Questions 9 to 18
Read the text below and choose the best word for each space. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B,
C or D on your answer sheet.
SOCIAL media has been a boon and bane to those stricken by last week’s floods, which crippled
many parts of Selangor. Affected residents took to various platforms to (0) capture their plight
and desperation while stuck on the rooftop of their submerged homes. Many shared their details on
WhatsApp to seek help (9) it began to dawn on them that help from the authorities wasn’t
forthcoming. They sent SOS to anyone when their family had (10) out of food and feared
their phone battery would soon go flat.
Thanks to Tik Tok, Facebook and Instagram, Malaysians have been able to share these video clips
as well as express their views without the necessity for media (11) . Non-governmental
organisations and the public seemed to be able to swing into action as they mobilised themselves
effectively, despite having (12) resources than the government.
Social media has enabled us to be at the scene of (13) areas, and it helped the media
understand the predicament of the victims while heaping praise and encouragement (14)
their countrymen and women who rose to the occasion to help each other, regardless of race. Indian
youths turned up to clean a mosque, an Indian family cooked for the residents and Malay women joined
Sikhs to prepare vegetarian food at a temple. And Malays helped an old Chinese aunty from a roof while
Chinese volunteers helped mop up the homes of the (15) Malay families. The best visual
was of an Indian woman who posted a video clip expressing her admiration for fellow Malaysians as the
Negaraku played stirringly as background music, which made for an uplifting experience.
Malaysia remains (16) to floods, landslides, haze and water pollution. The weather has
changed dramatically because of climate change. The fact is that temperature records in Malaysia have
indicated a spike, resulting in precipitation that may cause droughts and floods in various coastal areas as well as
(17) Malaysia’s natural resources. And for sure, last week’s floods, while more devastating
than usual, was not a once-in-100 years incident. It’s obvious that the army must now be mobilised and
deployed in greater numbers when such disasters happen again. In many countries, the army is plainly
visible in these areas.
The message of Malaysians is loud and clear. Instead of bickering about who should take charge of
the respective committees, the authorities should be aware that the public couldn’t care less about this.
They should execute their (18) more effectively when disaster strikes again.

Questions 19 to 26
You are going to read an extract from a story. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D)
and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet.
It’s the school holidays but the pandemic of COVID-19 and lack of cash had caused the Malaysians
to choose the staycation this December. Staycation is a holiday that someone spends in their own country
or at home, rather than travelling somewhere else. It is like a vacation designed to enjoy time away from a
job or normal everyday activities. It might be just as good (if not better) than traditional vacations you’ve
taken in the past.
You’ll be starting your vacation right away. At the end of a long work week, you won’t have to rush
to pack your bags, head to the airport to catch a late-night flight, or start the long drive to get to your
travel destination. Instead, you can unwind and come home from work and relax. You can order take-out
and enjoy some family time in your living room, watch your favourite show or make it a movie night,
play some board games, or read a book.
Staycations also give you extra time. Do you always wish your vacation could be just a few days
longer? When you aren’t spending a day or more with air travel time or driving at each end of a regular
vacation, it’s like receiving a few bonus days off! No wasted time sitting in the airport or standing at
the rental car desk. No worrying about checking out of your vacation rental property or hotel and sitting
around all day waiting for a flight to come home. Besides, you won’t have to worry about the jet lag you
might struggle with when flying across time zones on vacation.
In planning for staycations, you may do some research by surfing the internet. Still, you won’t spend
hours on the computer obsessively searching for the best deals. There’ll be no late nights doing laundry,
so you have clean clothes for the week ahead either. You also don’t have to remember to stop the mail,
fill your prescriptions ahead of time, pack your hiking boots, or reschedule appointments you might have
made during your vacation week.
Sometimes, weather can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. With a staycation, you won’t
have cancelled flights. Or spend days amusing the kids in the hotel room when all you packed was
sunscreen and sand toys for the beach. Instead, you can create a list of things you can do near home for
different kinds of weather. Picnics at the lake or local park, catching an afternoon movie, knocking down
pins at the bowling alley, visiting local attractions, or going on a wine tour can all be scheduled around
forecasted temperatures and precipitation.
Staycations support local and regional businesses. It’s okay to spend money on international travel
or in big domestic tourist areas. But state tourism and fun day trips around your local area provide an
excellent opportunity to help your local economy. Getting out and picking strawberries at a local farm,
stopping in the new cafe recently opened, or spending a day at a local children’s museum are great ways
to invest in your local community, and have a great time with your family.
Travel can be a ton of fun, but it can also be stressful and exhausting, depending on the vacation
destination and activities you choose. Creating a great staycation is one option to consider for enjoying
time off.

Questions 27 to 32
You are going to read about an incident that sets the path to the writer’s future. Six sentences have been removed
from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32). There are two extra
sentences which you do not need to use.
Being a fresh graduate from the high school, I had three options of doing degree studies. I wasn’t
interested in engineering so that left business or medicine. I couldn’t decide, so my uncle suggested that I
do a work placement to gain experience for a month in a multinational company followed by a month in
a hospital. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s observatory placement at a bank in Kuala Lumpur. 27 I
liked the professionalism, made new friends and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going surroundings.
The month passed and soon I began my stint at a leading hospital. The experience couldn’t have
been more different. The hospital had an intense environment with the buzz in the wards contrasting with
the eerie silence of the intensive care unit. The doctors were in a constant rush. The days started early
at 7 a.m. and were filled with attending rounds, watching blood samples being taken and rushing around
with team to the ward, intensive care and clinics. It seemed that everyone was always busy that there was
always work to be done. 28 The family’s grief was difficult to handle. And the night duties!
Also known as night calls, they were essentially a 26-hour shift. This was insane, working all day, through
the night and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxed atmosphere, better
working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability but the studying
and training was tough. 29
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after a particularly hectic night call. I
came to a junction and saw a group of people in front of me. 30 I stopped my car immediately
and examined the boy. The boy was hit by a motorcyclist who ran away. His face was covered with blood.
I knew he had to get to the hospital quickly for if he was bleeding into his brains, he could die in a matter
of minutes. With the help of some bystanders, I lifted his unconscious body into the car and raced back to
the hospital.
On reaching the emergency entrance, I shouted, “Head injury!” Paramedical staff whisked him into
the emergency room while I gave a quick history to the doctor on call. After a preliminary examination,
the doctors determined that he was most likely bleeding into his brain. 31 I drove home
exhausted and troubled, the blood on the back seat served as a reminder of the harrowing experience.
The next day, I went to the operating room to find out what had happened. A surgical aide said that
a blood vessel had ruptured in the boy’s skull. The clot had been removed, the bleeding stopped and the
boy was recovering in the ward. I went to see him and was introduced to his family as the ‘doctor who
saved my life’. 32 I enrolled for medical studies.

A It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
B His family was contacted and he was wheeled into emergency surgery.
C I tagged along with the sales and marketing people and got a feel for how the world of finance
functioned.
D No words were spoken but what a feeling I had and my future path lay in front of me.
E I saw a boy laying on the ground and he groaned in pain.
F While I saw a good number of patients getting well and being discharged, I also witnessed a 16-year-
old die.
G Yet, I was still undecided on choosing whether business or medicine option.
H I drove past them and saw a boy lay motionless in the middle of the road.
