will receive our Honorary Contributor’s
Award this year. Margie was a woman
athlete before such sports were sponsored
in our schools; she successfully played
both basketball and baseball in a multi-state
region. Her softball team was named the
Ambassadors and the basketball team was
sponsored by H. P. Smith Motors. Later in
life after much business success, she became
an avid golfer. Throughout her life in Cali-
fornia, she never forgot her South Omaha
roots. When she died, she left a substantial
bequest to the South High Alumni Associa-
tion so we could help meet the needs of SHS
students and teachers. She is our heroine and
we thank her and her husband Dale Speck for

their kindness and generosity.

Note - we are limited to 400 tickets for
this popular banquet. Cost is $40 in

lifting their voices in joyous celebration.

The show opened with “Celebrate with
Music!” a song specifically crafted for the
50-Year Reunion. The Ambassadors, mem-
bers of a tradition representing decades of
quality vocal performances from the 1960s
through the present, combined their talents.
Soloists delivered performances for those
in attendance with songs ranging from “The
Impossible Dream” to “I Will Always Love
You.” Families performed together singing
“Anything You Can Do” as well as “Won-
derwall.” Many other performances were
enjoyed that night, combining the sound of
voice with piano, drum, guitar and strings
to create melodies to delight the audience.
The show ended with the full Ambassador
complement returning to the stage and
performing “Joy to the World.”

DONATIONS OF TREASURED
MEMORABILIA AND YEAR BOOKS

Roger and Judy Anderson sorted through memorabilia and
yearbooks left following the death of Roger’s parents, Ralph
V. Anderson-1928 and Ruth E. (Nodean) Anderson-1927.
Thankfully they spoke about this material with their neighbor,
Beverly (Maliszewski) Sladovnik-1959, who directed them
to the office. During a recent visit to the Alumni office they
delivered a treasure trove of material for the Alumni archives,
including four yearbooks, graduation material and photos.
We are so glad they sought a home for this memorabilia
rather than pitching it. These pieces of history are available
for you to review in the office. Thank you Roger and Judy
for your donation!

We appreciate all SHS memorabilia for archives. Please
keep us in mind! Thanks.

THANKS TO OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS,

YOU ENJOY YOUR TOOTER TWICE A YEAR!

We salute and send a BIG THANK YOU to the fellow alumni who

2012 GOLF OUTING A HOT-HOT-HOT EVENT
By Carole Safley, Event Chair

Another successful Packer Greats Golf Outing was held Congratulations to the winning team above led by Mike
on Sunday, 7-22-12 at Tregaron Golf Course. The day Venditte which included Don, Steve and Mike Venditte, Jr.
started with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, but with temperatures
reaching 100+ that day, everyone was extremely thankful for
that early start time. BIG thanks to all the golfers, our hole
sponsors, and raffle prize donors. Thanks to the tournament
volunteers: Carole Safley, Mary Urkevich, Judy Storm,
Gail Granger, Evelyn and Dean Winther, Deb and Mike
Contreras, Sandie and Scott Knudsen for creating a very
successful outing. There were 31 teams participating this
year helping the Alumni raise several thousand dollars that
will go towards scholarships awarded to deserving SHS
students. An added plus this year was SHS’s Golf Coach,
Kevin Kennedy, participating in the outing. He brought
one current student/golfer, Jaylen Fairchild and an up-
and-coming female golfer, Maya Northcutt. Both students
golfed and then helped with the raffle prize drawings.
Coach Kennedy also had several autographed items from
the PGA and professional golfers that were included in the
raffle drawings.

Page 2 South High School ALUMNI TOOTER Page 21

Next year’s golf outing is tentatively set for Sunday, 7-21-13. Keep the date open. Carole and her crew
will start working on next year’s event. Hope to see you then.
