 : Meal planning is one of the easiest ways to save money. Keep a menu plan and shopping list. This helps us to spend less money
on weekly groceries. We can also save a lot of money by eating at home rather than at the restaurant.

Speaker 5 : I’d rather put aside a certain amount of money in the bank saving account monthly. ‘Start Small. Think Big,’ with a short- term
goal. We save more successfully when we set a short-term goal. For instance, it is better to save RM25 a week than setting a
goal to save RM100 a month as it is much more attainable. Once we reach the short-term goal, we’ll have created a habit of

As an English lecturer, I have the opportunity to be a mentor for two students from the United Kingdom (UK) who came to my
campus for their Student Placement Programme. This is a yearly collaboration project between my campus and the university of UK where
their students come here to gain teaching and learning experiences with our local students. The programme usually lasts for a month. What
I do is to bring the UK students to our campus to join our students in learning and to the nearby schools for teaching English lessons.
This year, I have Beth and Alice, two beautiful girls with blue eyes and blonde hair, who come to visit us. They stay in a condominium
during their visit. Before they go to the campus and schools, I advise them on the dressing ethics in the Malaysian school settings and explain
the cultural differences between the two countries.

Every morning, I fetch them and send them to our campus or schools. In the first two weeks, they join our students in the classes.
They easily get along with the students and they become friends. I could see my students are very excited to talk to them and interview them
with a lot of questions. They could also improve their English as they try to understand the British accent.
In the next two weeks, I bring Beth and Alice to a primary school. The school headmistress and teachers welcome them and the children
are very curious to see them. They stare at Beth and Alice with their eyes wide as they have never seen foreign people. The children speak to
Beth and Alice in Malay but they couldn’t understand, so I have to translate for them. In the school, we observe a teacher’s English lesson in
the class. Then, we plan a lesson and activities for the class together. When Beth and Alice conduct the English lesson in the class, surprisingly
the students could understand their instructions in English and take part actively in the activities. They even ask for their autographs at the
end of the lesson. The children are so cute!
One month has passed and it’s time for Beth and Alice to go back to their country. I believe this Student Placement Programme is
beneficial for everyone. I could see the excitement and enjoyment not only from our local students, but also from both Beth and Alice. What
is important is it allows our students the opportunity to speak with the native speakers. I am eagerly looking forward for the next batch of
UK students to come again for the Student Placement Programme.
