In the BEGINNING
It all started with one simple question, “Why
doesn’t South High have an alumni association?”
asked by Paul Kracher-1961 after he attended
an event held by his wife’s high school. He
brought the idea to his class reunion committee
in the early 1980s. Over the next several years,
that group of determined SHS 1961 alumni
continued to toss around ideas on how an
alumni association could help SHS teachers and
students, as well as connect fellow Packers. The
talk turned into action in 1991 after their 30-year
class reunion when Rudy-1960 and Judy (Jensen) Tesar-1961 hosted a meeting in their home. Attendees
all agreed they needed to take action to get the process of creating an alumni association started.
The first official organizational meeting was held in 1992, organized by Dick Gulizia-1961. The group’s
alumni association ideas were presented to known reunion contacts from each class. The response was
overwhelming in favor of moving forward. Following that meeting, Paul Kracher teamed with Jerry Porterfield
to design a database to record SHS alumni names and addresses. Hours upon hours were spent going
through phone books to collect addresses. Dick Gulizia and Sue Smith worked with class reunion committees
to obtain their reunion name and address lists. Judi (Clark-Limas) Koubsky-1961 completed the required
paperwork to establish the association with governmental authorities.
Alumni were invited to run for election as the association’s first Board of Directors. Those interested were
invited to attend an inaugural meeting to elect officers and board members. The first officers were President
Dick Gulizia, Vice President Steve Cavlovic-1950, Treasurer Rudy Tesar and Secretary Judi Koubsky.
Other founding board members were Paul Kracher, John Krayneski-1961, Chris Saklar-1950, Judy
Tesar-1961, Jackie (Schultz) Casper-1961, Steve Lee-1966, Jim Ramirez-1952, George Reid-1945,
David Sherwood-1954 and Beverly Wirth-Murray-1976. School representatives were Principal Joyce
Christensen, drama teacher Jim Eisenhardt, and math teacher Lad Nemecek-1960. Alumni advisory board
members were Charles Bryant-1951, Bernice Labedz-1937, Steve Tomasek and Jesse Cardenas-1952.
Dues paid by the founding members and other supporters helped cover start-up costs.
And here we are, 25 years later and incredibly grateful for all the support we received through the years.
Without the support of our determined board, our dedicated volunteers, the school and all our Packer
Backers, we would have never been able to do all that we have done and be looking to what we can
accomplish in the next 25 years!
Our thanks to Judi Koubsky for contributing content for this article.

Teacher PROJECTS
Every year SHS teachers and staff are invited to submit their ideas for innovative projects or special
requests. The SHSAA Board of Directors reviews all applications with the goal of funding as many
impactful projects that touch as many students as possible. Many of these great ideas fall outside
South’s budget parameters. SHSAA is happy that, with our generous supporters, we are able to
turn these ideas into realities and help get them going.
In the past year SHSAA (with your support) has helped the baseball team get a batting cage,
assisted the newly re-formed DECA team in becoming official, helped the culinary students
complete a final food project, supported the purchase of supplies for fashion design students and
allowed the swim team to purchase a refrigerator to hold drinks/food for during/after practice.
