1. Simple Present Tense
Read the text below. The words in bold are in the simple present tense.
It is a sunny Sunday. I help my father to wash the car. Father sweeps the dried leaves
in the garden. Danny trims the flowering plants with a pair of garden scissors. Mother
prepares drinks and food in the kitchen.
The simple present tense is used to:
• show an action that is done often or every day
Example: 1. I help my father to wash the car.

• state universal truths or facts
Example: 1. The Earth rotates on its own axis.

2. Present Continuous Tense
Read the text below. The words in bold are in the present continuous tense.
She is watering the plants now. Logan and Sam are playing badminton.
Nathan is running in the 400-metre
event. The sisters are baking in the bakery.
Present continuous tense is an action that is still happening at the time of speaking. It is formed
with the verb ‘to be’ + verb +ing. The words is watering, are playing, is running, and is baking are
some examples of the present continuous tense.
Common English Mistakes
Do not leave out the suffix -ing from the verb:
✓ He is drawing a portrait of his mother.
✗ He is draw a portrait of his mother.
Use the correct subject-verb agreement (SVA):
✓ They are carrying books for their teacher.

3. Simple Past Tense
Read the text below. The words in bold are in the simple past tense.
Yesterday, I woke up and looked at the clock. I jumped out of bed and ran to the
bathroom. I took a shower. After that, I put on my clothes and went downstairs for breakfast.
I had a glass of milk and some bread. Just then, I saw the newspaper on the table. It was
the Sunday newspaper. It was a Sunday and I did not have to go to school.
The simple past tense is used to describe an action that happened in the past. As the story happened
yesterday, the verbs used are in the simple past tense. These include woke, looked, jumped, ran,
took, put, went, had, saw, was and did.
Common English Mistakes
Do not use the wrong tenses for the verbs:
✓ Yesterday, my sister and I visited our grandparents.
✗ Yesterday, my sister and I visit our grandparents.
✓ It rained heavily last night.
