The Student Council is composed of two representa tives from each of the
organized freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes and the senior class
president. Two boys and two girls are nomina ted each semester by the clubs,
and two siudenls are chosen each semester from a list of four submitte d by
Commission.
The major activity of the council is to make all the laws governing student
conduct.

To encourage development of character, to promote leadership, to create
e n thusiasm for high scholarship, and to s tim ulate a desire to render service
among students are the purposes of the National Honor Society.
To qualify for membership in this national organiza tion, the student must
rank in the highest third of his class, have displayed eHective leadership in
school activities, have spent at least one year in South High, and have rendered
service to the school. Not more than 15 percent of any class can be elected
into this society.
The South High chapter of th e National Honor Society, which is in its 24th
year, sponsors two banquets a year, one for honor roll students, and one for
oHicers of school organizations.
The sponsors of the chapter are Miss Jean Landale and Miss Ellen Fore-
head.

The Youth Civic Council, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce,
is composed of boys from eleven Omaha high schools. The boys come from
South, Be n son, North, Central, Tec hnical, Cathedral, C reighton Prep, Sacred
Heart, Underwood, Holy Name, ond S t. Joseph.
The purpose of the Youth Civic Council is to promote a better unde rs tand-
ing of the city.
This organization meets once a month at the Elks Club for lunch and a
business meeting.
Projects completed or anticipated are the C hris tmas toy collectio n for
needy children, Youth Radio Forum, Youth Council presentations on our Ame ri-
can System of Free Enterprise, Father's Doy Ties for children of needy families,
ond the Youth Parade.
Corl Vondra is chairman of the Youth Radio Forum. Some of the proble ms

second a n nual South H igh Homecoming coronation he ld on N ovember 2
in the gymnasium.
Joann and Jerry, who were selected by vote of th e entire s tudent body,
reigned over the festivities at the coronation and dance, sponsored by the
South High Student Council.
The gaily decorated room was fi lled to capacity as the royal court
announcer, Tom Wees, proclaimed the beginning of th e coronation .
Attendants Sheila Little and Dolores Quintero took their positions near
the entrance portals th at led down the royal carpet to the king's and queen's
thrones.
Retiring queen and king, Arlene Acamo and Tom Kripal, began the long
procession to the thrones where they crowned the new monarchs.

The South High Debate Squad, which is coac he d by Mr. R. L. Brown,
participates in the Ne bras ka W esle yan, Omaha University, Omaha Central,
Technical, Lincoln Central, and Grand Island tournaments. The Girls' Boys',
and Ope n Missouri Valley Tournaments are the three outstanding contests
of the y ear. Studenb from the five public high schools in Omaha, Lincoln
Central, and Abraham Lincoln are included in the League.
The object of debate is lo make the participants clear thinkers and good
speakers. Before being admitted to the squad, s tude nts must first take Beginning
Debate for al least one semester.

This local organization was first formed in the spring oi 1930 with Mary
McGuire acting as president.
The club works to promote activities, interests, leadership , and ccmrade-
ship among the girls. The 22 members try to develop an a le rtness to opporlu··
nities for home, school, <;:md world c itizenship a fforded the modern g irl. The y
also strive for a worthy use of time, knowle dge , a nd a wise choice of voca tions.
Annually, the cabinet gives recognition lo the Outstanding Junio r and
Senior girl, elected by a popular vote of their c lassmates. The senior g irl
receives a medal while the junior winner h as her name inscribed on a trophy.

The Speech Choir was organized in 1937 for the purpose of giving cultural
speech experiences to large numbers of s tudents. The group co-ordinates
speech and dramatics w ith the A Cappello Choir in the presentation of inspi-
ra tional and timely choric art numbers for public performance.
To become a member of the c ho ir a student must ha ve a one or two
average in at least two semesters of Speech W ork.
This year the group had the honor of presenting their programs for the
N .S.E.A. and the International Council of Exceptional Stude nts .

FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA
The South High Chili of Future Teachers of America was organized to
inspire and encourage young people to enter the field of teaching. The club
was organized in the spring of 195 1, and became an active part of our school
in the fall of the same year. It is one of 20 F.T.A. C lubs o rganized in Nebraska.
FTA seeks to train young people, through practice, for profe ssional and
civic leadership .Its members are encouraged to cultivate in themselves the
qualities o f personality and character which are the foundation of successful
teaching. FTA also provides its members with special information in the various
fields of education.

The Library Service League has a membership of 100 students, each of
whom gives voluntary service in the library. They assist at the two desks;
take attendance; shelve books; do office work; and check books, magazines,
and pamphlets a t the doors. Membership is open to all stude nts whose citizen-
ship is satis factory.
The Library Service League, composed of five elected officers and six
appointe d ones, meets every second and fourth Monday, Period VII. The party
committee, which consists of four m embers, plans a semester party for the
entire league and also a party for the cabinet.
The highest honor in the Library Service League, tha t of head door monitor,
is held by Silvera Argintean.
