LEARNING UNIT 1

EVIDENCE
-an article or piece of information supplied to
make the existence of a reality more or less
likely. Evidence can take the shape of
testimony, papers, pictures, films, voice
recordings, DNA tests, or other tangible
artefacts.

HISTORY
-History is the study of change over time that
encompasses all elements of human
civilization. History includes political, social,
economic, scientific, technical, medical,
cultural, intellectual, religious, and military
advancements.

HISTORIOGRAPHY
-the writing of history, especially the writing of
history based on the critical assessment of
sources, the selection of specific details from
those facts, and the synthesis of those data into
a narrative that stands the test of critical
investigation. Historiography is also used to
describe the philosophy and history of
historical writing.

1. Ancient History

3. Malay Archipelago

islands, approximately 7000 Philippine islands, and, on
occasion, New Guinea.
Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia (East Malaysia),
Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Singapore are all part
of it.

1. Capitalism

Capitalism is a widely used economic system in

Colonialism is the practice of one country
assuming complete or partial political control of
another and populating it with settlers in order to
profit from its resources and economy.
The benefits were considerable, particularly for
many of the European, African, and Asian
countries affected by British colonialism.

3. Trade

The voluntary exchange of products or services
between different economic players is referred to
as trade.
Trade can have more specific meanings in
different contexts. In financial markets, trade
refers to purchasing and selling securities,
commodities, or derivatives.

1. Sphere of influence:

A region within a country over which it has power, and is
separate from whoever traditionally controls it.
Example: In the late nineteenth century, the Anglo-Russian
Convention of 1970 was adopted by eight different foreign
countries.

2. Territory Subjects:

Geographical areas are subject to the control, jurisdiction,
and sovereignty of a state.
Example: Social Studies, Human Geography, and Geography.

3. Political Division:

The occurrence of a struggle between countries to obtain
great power for the benefit of their own country.
Example: Division of Northern Malay State between Siam and
British.

4. Resource Exploitation:

Actions in working, and developing natural resources unfairly
for profit and interests own.
Example: Coal-As a heat source

Natural gas-Electricity production
Petroleum-An important raw material for the
petrochemical industry

5. Industrial Revolution:

The process of change in socioeconomic order from agrarian
and handicraft methods to machine manufacturing.
Example: New market, new scientific discoveries, and new
resources.

1. Immigrant

-A person who comes to a country to take up permanent residence
-The city has a large immigrant population.

2. Population

A population is defined as a group of individuals of the same species living
and interbreeding within a given area.
The population of China is larger than that of Japan

3. Ethnic Identity

-Ethnic identity is a multidimensional concept that includes self-
categorization or labeling, commitment or attachment to a group, certain
values and beliefs that are associated with the group, and an evaluation of the
group which can be positive or negative.
-It is no wonder that, as nationalist identities intensified in the city, ethnic
identity remained important and ethnic groups vowed not to disband.

4. Heritage

Heritage is the full range of our inherited traditions, monuments, objects, and
culture.
America was founded without any distinct heritage but rather an ideal of
combining diverse cultures

1. Orang Asli

- Orang Asli literally means ‘natural people’ in Malay and refers to
the rural and minority indigenous people who inhabit the Malay

Peninsula.
- Progress had also been made in the survey and gazetting exercise

for Orang Asli land.



2. Heterogeneous

- consisting of dissimilar or diverse ingredients or constituents
- The seating in the hall was a heterogeneous collection of old
school desk chairs, wood and metal folding chairs, and even a few

3. Austroasiatic

- of, relating to, or constituting a family of languages of south and
southeast Asia that includes Mon-Khmer and Munda as
subfamilies

1. Absolute Monarchy
Definition : An absolute monarchy is a form of
government in which a single person. Usually a king or

queen holds absolute, autocratic power.
Example : Arising during the Middle Ages, absolute
monarchy prevailed in much of western Europe by the

16th century.



2. Capitalism
Definition : An economic system characterized by
private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by
investments that are determined by private decision,
and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods
that are determined mainly by competition in a free

market.
Example : Capitalism is practiced enthusiastically by

capitalists, people who use capital to increase
production and make more goods and money.
Capitalism works by encouraging competition in a fair

and open market.



3. Communism
Definition : A system in which goods are owned in
common and are available to all as needed and a theory

advocating elimination of private property.
Example : Today, the word communism usually refers to

the political and economic ideologies originating from
Karl Marx's theory of revolutionary socialism, which
advocates a proletariat overthrow of capitalist
structures within a society.


4. Solidarity
Definition : Agreement between and support for the
members of a group, especially a political group.

Example : The motivation is more to do with protecting
the inherited connection between social solidarity and

national sovereignty.

SECRET SOCIETIES
-is a club or organisation whose activities, events,
inner workings, or membership are hidden. The
group may or may not try to conceal its existence.
-Oral traditions state that during the pre-conquest
period, the organisation was mostly made up of
"regular people" who functioned as a secret society.

KONGSI
-In (particularly overseas) Chinese culture and

society, a family house.



MIGRATION
-The migration of a person or individuals from one
nation, area, place of residence, etc., to another; an
example of this. Migration is, first and foremost, a

typical human behaviour. Humans have always
relocated from one country, area, [and] place of

habitation to another.
-During the chilly months, it is always fascinating to

watch the birds migrate as they travel towards
warmer climates.

STUDENT
Definition: a person who is enrolled in a

degree-granting program (either
undergraduate or graduate) at an
institution of higher learning and
registered full-time according to the
definition of his/her respective academic
institution, and who is not employed full-

time.
Example: The student movements in
Malaysia can be traced back to Islamic
movements in Middle East and Southern

Asia influence.
