OutstandingAlumnus 200 I

1965 graduate, Richard W. Lee, was installed as Assistant Director of the Richmond District Internal Revenue Service

in 1994. Prior to that, he served as the chief of the Examination Division for the IRS in Wichita, Kansas and a lengthy interview
was published in the "Heart of the City" May-June 1992 issue.

He became an IRS revenue agent after receiving his Business Administration degree in Omaha, transferring to Texarkana and
then Dallas, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Baltimore, MD, Wichita, Kansas, and in 2000 was moved to the Board of Inland Reve-
nue - Port of Spain in Trinidad, W.I. as an Ambassador to that country. He earned his master's degree in Public Administration
from Syracuse University and became a Certified Public Accountant.

While in Wichita, Lee felt that the accounting field had a significant under representation of African Americans so he recruited

heavily at historically black colleges like Langston University in Oklahoma, and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. He

was also very active in the community and used those contacts to identify potential employees. .According to Lee, the IRS had

more Mrican American accountants than any other organization in the state of Kansas, and his office also exported talent to lar-

ger districts through promotions and transfers at the employee's request. ..

While Lee was the Assistant Director in Wichita, the IRS Examination Division in Kansas had over 300 employees who were
responsible for 8,000 tax returns every year. During Lee's tenure, the IRS hired 18 African American agents and auditors, and
five Mrican American student trainees in positions designed as training to become revenue agents. He encouraged employees to
seek CPA certificates and did everything he could to aid them in the process. He also was instrumental in hiring young African
Americans who obtained significant business world experience and education, even if they would not be future accountants.

Lee's community involvement included teaching an adult Sunday School class at his church, St. Paul AME, refereeing at the
YMCA youth · and adult basketball programs, belonging to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, mentoring through the Wichita/ .
Sedgwick County Cities in Schools project, and serving as a mentor to a fifth grader, Michael Carr, from Dodge Elementary
School.

This versatile role model also performed with the Wichita Children's Theater, surprising himself at the "greasepaint" in his
veins.

Richard Lee said his family is his lifeline and source of his strength. His wife, Althea, and children Rhonda, Eric, and
Marcus, are not only supportive, but are actively involved in every part of his personal life. They are enjoying Lee's ap-
pointment as Ambassador to Trinidad, and hopefully will have more stories in the future to share with TOOTER read-
ers!

Excerpts from the "Heart of the City" Newsletter - May/June 1992. The Alumni Association congratulates Richard Lee for his
outstanding achievements and looks forward to hearing about his Ambassadorship to Trinidad!

THE SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WINS

LOTTERY

Fellow Alumni,

Consider how very fortunate we are to have an Alumni Association. It raises money to help the students of South
High School prepare for college through high school grants, and helps pay for college through scholarships. It also
provides the Roy A. Smith Sports Complex to improve their physical education program. Your Alumni Association
sponsors various events (bowling, golf, spaghetti dinner, a football game, dances, etc.) for alumni and also mails ap-
proximately 19,000 TOOTERS twice a year to share news with you about your school, classmates and friends. These
activities all cost money, and that is why we are asking for your support with this WinlWin Lottery. Without this
money for operating expenses, we are unable to continue our current level of support to SHS, its students, and
its alumni.

The persons buying the winning lottery tickets will win cash, and the persons selling the wi.nning tickets will win the

same amount of cash. ..

FIRST PRIZE -$2,500- paid to the buyer and $2,500 paid to the seller!
SECOND PRIZE-$1,000- paid to the buyer and $1,000 paid to the seller!

THIRD PRIZE -$500- paid to the buyer and $500 paid to the seller!

If you buy the lottery tickets personally and you win, you are entitled to both the Buyer and Seller winnings. (If
you do not fill in the "seller" portion ofthe ticket, the buyer winnings will be donated to the Alumni Association.)

You may sell and/or purchase as many lottery tickets as you desire, so please let us know how many tickets to send
you. If you like, you may send your check after September 15, 2001 for $1 for each ticket in books of ten tickets
and we will fill out the buyer/seller information for you as you direct us.

All lottery tickets and checks should be mailed NO LATER THAN DECEMBER 10, 2001 to:

South High School Alumni Association
6613 Sunshine Drive
Omaha, NE 68107

402/738-9493

WINNING TICKETS WILL BE DRAWN DECEMBER 15,2001
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE PRESENT TO WIN

Thank you for your helpful participation.

Respectfully,

John Krayneski, President
