where he earned his BA in Secondary Education. Mr. Faiman’s teaching career started
at South in 1968 and ended there 31 years later. He taught English, Media Literature
and Composition and was also the yearbook advisor. He created the Contemporary Rock
Lyrics as Poetry unit and started the unit where class members wrote, filmed, and created
a film for presentation and grade. Although Mr. Faiman says he hasn’t, “done anything
in his retirement,” we beg to differ. In 2021, he created the “Omaha South High Friends
Online” Facebook group. He is the administrator of the group, which has over 5,000 members to date.
Through this forum, alumni, friends and family keep up-to-date with past classmates and events. He
poses questions and provides information to provoke thoughtful conversations amongst his members.
His time at South lives on in the lessons he taught the thousands of Packers who were lucky enough to
be assigned to one of his classes.

this time of year – it is the “season of
giving” which runs from fall through
December. We hope that we can count
on your support.
When? Gifts must be made by

AFTER 80 YEARS, 1931 CLASS RING REUNITED
Here is a small world story of a SHS 1931 class ring that was lost in the
early 1960s being reunited with the family of its original owner 80 years
later! The following account is told from the perspective of Sheila Brazda,
the granddaughter of the ring’s owner.
“One day in March 2022, I saw the following post on Facebook: ‘I’m still
looking for the family of the class ring owner. I’m looking for relatives of
Loretta Mae Hubbard Smith [SHS-1931] or Elmer Arthur Smith. They are
both deceased but had 8 children so I’m hoping someone will recognize
a name and contact me.’
What!?!? Loretta and Elmer are my grandparents! On top of that, this was posted by
my husband’s cousin, Carol Citta! Carol’s father, my husband’s Uncle Fred, found a
ring around 1961 while working at the Golden Spike Drive-in Theater. He searched over
the years but was never able to find the owner. After he passed Carol was determined
to locate the owner. Her research found that it is a SHS 1931 class ring, the year my
Grandma Smith graduated! The ring has the initials LMH inside and Grandma was the
only classmate with those initials!
My husband, Bob, and I have been married 30 years. What are the
odds that a ring found by a man whose future nephew would one
day marry the owner’s granddaughter! Neither of us were born at
the time Uncle Fred found the ring. Amazing!
My father, Donald Smith-1961, is now in a care facility, and I
was so excited to show him the ring. [He is pictured with the
ring on his pinky.] He was amazed when I told him the story!
Dad and four siblings are alive and doing well living in the
Omaha area. All 8 siblings also graduated from SHS.”
Our thanks to Carol for her determination and Sheila [pictured
to the right] for sharing the happy ending with pictures!
