LS 3.1.2 LS 3.1.4 STEAM Robots Robots teaching our youth? Yes, you have heard it right. It has been found that robots have positive effects on children with disabilities such as autism and attention deficit disorder. A study was conducted in Korea in 2010 on Engkey, the robotic teaching assistant. Engkey was found to be able to help children focus on lessons. This is a task that most teachers find challenging but Engkey does just that. More recently, developed robotic teaching assistant like NAO and Milo robots have since replaced Engkey. NAO, a two feet tall robotic teaching assistant resembles a toy. It does not have facial expression. NAO can improve the child’s ability to focus and interact with others. The use of robotic teaching assistant helps the special children recognise specific emotions. This helps them gain confidence to socialise and talk to other people. Children who utilise NAO eventually join the children in the mainstream classes. Milo, the robotic teaching assistant is also made to help children with disorders to socialize. Unlike NAO who has a plain, robotic face, Milo looks like a kid with spikey hair. Milo has facial expressions that help children learn to recognise them. Cameras in Milo’s eyes record the children’s reactions. This helps the teachers, parents and doctors to better understand these children. These robots as educational tools are great but their price tags are less so. Question English Form 1 PAK-21 TE 1 ACTIVITY 1 TeenHelpNet – To Spend or To Save TASK 1 In groups, read the situations in the blog below. Got a problem? Message Board Rashid, 14 I have been short of cash for the last three months. My parents give me an allowance of RM80 per week. This allowance covers my transportation to school, my breakfast and lunch. I spent quite a lot of my money for online games last two months. I borrowed some money from my sister last month. I am sure she won’t lend me any money this month. What should I do? Ruhaizat, 15 I love online shopping and I spend my free time browsing what interesting things there are. I tend to put them in the basket and all of a sudden there is so much to buy. I can’t decide what to buy and what to let go. I may need them and they are on offer. Perhaps I should work part time to get some money. What do you think? Star, 13 I am totally dissatisfied with the amount of allowance that my parents give me. With RM 50 for a week I can hardly live. Everything is expensive. I spend at least RM 10 a day at school. Well is that too much? I must admit I like to snack on food. They aren’t really that cheap. Well, it’s ok to snack right? After all, we are teenagers. Simsen, 14 I spend quite a lot of time on the Internet playing games and there’s no Wifi at home so you know where my money goes to. Right! It is spent at the cyber café near my house. So, how to budget with the RM 60 a week? Please tell me. LS 3.1.1 Do You Like Movies? The first cinemas were opened in the early 1900s. Movies then were recorded on film and were shown to audiences by being run through a projector on reels. Until 1920s movies were silent and were made in black and white. Words on the screen told the important parts of the story and a pianist played music at the same time as the film. Walt Disney’s first cartoon character, Mickey Mouse made its appearance in 1928. This was followed by Donald Duck. In 1937 Disney produced his full-length cartoon films, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Films became incredibly popular in America during 1930s and 1940s. This period was known as the golden age of cinema. Gone with the Wind starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, the most popular film of 1939 was the most successful film of all time until Titanic appeared in 1997.
