STUDENT

_DRIVER_

"What do I want to do in Iife? What is my purpose? II
My assumption is that I have a reason for living,
that my life has a direction. But maybe we aren't
moving in one direction any more than history class
is. The assumption that I am headed toward some-
thing, makes me want to justify my actions and
plan out the future. I think the reason that I don't
want drivers ed., to wait in the lunch Iine, run er-
rands for my teachers, etc., is that in the back of my
mind I believe I have a destiny and that this task
is a waste of my time because it dosn't contribute
to my II important work. 11

Today - just today - I want to be what
is me. I don't want to do the "expected"
if I don't expect it of myself. I don't
want to be "nice". I want to be honest
with myself, not influence myself. May-
be if I close myself within myself no one
can get in and, all alone, I can I ive to-
day for me.

1 change my mind about
what I want to do in my
life everyday. There is a
part of me that wants to
write, a part that wants to
paint, a part that wants to
teach, a part that wants to
marry a rich person so I
don't have to worry about
planning my future, To
force myself into a single

one thing in Iife, wou.ld

destroy large parts of me.

1 see that I Iive now, and

only now. 1 have decided
to do what I want to do to-
day and not what I decided
was best for me yesterday.

179

As I look back on my life, one of the most con-
stant and powerful things I have experienced
within myself is the desire to be more than I am
at the moment-an unwillingness to let myself
remain where I am-a desire to increase the
boundaries of myself-a desire to do more, learn
more, express more-a desire to grow, improve,
accomplish, expand, I used to interpret this in-
ner push as meaning that there was some one
thing out there I wanted to do or be or have,
And I have spent too much of my life trying to
find it. But now I know I am seeking more than
the mate or the profession or the religion, more
even than pleasure or power or meaning,

I heard that the new and exciting

I saw, I was the only one develop-
ing my scientific skills. The young-
er students were all developing
other skills plus a few I never knew
existed. Among those new learners
were Vaiva Sarka and Predrag
Kopun and Lori Myers and Gary
Vetick.
