Learning a second language The ability to communicate in different languages is a crucial talent in today’s increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. It allows you to interact with people closer to home or thousands of miles away and better positions to compete and flourish in the global economy. There are many advantages of learning second language. One of them is you will be able to communicate with someone in their own language, which is said to be a wonderful privilege. No matter where you are, speaking the language makes you a local and you could make pals for life. In addition, being multilingual can provide you a distinct competitive advantage over your monolingual peers. No matter your industry or degree of competence, they are among the top eight talents needed for all professions, and the need for multilingual workers is skyrocketing. In fact, the number of American job postings particularly targeting multilingual workers more than doubled between 2010 and 2015. Employers are looking for experts who can serve and sell to a sizable community of foreign-born customers here at home as well as serve and sell to clients in new and expanding international markets. Speaking more than one language helps one’s memory, problem-solving and criticalthinking abilities, concentration, multitasking ability, and listening skills. They demonstrate better creativity and flexibility than monolinguals. Being bilingual or multilingual also helps prevent mental ageing and cognitive decline as we age. Besides that, people who are multilingual can use the Internet as true global citizens, consuming and evaluating content in various languages. The closest link to different cultures is through language. Understanding and appreciating the customs, beliefs, artistic expressions, and history of the people who speak a language are fostered by our ability to communicate in that language. Studies demonstrate that children who have learned a second language are more open to and have more positive attitudes about the culture connected with that language, which in turn fosters better tolerance, empathy, and acceptance of others.
