Ambassadors And Choirs Sing

In September 1963, 24
singers became the first
South High School Am-
bassadors. That same
year, some of the pre-
sent Ambassadors were
born. Since that time, a
total of 400 students (90
were members for two
years), have been mem-
bers of The Ambassa-
dors. And since that
time, the name has con-
tinued to describe the
purpose and activities of
the ensemble. The Am-
bassadors (quoting from
the 1964 SOUTHITE)
"travel all over Omaha
and into the surround-
ing communities
spreading good will and
the fine name of not
only South High's Music
Department but also of
the student body."

The sound of guns, the rhythm of marching feet, the
wearing of uniforms, the colors waving proudly in the

breeze-this is what most people associate with the Ju-
nior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. But behind the

scene, the unit has many activities that go on through-
out the year.

The Courtesy Patrol and Color Guard are the fi rst to

be involved at football games. The Color Guard is re-

sponsible for presenting the colors to the h ome team.
The Courtesy Patrol is involved in handing out pro-

grams and acting as guides.
The Drill team has three main meets during the year .

They are the OPS Drill meet, the UNO Drill meet, and
the Fourth Region meet. The exhibition drill team can

go with or without rifles. This team can do any routine
that the commander wants. Unlike the exhibition

team, the 22-5 Drill team must follow the drill manual
called FM 22-5. This manual has all the movements the

team can do. It is also limited to the routines that it can
have.

This year, South has a new group called the Honor
Guard. The Honor Guard participates in veteran funer-
als by firing a 21 gun salute, honoring the deceased.

The Annual Formal Inspection was held in De-

cember. The inspection was conducted by a group of
active army officers from Fort Lewis, Washington.

The purpose of the inspection is to rate the unit in all
areas of operation, drill and ceremony. The result of
the inspection was the best score in the last ten years.
This will make South and Honor Unit for the fourth
consecutive year.

34/ROTC

Camps are held throughout the
year for the cadets who wish to
attend. These cadets come from
all the Omaha Public High
Schools. The cadets learn many
valuable experiences at these
camps. Events in which they par-
ticipate in are: repealing from a
thirty-foot wall, hand-grenade
marksmanship, slide-for-life, and

physical training. The camp is
open to all cadets, including fe-

males.
In May, a recognition night is

held to present medals and other
awards to the deserving cadets.
