Gilbert T Hodges Jr. is credited with bringing golf to the small town of Monroe Wisconsin in 1909 using a family 60-acre tract on the east edge of the city. He helped half a dozen people get the swing of it and thus an idea was born. It wasn’t until the spring of 1923 that H.M. Place secured a lease from the local fairgrounds association to maintain a 5-hole golf course on their property. The fairgrounds project was the catalyst that ignited the flame for a 9-hole full size golf course. So began the search for land suitable for the “sportiest golf course in Wisconsin”. On October 1st, 1923, 56 acers were purchased by the newly formed club from Fred E. Blumer. After acquiring the land in record time, prominent golf course architects Harry B. Smead aided by Tom Bendelow and engineer Peter N. Jans began to layout the first full 9 holes at Monroe Golf Club. The rolling knolls and ravines, the winding brooks, and majestic maple trees converged to bring a spectacular playing experience to Southwest Wisconsin. Our 18-hole, 12-hole and 9-hole course options coupled with multiple sets of tees, allow MGC to cater to golfers all age and skill levels. The lush golf course has long been known for its unique layout, playability and fantastic greens. Our newly designed and renovated sand traps are best in class. Due to the growing popularity of the course, we strongly encourage all players to make tee times, regardless of the time of play. Tee times can be made by calling the golf shop during regular hours of operation or by using the MGC mobile app. Please repair pitch marks, rake sand traps, and fill in divots when available. Please be courteous to all members, non members, & staff alike.
