would get together and choose a king. The king would then reign over the animal kingdom for
the next twelve months.

demonstrations of their strength or their wisdom. Then, all the animals of the forest would vote.
The animal with the most votes was crowned king.
The monkey knew that he was neither very strong nor very wise. He was also not good at

One day, Apai Seumang-umang invited Apai Saloi to go to the jungle with him. Apai Seumang-
umang wanted Apai Saloi to help him look for treasure.
The next morning, the two men left their longhouse. They made their way to the Rajang River.
The journey upriver was long and dangerous. Finally they reached the place Apai Seumang-umang
was looking for. Apai Saloi followed him wherever he went. For two weeks, they walked through
thick jungle until they arrived at a cave. They entered the cave.
Apai Seumang-umang was surprised to see a shimmering light in the cave. Piled up in heaps
lay the treasure which Seumang-umang had been dreaming of. He was overjoyed. Unfortunately,
they had no baskets to carry the gold in.
Apai Seumang-umang asked Apai Saloi to wait there while he went and searched for a rattan
to make a basket. Left alone in the cave, Apai Saloi fell asleep. Suddenly, he was woken up by a 2

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. 2017
Once upon a time, there lived a fisherman. One day he tossed his net into the sea as he
always did.
To the fisherman’s surprise, he caught a tarnished copper vase. The vase was very heavy
and was sealed with lead. The fisherman used his fishing knife to cut away the seal. He stuck a
finger inside and felt nothing. He turned it upside down, and nothing fell out. He felt disappointed
and was about to throw the vase away when suddenly a thick cloud of smoke rolled out of
the vase and swirled into the air.
The fisherman stared in wonder as the smoke began taking the shape of a huge genie.
The genie looked at him angrily. It said that it wanted to kill him. The fisherman asked the
genie why it would want to kill the man who had set it free.
The genie replied that three hundred years ago, it had rebelled against the king of the
genie. To punish it, the king enclosed it in this vase and sealed it with lead and flung the vase

After being in the vase for three hundred years, its anger grew so great that it vowed that
whoever set it free would be punished with death. The fisherman begged for his life but the
genie still insisted on killing him. Finally the fisherman had an idea. He said that he could not
believe that the genie could fit in the vase. The genie became very angry and said he would
show him. It then transformed again into smoke and entered the vase.
The fisherman then quickly closed the vase with the lid. He then threw the vase back into
the sea.
