the North Carolina Human Trafficking
Commission, says, “We know globally
that human trafficking is the fastest
growing crime, second only to drugs,
as far as organized criminal industries.”
Long notes that there are a lot of
misconceptions about what exactly
human trafficking is, in part because
many people think of it as referring
exclusively to sex trade, but there is also
a huge pool of labor trafficking. In both
cases, it’s a hidden crime. As a result,
raising public awareness is a top directive
for the commission.

Given the abundant anecdotal evidence
of the Commission’s effectiveness,
Tarheel Wheels inquired about specific
data demonstrating the impact of their
work, including:

• The number of individuals arrested
so far in total, as well as year over year

• The number of individuals rescued so
far, as well as year over year

• Of those rescued, the number of
males and number of females and
their respective age groups

• The list of intended use for those
rescued (e.g. sex, labor)

• The top five cities in N.C. for
human trafficking

• How many are abducted versus
coerced over time

• The common places from which
victims are abducted or approached

When we inquired, Long responded,
“Trust me, if there was specific data
like you’ve asked for, then we would be
distributing it to everyone, everywhere.”
Data is complicated, Long said, not

Nichols also pointed out that increased
reporting of trafficking does more than
arrest criminals; it puts authorities in a
better position to have compassion and
understand what can be done to help
victims. The end goal is to find a solution
for them and get them the help
they need.

Nichols emphasizes that if a victim of
human trafficking broke the law, they
may still be subject to appropriate jail
time. But, their actions weren’t entirely
of their own volition. Traffickers, he
explains, get in the heads of the victims.
They try to find people with low self-
esteem, such as runaways, who are
on their last leg. The trafficker may
manipulate the victim through false
pretenses of love and companionship.
When they do that to one victim, they’re
also doing it to the next.
