Fun, practical work
S pecial Olympics is an important activity
for the students enrolled in the OPS
Trainable Mentally Retarded (TMR) class
at South, but it is not their only endeavor.
TMR students are busy each day
learning and applying work skills. Various sites
where these students participate in work experi
ence include St. Joseph's Hospital, where they do
volunteer work, Veterans' Hospital Laundry, United
Enterprises, Children's Museum and UNO Food
Service. Jobs around the school are washing win
dows, dusting the library, cleaning the Math De
partment chalk boards and doing janitorial work.
These students are also involved in the school's
programs, such as Christmas Vespers, Homecoming
and Prom.
During the year the students learn how to ride
a bus independently and shop. They also participate
in various sports such as soccer, bowling, basketball,
swimming, track and softball.
After leaving South, the TMR students go on
to jobs in the community for which they have been
prepared. Mr. Tom Jodlowski, a TMR teacher, not
ed that "many go beyond our expectations."
Chad Sanders gets ready to prepare a meal in home economics.
This is just one of the school programs the students participate
in.

Pride of South CO
For all you do, this section is for you.
The staff at South is the heart of our school. The custodians
who clean it, the cafeteria staff that feeds it, the secretaries who
organize it, the counselors who advise it, the administrators who
manage it and finally the teachers w ho teach . . . these are the people
who help make South what it is.
A fter we leave South the m em ories of those adults who saw us
through our high school years will still be a part of us. From the help
you gave us w ith that algebra form ula to the frog you helped us dis
sect to the proper way to conjugate a verb, you were there.
O utside of the classroom there w ere others who influenced us
and helped us through each day. That friendly smile in the cafeteria
and that pat on the back from the custodian meant a lot to us. The
counselors who helped us sort through schedules and future plans
and the secretaries w ho assisted us with any num ber of problems
were all part of our exp erien ce at South.
W e also owe our thanks to those who run the school and who
make it possible for us to finish four years and graduate: the adm inis
trators.
Thank you staff for making 1988-'89 a year of pride and learning.

Who's this business teacher fresh out of college?
Mr. Glen Teissen.
Joyce Christensen
Mrs. 'C ' is tops
Mrs. Joyce Christensen is the principal and
a vital symbol of excellence at South High.
Her duties are endless but she performs
them with a smile and determination.
Mrs. Christensen is South's represen
tative for Public Relations and Media, does staff appraisals and
conducts staff meetings. She also is in charge of student teach
ers.
Mrs. Johnita Moody, Mrs. Christensen's secretary, says,
"She is a neat person, and I admire her very much".
South High is looking forward to the '90's and excellence
with Mrs. Christensen and her hard work. She truly is the tops!
"I am extremely ex
cited about South's
100th anniversary."
Upper right, Mrs. Joyce Christensen pauses for a moment in her busy sched
ule to smile for the yearbook photographer. This is Mrs. Christensen's sixth
year as principal of South.

Administrative
excellence abounds
W hether one calls them the administrators,
or "the necesssary ingredient for organized
student life," they are definitely an impor
tant part of South High.
Dr. Gary Thompson is the senior class
administrator and in charge of activities and the master school
calendar. He is also in charge of fund raisers and activity cards.
Mr. Jerry Bartee is the junior administrator and athletic
director. He is also in charge of in-house suspension, cafeteria,
and hall supervision.
Mrs. Laurel Mauro is the administrator for freshmen and
sophomores. Not only does she take care of all data processing
responsibilities, but is in charge of meal tickets and locker as
signments.
These three administrators work together with Mrs.
Christensen to keep the school running smoothly.
Mrs. Joyce Christensen, Mrs. Laurel Mauro, and Dr. Gary Thompson, take
a break from chaperoning at Homecoming.

Humble beginnings at SHS
A s South's 100th birthday rolls in so does the 100th
graduating class. Who makes this all possible??
Faculty and staff do. South has the best people
in all of Omaha. South embodies educational ex
cellence as the staff, faculty, and students have
proven. Staff members have come and gone, but the quality re
mains the same.
Some of these faculty and staff members began at South as
pupils.

E a c k tc the *5 C*s
V graduating senior in 1957, Mr. Jim Yelnek
is the perfect example of a fifties teen. This
is evident in that he was active in many
clubs, his favorite being Spanish Club, and
was the first male editor of the Tooter. His
favorite subjects were Spanish and geometry.
Around school Mr. Yelnek might have been seen in
such items as a pink shirt, blue suede shoes, charcoal grey
slacks, or even a flattop. On the weekends, he might have
been seen "cruisin'" the streets of Omaha, or watching
an Omaha Cardinals' baseball game.
Mr. Yelnek feels that today South is more similiar to
the fifties than people think.

Celebrating 100 years of South
High, the 1989 Taurus yearbook
selected "A Century of Pride"
as its theme. Each of the 650
copies ordered contained 186
pages, including eight pages of color in the
opening section and a special history section.
This year's book size increased to a 9 by 12
inch page size. The crest on the cover of the
Taurus was designed by junior Steve Spreitzer
and made into a gold hot foil stamp. The Tau
rus is a member of the Quill and Scroll Inter
national Journalism Honorary and the Nebras
Staffka High School Press Association.
