Today’s trucks also are more fuel
efficient. Modernize the Truck Fleet says
they have saved 101 million barrels of
crude oil and 4.2 billion gallons of diesel
fuel since 2010. And new government
mandates will require future models to
be even cleaner and more fuel efficient
through 2027. Newer trucks also are
more likely to be outfitted with safety
technologies that make roads safer.
Joyce pointed out that excise taxes
are often used to discourage what the
government considers to be harmful
behavior. In this case, however, “The
industry’s being penalized for making good
decisions.” New trucks are safer, better for
the environment, and better for drivers.
Even if the FET suspension isn’t
included in this stimulus package, Joyce
said the coalition will continue to make
its case for inclusion in future packages
or other legislation. The FET has been
in place for so long that many members
of Congress don’t know much about it
or how the economy would benefit from
suspending it.
“We continue to educate members
of Congress,” he said. “We continue to
dialogue with both Democratic and
Republican members of Congress.
We don’t view this as a Democrat or a
Republican issue. We believe this is a
jobs issue.”
Collins said NCTA has taken a
long-term approach to the issue and
will continue to advocate for it no
matter what happens with the current
pandemic legislation.
“We’re not going to let up,” she said.
“We need some relief to provide our
industry to be able to afford to upgrade
their equipment.”
