Kindness Wood Booklet

“Making the most out of a log is at the heart of what we do.”

“Making the most out of a log is at the heart of what we do.”

Introduction

This collaborative project between Studio AOK,
an architectural and multidisciplinary design
studio, and Champaca Wood, a manufacturer of
architectural wood products.

The rising trend in sustainable design may have
resulted in reclaimed wood and recycled materials
being applied more widely, yet, besides ticking off
the eco- friendly box and extending the lifeline of
certain materials for a short period, few practices
invest in making a long term impact on the
resources they are using.

As a manufacturer, Champaca recognise that
even though waste is an inevitable part of the
production process,it is vital for us to seek out for
more opportunities to save more and waste less.

Working together with Studio AOK, we have
co-created this exhibition that explores the
boundless potential of this material concept and
the level of impact that we will make. We hope to
inspire you to join us on this journey of discovery.

The Wood Industry

A large part of the market has grown accustomed to
the taste of perfection – uniform and only selected
natural characteristics of wood This subjective
ideal created a certain standard that is expected
to be met and those that do not conform are simply
seen as waste.

The lumber industry has always been
categorising log parts into grades: A, B, C, D and
discards. Only a little more than 10 percent of the
log would be considered ‘preferred’ and 60
percent a mix of natural characteristics that are
often less desirable. Any part of the log that may
have small markings, knots or blemishes - all of
which are marks of nature anda part of the
natural growth of a tree - gets labelled as
unwanted, rejects, and off-cuts. This means that
a huge amount of wood ends up going to waste,
simply because they’re deemed ‘less than perfect’
or rather ironically, ‘too natural’.

Despite being considered as one of the most
renewable resources that only need water, soil
and sunlight for its production, it can take over a
hundred years for some species of trees to reach
optimum size for harvest. It only takes a few
minutes to cut down, a few days to process, and a
few weeks to be made into the final products we
use in our daily lives. Sadly, with the current
demand, it means that the trees are being cut
down at a faster rate than we are planting them.

Since reforestation and conservation efforts in
Thailand have only begun around fifty years ago,
there is still significantly more work to be done if
we want to secure healthy forests and clean air
that the next generation will need to survive.

Our Ethos

To invoke change, the status quo must be challenged.
Trends and expectations of ‘perfection' that have
been set can certainly progress into something more
meaningful and we plan to be a part of this movement.
Just like how no two people are alike, the same can be
said about trees.

We believe that every piece of wood is truly unique;
their rawness, natural markings and indentations tell a
story of who they are. This irreplicable beauty is what
we intend to preserve and we can do this by making
the most out of every log.

Using our integrated approach, we have developed a
platform to create unique raw materials from wood
off-cuts and scraps. With this unique materials, we
hope to show designers the potential of their usage in
creative practices as well as to encourage the general
public to be curious about sustainable ideas that can
have a meaningful impact on the environment.
