2 Tips & Techniques Short Communicative Message (Email) is writing an informal or formal email based on a given stimulus. It is tested in Part 1 of the SPM English 1119/2 paper. It is compulsory for students to answer this question. The number of words should be about 80 words. When writing informal and formal emails, think about: (a) how you begin and end emails to set the tone of the message – there are two parts to begin the email : the greeting and the way you address the reader. • Informal Emails – Convey a much more casual tone – address reader as a friend on a first name basis. – More personal – relay a tone similar to face-toface conversation – Examples: Hey Johan / Hi / Hi, Hani • Formal Emails – To convey respect by politely addressing the reader – Examples: Dear Professor Yanni Ismail / Dear Marketing Manager / To whom it may concern (b) the same rules apply to the end of the email. – Use the same tone you started the mail, whether casual or professional. – Thank the reader for his / her time and keep the context of the email in mind. Use Grammatical Devices appropriately: (a) The grammar should reflect the tone you want to convey. Avoid using contractions such as ‘don’t’ or ‘won´t’ in formal emails. Use the full word like ‘do not’ or ‘will not’. (b) Contractions are acceptable in informal emails when portraying a casual tone. (c) While writing about specific terms, be aware of colloquial terms and slang which might be appropriate for informal writing but not in formal emails. (d) Regardless of the email’s style, do pay attention to using correct grammar and punctuation and follow the best practices for formatting. (e) Ensure that the email is easy to read and convey a professional tone, regardless whether it is formal or informal. (f) To ensure readability, divide content into paragraphs. Make sure you break up the text into two or three paragraphs – this enables the reader to quickly see the key points. (g) Organize information to ensure it is not muddled or confusing to the reader. Ideally, a paragraph should not be longer than four lines in length. 2

By the end, the sum of those small efforts will be much greater than some fluke burst of fortune.

English SPM Part 3 – Article 74 Model Answer Good Parenting by Zaidi Zain Parents and children have a special bond of love and affection. This bond can never be replaced by any other form of relationship. As the saying goes, ‘blood is thicker than water’ - family relationships and loyalties are the strongest and most important ties. Parenthood requires dedication and sacrifice. So, what qualities should parents impart that would considered good parenting? Parenthood is a natural consequence of marriage and prospective parents should recognise their responsibilities. The father might resent the children as rivals for the mother’s attention. The mother finds her time is not hers anymore as household routine changes. Both parents should be willing to make sacrifices, including their career and accept their responsibilities. It is a universal truth that parents love their children. The children are the apple of the parents’ eyes and without doubt their pride and joy. But, love should in no way or at any time be considered as synonymous with pampering or spoiling the child. They should instead, instil qualities that can help the children face life with integrity and courage. Parents should set good examples and provide the right atmosphere conducive to growth of good character traits. A child learns good virtue or otherwise from the parents as like father like son. In general, good parenthood requires love and understanding. These two qualities can build a strong familial bond. Love must be wholesome but not blind and ignore discipline and moral values. Understanding means giving the child the opportunity to know what he wants and support when needed. Parents should be themselves and allow the children to be themselves, too - good parenting, love wisely. Polar bears are the global symbols of climate change and this is the take-off point of Williams’ book which begins with a cuddly cub named Nora. In early November 2015, a polar bear cub named Nora was abandoned by her mother at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, leaving her fate in the hands of veterinarians and zookeepers. There are frantic efforts to keep Nora alive and well, from the struggles of replicating polar bear milk to an hour-long surgery to fix a broken bone in her leg. Nora’s story as she is moved from zoo to zoo getting to know the keepers who care for her and her learning how to be a bear without her natural habitat, forms the storyline of the book. Introduction • Non-fiction – true story – survival and peril Storyline 1 • Early days of Nora – without mother – care of zookeepers

English SPM Part 3 – Review 129 The chapters about Nora are most entertaining. However, Williams goes beyond the life of a single bear as he presents a part scientific history and part adventure tale. He details the political battles over the existence of climate change, ethics of zoos and the already disastrous effects of global warming. His aim is to educate readers about the impact of climate change. The style of writing is informative, realistic and engaging. As commented by readers, it is sweeping and tender as it explores the tough and challenging relationship between humans and the natural world. Climate change is the most monumental task faced by humanity and the animal world. I feel that climate change is affecting not just the part of the world most of us are not likely to visit, but here at home we are already feeling the unwelcome change. As Dr Jane Goodall says, “A moving story of abandonment, love, and survival against the odds.” Storyline 2 • Scientific history and adventure tale – global warming Style of writing • Informative, realistic and most engaging Conclusion • Comments Recommendation Word Bank veterinarians – doctors qualified to treat diseased or injured animals, veterinary surgeons replicating – making an exact same thing or reproducing ethics – moral principles that govern the zoos when conducting activities realistic – showing a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected take-off point – start, beginning monumental task – to emphasize the wide extent of a project against the odds – against all expectations Idioms Info Corner A natural habitat is an ecological or environmental area where specific species live. It is the place in nature that particular specie calls home. Plants and other organisms all have natural habitats as well. Few creatures make the ice shelves of Antarctica their habitat, but water beneath the ice can provide rich natural habitats for multiple species

Upstream, we saw a bush completely alight with fireflies. The boat guide cleverly used a flashlight and a leaf to entice a few fireflies to leave their bush and fly into our boat. When the glowing fireflies landed on our hands, faces and life jackets, we were thrilled, speechless. I felt like a lighted Christmas tree. The next day, we hiked up the trails to the Botanical Gardens, looking out for butterflies and birds. We added exploring the rugged trails and staring up into the massive towering trees at Kinabalu National Park, Malaysia’s first World UNESCO heritage site. Then, we set off for the Poring Hot Springs famous for its 40-metre high Canopy Walkway. The walkway really took my breath away. After lunch, we went off in search of the famous endangered Rafflesia flower and the pitcher plant. We found specially tended plants. The Rafflesia is the world’s largest rarest flower, with a distinctive odour, lasting only two to three days. The “periuk kera” has a pitcher able to hold up to 3.5 litres of liquid. We had a wonderful holiday, bonding with nature. Goodbye, my animal and plant friends! for the time being! Here’s hoping you will breed well and healthily. I will come and see you again.
