customers, truck drivers aren’t the same as
they were and if I’m going to deliver your

worth,’” he said.

It’s tough talk, but Ritter says it is born
from lessons he learned at his father’s side
in their family trucking business where they
adopted what he described as a servant
leadership style.

“My father taught me at our company
that it’s a reverse pyramid: I’m at the
bottom and the driver is at the top,” he
said. “I support the people who support
the drivers. If you think your company is a
pyramid with the owner at the top, I think
you’re always going to struggle.”

Bringing sweeping changes to an entire
industry is a pretty heavy lift, of course.
Most companies and associated industries
will likely look for more gradual ways
to address their need for drivers, or for
training future drivers. But Campion noted
that sometimes even well-laid plans can pan
out in unsuspected ways. For instance, the
idea of tapping into Maryland’s community
of military veterans as a potential source
for drivers.

“We worked for a number of years
trying to develop a Troops to Trucks
program,” he said. ‘What we found was
that, overwhelmingly, military members

The National Guard leadership felt
that if their members could get training
in an industry with meaningful career
prospects, that would actually help with
their own retention.

“We developed an abbreviated program
for people with heavy equipment skills, but
also a recruitment program for people who
might be National Guard members,” said
Campion. “The Maryland Motor Vehicle
Administration was very interested in it,
and one of our career schools was part of it.

“But it fell flat,” he said with
audible frustration.

There was a change in the National
Guard leadership, after which the interest
on their part waned and the MMTA wasn’t
able to reignite it. However, in recent weeks,
MMTA joined Task Force Movement for
Trucking, a group launched by the Biden
Administration to create pathways to

The truth is that if you have drivers that
