The South High Packers varsity
basketball team started the
season off great by winning eight
of their first nine games. They
placed second in the Metro Holi·
day tournament by defeating
Prep, Burke, Northwest, and
North High Schools. Through the
season they played well organized
basketball. The games which they
lost were all by close margins.
The team finished the season with
13 wins and 9 losses. T hey went
to state but were defeated by top
rated Westside by four points.

This year c heerleaders sold football and basket·
ball pins, South High School t·shirts, and red and
while balloons at football games in order to raise
funds. The funds were used for a c heerleading ban·
quet, with remaining money being u sed for fund
raising projects the following year.
Cheerleaders also attended camp at Avila Col·
lege in K an sas City, Missouri. Each squ ad won
several ribbons and brought back the Spirit Stick
for South.

This year the Ambassadors had thirty perfor·
mances around the Omaha area. They sangrat Ban·
croft Junior High and Marrs Elementary and Junior
High. They also performed for three Nebraska State
·meetings. The meetings included the Lutheran Men
of Nebraska, the State Parliamentarians, and Kap·
pa Iota Education Sorority. In September, the Am·
bassadors will celebrate their twentieth anniversary
of performing.

Home Economics Club was formed by Mrs. Nicol and
Mrs. Crane in order to acquaint students with homemaking
activities, and provide an opportunity to develop c raft skills
for profit.
To raise funds, a Favo rite Recipe Cookbook wa s sold at
the beginning of the year. On December 9th, a Country
Store was opened to sell student-made crafts and nutritional
snack foods. The club received ten percent of funds raised,
with the remaining ninety percent being divided among the
m embers.

and the O m aha Optimist's Club provided fu nds for
the breakfast. A teachers recognition breakfast was

The South High JROTC is involved in
many activities throughout the school
yea r, inc luding: courtesy patrol a nd col·
or guard at football and basketball
games, parades, honor guards for
Veterans and Memorial Days, and rifle
team matches to mention only a few.
T en c adet s from South joined 150
cadets from seven other Omaha high
schools and t raveled to Fort Riley, Kan·
sas for a three day orientation. While
there, they participated in running the
obstacle course. Also, in nearby
Abilene, Kansas, they visited the
muse um, the library, and th e
Eisenhower Center.
The highlight of the JROTC social
season is a military ball held each Spr-
ing for graduating JROTC seniors.

This past year, the Science Club went on a field trip
to the mountains of Colorado and the plains o f Wyom-
ing. The students left on June 15 and returned on
June 2 1, for a 7 day/6 night stay at the following
c ities: Laramie, Wyoming; A spen, Vail, and Steamboat
Spri ngs, Colo rado. In o rder for students to raise
money to pay for the trip, many worked at concessio n
stands at various sporting events, a raffle was held,
and a variety of goods were sold.

Mr. Pistone always lends a helping hand when problems arise.
Five auto body students participated in rebuilding this
1930 Model A Coupe. It was refinished in black and tan
acrylic enamel paint and was then entered in the In·
dustrial Arts Fair at the Westroads. It was also driven in
the 1982-83 Homecoming parade, in which Mr. Christie
and Miss Fellows were passengers.

were all new members except three this
year.
Throughout the year student council
members held dances and car washes.
They also participated in the Special
Olympics. They helped out with South's
Blood Mobile and The Eagles Blood
Mobile. Student Counci l also helped with a
food drive at Thankgiving and a Toy drive
at Christmas. They sponsored homecom·
ing and this years theme was " Precious
Moments."
Student Council attended the state con·
vention at Columbus, Nebraska. They con·
versed with other members of other coun·
cils and talked about issues throughout the
State.
