Reading Part 4 - Gapped Text Paper 1 (Q27 – Q32)

Practice 1

Questions 1 to 6
You are going to read an article about the best way to learn a language and the reasons for doing so. Six
sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap
(1 to 6). There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.

Language Learning
Young children the world over effortlessly pick up whatever language or languages they are
exposed to. Researchers say that when you are young, you acquire language, rather than having

to learn it. 1 G It then becomes work, and few people who start late with a second language
ever succeeds in becoming fluent with good accents.
Infants can naturally be great absorbers of all types of knowledge, especially speech, the
medium of communication so vital in their early years. Whereas, adults very often find the

process slow, painful and difficult. 2 C Infants begin acquiring language purely by listening
to people speaking. Therefore, the best advice for prospective students of any language is to
expose their sense of hearing as much as possible to it. They should listen to radio broadcasts in
that language, see films, learn the songs and as far as possible associate with people who speak

that language.
Anyone with a high level of instrumental motivation, will go to great lengths to study a new
language if it means securing a well-paid job or making more money through business. 3 F .
However, there is a more altruistic motive for the study of languages. Many conflicts of this world

are believed to be the result of misunderstandings especially between people of different cultural
backgrounds. 4 E Since different cultures have very different worldviews, cross-cultural
communication is especially likely to change meaning between the speaker and listener.
One has to remember that each language has grown out of the deep cultural aspirations of

the community that uses the language. 5 H Out of such understanding will come a greater
measure of mutual respect which will eventually bring about a lasting peace.
There are many “friendship societies” which enable people who wish to appreciate another
culture to do so in a most congenial manner. Foreign missions of most countries hold classes to

teach their language to people of the host countries. 6 B

A There are many effective ways to learn a language especially through reading good books.
B International schools are also great nurseries of international friendship.
C It seems the simplest and best way to learn a language is by natural absorption, mostly by
listening, and with a relaxed mind and manner.
D The objective is to expose the people in the host country to the large amount of literature
available in their language.
E Our minds try to twist incoming information to make it fit in our worldview.
F There is nothing intrinsically wrong with either objective.
G If you wait until you are older to start learning, language then becomes something you must
learn by rote and memorization.
H As such, by understanding their language, we begin to comprehend how they think, and
more significantly, how they feel.

W riting Part 1 - Short Communicative Message Paper 2 (Part 1)

Practice 1

You received an email from your friend, Zayyad who asked you about your experience in witnessing
a fire happened recently.

Hello,
I heard there was a fire happened near your house last week. Were you affected by it? Is there any
loss of life? What happened actually?
I’m curious to know about it.

Bye!

Now write an email to your friend in about 80 words. Write your answer below.

Subject :

Hi Zayyad,
There was indeed a fire happened near my house last week, fortunately it only affected one of

my neighbour’s house, not me. Thanks for your concern.
There was nobody in the house when the fire was broke out as my neighbour, Ah Kok had
gone to work. I was cycling home after the sports practice at school, when I saw the fire, I quickly

cycled towards the scene. The other neighbours were trying to extinguish the fire with pails of
water taken from their houses.
Not long after that, the firemen had arrived and sprayed the water on the fire immediately.

Though the properties were lost in the fire, luckily, no one was hurt. When Ah Kok came to the
scene, the fire had already been subsided. It seemed that he forgot to stop charging his tab when he
went out. He regretted for what had happened.

This incident warns us on the dangers of fire. We should be careful when we use the electricity.
I am also glad to be part of a neighbourhood that is willing to help one another during emergency.

Alright, that’s all. Bye!
