dull days of useless comings and goings,
false smiles,
slow wasted hours:
these blaspheme the soft spring breeze
that just now begins to blow
so much time to spare
that daydreams don't dare
to be enough for me
i need more:

things like no walls and narrow hal"ls

or clocks and bells
to tell me when to go

but things that kt me live as sunrays do:

dancing through the air
bound by no wall of warning words,
not bound by anything at all
except the darkness of the night
after the sun has gone . . .

He won' t be aro und anymore
To mess up my hair and yell at me for
no t wearing shoes.
To make me feel like the most beautiful
girl on Earth , even though I know I'm
not. My finger feels so bare without his
gigantic ring resting there, shouting to
the world "She's taken , so hands off!"
I' m scared now
To go o ut into that crazy world , alo ne.
I used to feel safe with him
holding tigh tly to my hand
Sort of like my mom used to when I was
small.
The phone rang.
Excitedly I ran to answer.
It was the wrong number.

Butterfly collectors
make friends of dead beauty.
Victories make trophy cases crowded.
The last touchdown came just in time.
But how do I say
all my prize ribbons hang on you?

Four walls, four corners, ceiling and . .
floor,
Rising in the morning, falling at night, ;f4 • ' ••
Playing life as a solo game,
Coloring scenes in grey and black.
Eating identical food day after day,
Same routine, never altering,
Meeting schedules, never faltering.
Will you ever notice me?
I'm just human,
whatever that means,
My moods change suddenly and without
warning.
I envy many, and idolize a few ,
My ideas are great,
even though unexpressed.
I have a few good qualities;
many faults.
But you know, if you add one to zero
you'll get,
something,
One real friend is all I need ...

"Intimacy and mutual attachment;
a friendly relationship, especially
one of long standing."

So cold!
So ugly!
Yet,
It describes friendship to so many.
(It comes from the dictionary.)
"The thought behind the smile;
The warmth felt by the helping hand;
The happiness sprouting from peace;
The love shown by the gentle kiss."
So warm!
So beautiful!
Yet
It describes friendship to so few.
(It comes from the heart.)

I seek you out in hallways
and scotch-tape you to the lockers in my mind.
How can I convince you that I'm a trophy
no one wants? Or needs? I'm ugly.
But even after all the conversations I've had
alone, with myself, in my room,
or killing you with the keys in type class
and trying to lose you at a movie,
yet you return.
There ought to be a law against you!
"Oops," she said, bumping into him accidentally.
He looked at her, arresting her with his eyes.
She ran off, cradling her books, and was gone.

Here I am America! .. ,. \
a new child
with old ideas ... .
with peace signs and clo thes that express ME!
Washed, unwashed, molded, boxed, )
in colored assortments
spread before you for your inspectio n,
your consideration ,
your love.
I am the unlit fu se linked to the world
much alike the umbilical cord
that joined us in wonder at the b eginning.
