Teacher PROJECTS
Every year SHS teachers and staff
are invited to submit their ideas for
funding for innovative projects or special
requests. The SHSAA Board of Directors
reviews all applications with the goal of
funding as many impactful projects that
touch as many students and teachers
as possible. Many of these great ideas
fall outside South’s budget parameters
and will not happen without outside help.
SHSAA is happy that, with our generous
supporters, we are able to turn these
ideas into realities.
Here are the approved 2020 teacher
special project requests:
• Provided funding for the Character
in Action Pine Ridge Reservation
service trip that had to be
postponed.
• Provided funding for a cross-country
team trip that had to be postponed.
• Provided funding to help with gift
bags for all the teachers during
Teacher Appreciation Week
• Purchased 25 bluetooth keyboards
to help students work remotely
easier.
• Supported Taurus yearbook by
purchasing an advertisement.
• Provided dinners for teachers and
staff during fall parent-teacher
conferences
BACK TO SCHOOL!
The pandemic altered our back to school
plans for the teachers and staff. In lieu
of a big pancake breakfast, we dropped
off donuts and a bottle of hand sanitizer
for every teacher.

ALUMNI ELVES
Every year a dedicated group of Packer alumni elves put together
holiday gifts for hundreds of assisted living residents in South
Omaha. This year 300 gift bags full of fun treats (including candy
and word searches) and everyday items (hand sanitizer and tissues)
were assembled. They were taken to St. Joseph Tower Assisted
Living, Hillcrest Mable Rose, and Hillcrest Health Service. Thank
you to all who donated items, helped assemble the bags and
delivered to each building.

REMEMBERING JOANNE (PLACEK) SOKALSKY
Joanne (Placek) Sokalsky passed away on January 22, 2021 at the age 1959
of 84. Over a remarkable 44 years at South High Magnet (from the late 1980
1950s through the early 2000s), she taught Spanish, typing, shorthand, 1988
office training and English to hundreds of Packers.
Twice a year she arranged luncheons for all retired SHS teachers. She
sponsored Future Teachers of America, served as senior class sponsor, was
on the Honors and Awards Scholarship committee and the Commencement
Speaker Selection committee. She was co-founder of the National Spanish
Honor Society, the first chapter in an Omaha public school. She managed
Omaha Ole, a citywide Spanish convention. She was a member of the
Omaha Education Association, Nebraska State Education Association, and
National Education Association.
Joanne’s awards and recognitions include the coveted Alice Buffet Outstanding Teacher Award;
Excellence in Education from the American G.I. Forum; and Star Award (Outstanding Foreign
Language Teacher). She was listed in “Who’s Who in American Education” three times and was
inducted into the SHS
Hall of Fame and named
a Distinguished Teacher
in 2014. Joanne credited
several educators at SHS
for her success, including
Dr. Richard Krebs, former
principal; and Alice Giitter and Roland Hinrichs.
Despite all of Joanne’s professional achievements, in her words “the biggest awards are to see
former students make good in their lives, whichever direction this may take.” If you were one of
Joanne’s students, you know that she took great joy in your scholarship and friendship. She held
you in her thoughts throughout her life.
