Last year, I had the opportunity to visit Bangkok- my first ever trip out of the country without my family. I was obviously thrilled but which 17 year old wouldn9t be? I went with three other friends and we booked a six day tour agency. Our flight took abot two and a half hours from KLIA and landed safely. Then we made our way to Baiyoke Hotel situated right in the city centre. The climate in Bangkok is not much different from Kuala Lumpur – hot and humid. But if you think thr traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur is really bad, then you have yet to see the worst. In the congested streets of Bangkok, vehicles squeeze and cram into any available space and it can take almost an hour even if the distance may be just 3 km away! After we checked in an freshehed up, we went off to an authentic Thai restaurant to enjoy delicious Thai cuisine while being entertained by elegant and graceful traditional Thai dancers. There was also a Thai boxing demonstration. The food was superb and everyone seemed to enjoy the pandan chicken and seafood tom yum soup the most. However , little did we realise that our culinary experience had jusr begun. Everyday we were brought to different types of eateries- from street food to upscale restaurants- ane we were served with all kinds of irresistable, mouth-watering temptations. On one ocassion, we went to a restaurant where the buffet spread was so long that the waiters had to use rollerskates to move around! Another highlighted of the trip was the tour of Bangkok which i found quite interesting. We visited many temples as well as a crocodile and a snake farm which gave me the creeps. One place that i really liked was the floating market which you should not give a miss. You will see vendors selling their products from souvenirs to fodd to household items from their wooden boats. The Rose Garden was next on our list but do not be deceived by the name. There were hardly any roses there! It was actually a place to showcase the diversity of Thai culture. We got to see more Thai traditional dancing and Thai Boxing. Bangkok is indeed a shopping heaven. We went to their famous Pratunam Shopping Complex where you could find really cheap imitations of branded products. There were branded leather jackets, wallets, bags ,T-shirts and perfumes all going for a song. We also went to Chatuchak Market which is another tourist attraction . However, I did not like this place as it was too crowded with shoppers jostling and pushing. And with hundreds od sellers in the vicinity, it was not possible to visit every stall, although there were so many thing to see. Before I knew it, the six-day tour had come to an end. It was a memorable trop and I had a lot of fun with my friends. Would I visit Thailand again? Yes, absolutely ! There is still so much to discover and the amazing food is enough reason for me to return Downloaded by RIYASHINI ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|13043927

The Creightons were very proud of their son, Frank. When he went to college, naturally they missed him; but he wrote and they looked forward to his letters and saw him on weekends. Then Frank was drafted into the army. After he had been in the army for about five months, he received his call to go to Vietnam. Of course, the parents9 anxiety for his first letter was greater than ever before. And every week they heard from him and were thankful for his well-being. Then one week went by without a letter, two weeks and finally three. At the end of the third week a telegram came, saying, <We regret to inform you that you son has been missing for three weeks and is presumed to have been killed in action while fighting for his country.= The parents were shocked and grieved. They tried to accept the situation and go on living, but it was tragically lonesome without Frank. About three weeks later, however, the phone rang. When Mrs. Creighton answered it, a voice on the other end said, <Mother, it9s Frank. They found me, and I9m going to be all right. I9m in the United States and I9m coming home soon.= Mrs. Creighton was elated, with tears running down her cheeks, she sobbed, <Oh, that9s wonderful! That9s just wonderful, Frank.= There was silence for a moment, and then Frank said, <Mother I want to ask you something that is imperative to me. While I9ve been here, I9ve met a lot of wonderful people and I9ve really become close friends with some. There is one fellow I would like to bring home with me to meet you and Dad. And I would like to know if it would be all right if he could stay and live with us, because he has no place to go.= His mother assured him it would be all right. Then Frank said, <You see, he wasn9t9 as fortunate as some; he was injured in battle. He was hit by a blast and his face is all disfigured. He lost his leg, and his right hand is missing. So you see, he feels apprehensive about how others will accept him.= Frank9s mother stopped to think a minute. She began to wonder how things would work out with a cripple at home, and she worried about how the people in town would react to someone like that. She said, <Sure frank, you bring him home, for a visit, that9s it. We would love to meet him and have him stay for a while; but about him staying with us permanently, well, we9ll have to think about that.= There was silence for a minute, and then Frank said, <Okay, Mother,= and hung up. A week went by without any word from Frank, and then a telegram arrived, <We regret to inform you that your son has taken his own life. We would like you to come and identify the body.= Their wonderful son was gone. The devastated parents could only ask themselves, <Why had he done this?= When they walked into the room to identify the body of their son, they found a young man with a disfigured face, one leg missing, and his right hand gone. In paragraph 2, we learned that Frank was pronounced dead, and both Frank9s parents found it hard to cope with their life without Frank. But after four weeks of receiving the news of their son9s death, they had gotten a phone call from Frank himself. In paragraph 4, Frank was the only person who mentioned that he was going home soon. Born as Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, India, Nana Patekar as he is known today, is a simple man with minimum needs and a heart of gold which is a rare feat to achieve these days. He is a bright man with a point of view, who speaks his mind and is brutally honest while expressing his opinions on and off camera. His incredible work in Bollywood can never be forgotten or replaced simply because actors of his calibre are a rare phenomenon. Nana Patekar, known for his simple lifestyle, has been generous in donating to charities. His generosity comes from his experiences in life. When he was just 13, his family went from being middle class to lower middle class and finally lower class, as someone close to his father took away everything he had including his property. With his family facing dire financial problems, Nana had to start working at the age of 13. After school, he would walk eight kilometres to Chunabhatti to paint film posters to make 35 rupees per month. He only got a meal a day. The humiliation and hunger taught him so much that he did not need to go to any acting school. He had to be the sole breadwinner as his father had lost everything. Nana9s father was always worried and depressed that eventually he had a heart attack and died when his son was 28. His father9s parting left a gaping hole in his heart. Though he was deprived of many things as a teenager, he was rather happy as he wanted to see his parents happy and not worry about him. Despite having to start working at a young age, he did enjoy it. He used to like sweets so much at that time, but since he could not afford them then, till today, he does not eat sweets. He used to go to his friends9 houses at lunch time or dinner time, hoping that they would offer him food. He has been a part of numerous incredible movies. He has carried out splendid and extra-ordinary performances in films like Parindaa, Krantiveer, Apharan, Ab tak Chappan and many others and his work has been aptly recognized time and again for which he has been awarded and nominated quite a number of times. An actor of his grandeur is expected to be rude, ruthless, over-confident and self-centred. However, Nana Patekar is a gem of a person, the exact opposite of what his fans expect him to be. He has had his ups-and-downs and now he stands like a rock supporting others and his other philanthropic works. He contributed money towards rebuilding the flood-ravaged villages in Bihar through a charitable organization, Anubhuthi. A humble and down-to-earth man whose house is only 750 square feet, he donated all the monetary remuneration he obtained for his performance in the movie Paathshaala to five different charitable organisations. His foundation has also managed to collect Rs22 million for the welfare of the farmers, which aims to fill dried lakes and rivers with clean drinking water for the community. Using a Twitter campaign with the hashtag I care I support, Nana Patekar was able to obtain funds to help Maharashtra drought victims. He also provided financial aid to families of farmers who committed suicide due to indebtedness brought about by drought. He distributed cheques worth Rs 15,000 to 62 families of farmers from Vidarbha region in August 2015 and another 113 families from Latur and Osmanabad districts of Marathwada in September 2015. Explaining why he does what he does and his dedication towards the cause, he confessed, <Marte dum tak jeenay ki wajah mil gai hai mujhe,= which translates to <I have found a reason to live till I die.= Adapted from Wikipedia Downloaded by RIYASHINI ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|13043927

Part 3 You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet. _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ My wife and I decided that we should do something for society. My wife suggested running an old folks9 home as we both had seen our parents struggling through their illness in their later years. We had looked after our parents with much love and had watched them go in peace. But there were so many other lonely souls who had nobody. Perhaps we could do something for them. My father9s last words rang in my ears. He had said that we should give more to society when we could. He had been a living example of his words. He always helped people in need. Whether people needed a hot meal, some advice or some cash, he was there for them. However, he didn9t do anything with hopes of getting something in return. He told me specifically not to expect anything from anyone. Thus, I will never be disappointed. Do not keep hatred in your heart, he had said. Do not spoil you9re your todays by worrying about tomorrow. Live a simple, you really don9t need a lot of luxurious items to be happy. His words had had a powerful impact on me. Yesterday, I had one of those moments which stay in our memories for a long time. A 92- year-old man moved into our folks9 home. He looked well and carried himself with great dignity. He was one who took great trouble with his appearance. His wife had just passed away. Now he needed looking after. I described the small room to him in great detail, including the curtains that hung in his room. <I like it very much,9 he said with an enthusiasm of an eight-year-old boy who had been given a small puppy. <Sir, you haven9t seen the room yet. Hang on a moment, we9re almost there,= I said. <That has nothing to do with it=, he replies. <Happiness is something to choose in advance. Whether I like it or not does not depend on the furniture or the décor. It depends on how I decide to see it. It is already decided in my mind that I like my room. It is a decision I take every day in the morning. I can choose. I can spend the day counting all the difficulties that I have with the different parts of my body that no longer work very well or I can get up and give thanks to the heavens for those parts that are still in working order. Every day is a gift and as long as I can open my eyes, I will focus on the new day and all the memories that I have built up during my life. Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw in later life what you deposited along the way. My advice to you is to deposit all happiness you can in your bank account of memories=. I listened quietly to the old man9s comments. I found out that his name is Steven. He had a wonderful attitude to life. He didn9t grumble about what he didn9t have. Neither did he grouse about the situation he was in. He had such a wonderfully positive outlook that it was infectious. During his stay, he talked to the other people who were there and helped them in whatever way he could. He would take the morning coffee for wheelchair-bound Mrs. Tan and read the newspapers for Mr. Siva who was visually impaired. Sometimes he would break into one of those evergreen melodies and make everyone else sing along with him. Steve was a ray of sunshine in our home and I was glad that he was there. One morning the nurse went to take Steven as he hadn9t risen as usual. She rushed out within seconds to say that Steven had passed away. An atmosphere of gloom descended on the home. Our lives had been enriched by Steven9s presence. It was how one had lived and whose lives had been touched by one9s presence that mattered. Steven had touched our lives with his love and positive attitude. Mrs. Siva hummed one of the songs Steven used to sing. The other joined too. READING PART 4 Be A Wise Shopper Do you consider yourself to be a wise shopper? In order to be labelled as a wise shopper, you must not be influenced by advertisements in the mass media such as the television, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Have you noticed that advertisements only show the positive side of a product without revealing the shortcomings? Does this mean that the product being advertised does not have any disadvantages? Advertisements in fact can be very misleading and consumers often tricked into buying products. For example, to promote a certain brand of shampoo, an attractive girl with long, shiny hair is shown on television. (2)_______ Without a list, you will be tempted to buy the items on sale and hence end up buying unnecessary items. You will not only end up with unnecessary things but also spend a lot of money. Furthermore, it is a good habit to compare prices in shops. By doing this, you will know where to get what you want to buy at the cheapest price. This practice is particularly useful for big families since they buy in large quantities. (3)_______ Be careful when you buy things during a sale. Don9t be fooled! You know your prices first before you buy anything at a sale. (4)_______ Also, many goods during sales are old or rejects. Make sure you check the goods carefully before buying. (5)________ Ensure that tins are not dented or damaged. The expiry dates should be well ahead of time. This will enable you to use the products for some time in the future. Goods that can last a long time can be brought in large quantities. (6)________ This is especially true if you have a big family. Buying in bulk will save your money and it will not go to waste. By following the above steps, I hope you will be wise shoppers and spend your money wisely. A It is cheaper to buy in bulk. B Different people have different ideas. Reading: Part 5 We interviewed six teenagers about the occupation that they want to choose when they grow up. Read the texts and answer the questions that follow. Sought-after Occupations Among Teenagers A – Aliyah, 17 years old I want to be a doctor when I grow up. To me, health is above everything else in the world. The satisfaction of saving lives and restoring patients9 health goes far beyond the feeling of other achievements. Despite the long and gruelling hours of work in the filed of medicine, I know my life will be happier when I can put a big smile on the patient9s and the family members9 faces. B – Nelson, 15 years old I want to be a teacher when I grow up. As a teacher, I can make a difference in the lives of many students. I want to make students work harder than they think they could. I can make a C+ feel like a congressional medal of honour for some students but an A- feel like a slap in the face for other students. Nonetheless, in addition to teaching content, a teacher has to prepare and update students9 performance indicators on a regular basis. The excessive paperwork might make it difficult for teachers to have a work-life balance. C – Henrianus, 16 years old I want to be an entrepreneur when I grow up. I want a lifestyle that is not bound to nine to five. For me, the prospect of working an average job is not as rewarding and aspiring as a successful entrepreneur. Although building a successful business takes a lot of time and risks, I am willing to bite the bullet. As the old adage goes, entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won9t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can9t. I believe entrepreneurship will allow me to achieve financial success and freedom one day in future. D – Avinash, 14 years old I want to be an electrical engineer when I grow up. I have always been fascinated by electrical systems and machinery since small. Good electrical engineers need a variety of skills to excel in their roles. For example, electrical engineers need to have problem-solving skills so that they can solve complex problems while troubleshooting failed products. Besides that, they must be decisive as they need to make firm and informed decisions about their products. E – Ker Yee, 17 years old I want to be a lawyer when I grow up. Being a lawyer, I will have the chance to use my legal skills to help people, animals and the environment. Lawyers can also enjoy flexibility in their job. For example, lawyers can set their own fees, choose their working hours and select clients they want to work with. However, this profession has zero tolerance for mistakes as a mistake might cost a client9s millions of dollars or freedom. F – Nur Fazleen, 15 years old I want to be a musician when I grow up. I prefer a job that is relaxing and entertaining at the same time, so being a musician is just the perfect job for me. Studies show that playing a musical instrument on a regular basis helps lower stress. Apparently, music also can lower the heart rate and blood pressure, too. READING Part 5 Questions 33-40 Below are six questions to ask before buying gemstones. Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow. A.Is calibrating your computer important? Yes, as no two people recognize colour in the same way, and you could say the same about computer monitors! A colour corrected monitor will at least ensure that you are seeing the same colours as those in the photograph of the gemstone. Check the brightness and contrast as well as the gamma range. B. What are the Four Cs of this diamond? The obvious place to start with any diamond is the Four Cs, also known as cut, clarity, colour and carat weight. The salesperson should be able to offer information in all four categories and, crucially, explain why this matters. Just telling you a diamond solitaire is an F colour isn9t helpful without context, explanation and possibly comparison to other stones. C.Where does this coloured gemstone originate from? Some retailers and designer brands will be able to tell you exactly where a gemstone has originated from, A consumer, expects a retailer to have had conversations about gemstone origin with their suppliers and to pass that information on to you unlike diamonds, gemstones doesn't have a fixed Kimberley Process-type scheme in place and there are a number of 'stages' from mine-to-market, including sorting, cutting, polishing and finishing. A gemstone may have journeyed to many parts of the world before ending up in a finished jewellery piece. D.What factors make this coloured gemstone a good choice for me? Buying a piece of fine gemstone jewellery should be enjoyable and it is important that the piece you choose reflects your personality and tastes. A salesperson should be able to discuss the particulars of a gemstone, such as its colour, clarity, any visible inclusions, as well as broader factors like whether it is a particular birthstone. Choosing the 8ideal9 gemstone is more subjective than choosing a diamond, so be prepared to follow your instincts. E. Does the website offer a 30 day inspection period ? What if the gemstone that you purchased does not meet your expectations? It can be difficult to get an idea of actual size when you are looking at an enlarged photograph on a screen. A wide window on returns gives you adequate time to send something back if need be. F. How should I care for my gemstone or diamond jewellery piece? Make sure to find out what cleaning techniques are suitable for your gems before leaving the store. Some gem materials are heat sensitive, some like pearls and amber can react badly to commercial cleaners, and others are damaged by ultrasonic cleaning. Ask the right questions and get accurate information before taking a chance. https://gem-a.com/gem-hub/gem-knowledge/buying-guide-gemstone-jewellery Downloaded by RIYASHINI ([email protected]) lOMoARcPSD|13043927
