ARE YOU GETTING OUR EMAILS?
The SHS Alumni Association’s newest endeavor is our incorporation of
email blasts, appropriately named, Alumni eNews. If we have your email
address in our database, then you
have already been the recipient of the
Spring TOOTER via email. We will also
be using emails to send out reminders
of upcoming events, as well as to keep you up-to-date on what’s happening
with the association, the school, the students/teachers and the South
Omaha community. These emails will fill the void of information between
the bi-yearly paper edition of the Alumni TOOTER. If you would rather receive
your TOOTER electronically instead of by US Post, contact the SHS Alumni
Office with your email address or update your contact info online at

Several of the SHSAA members and staff have been busy

REMEMBERING CAROL VAN METRE (1938-2016) by Cara Riggs
Carol Van Metre was a true friend to South Omaha and to the kids of South High. I’m not just
saying that. She loved us, and she would do anything in her power to provide access to our
kids. It wasn’t for sympathy or mis-guided charity. No, it was because she fell in love with the
community. What I really loved about this woman, however, was that she would much rather
hang out at the GI Forum for $1 tacos and beer on a Thursday night or eat South High popcorn
at a South High soccer game, than be sitting at a fancy fundraiser in a stuffy ballroom, anytime.
That’s just how she was. She was my friend. She was our friend.
