Does Hybrid Mess with Sleep Schedules?

Hybrid changing sleep schedules
Gabby Krenitsky
Feature
12 March 2021

This school year has been a very strange and confusing year for everyone. From going online to going hybrid, many can agree
that sleep hasn’t been the easiest to keep in check. It’s been very challenging for many students and teachers to resist staying
up at night watching their favorite tv show or catching up on work, especially with the current hybrid schedule many schools
are running on.

One of the many things keeping both students and teachers up at night is their devices and the blue light emitted from them.
“While light of any kind can suppress the secretion of melatonin, blue light at night does so more powerfully,” said Harvard
Health
This means that any student or teacher watching their phones while trying to go to sleep won’t have much luck. The blue light
only makes it more challenging. Olentangy Math Teacher Amy Dieterle can agree.
“Having your phone on and the blue light actually wakes people up instead of helping them sleep better,” Dieterle said.
This relates to hybrid because since school is on and off throughout the week, even more temptation to stay up late will be pres-
ent.
“They feel they have a luxury to do it, which they could but it’s just not smart to do,” Dieterle said.
The hybrid schedule makes it easier to be tempted to stay up on days where students don’t have to show up to school. Since the
school days are every other day, students feel that they only have to worry about sleep when they have school the next morning.
Staying up late one night and going to bed early the next night is a schedule that isn’t easy to get on. Usually, if one stays up
late for a night or two even after a full week of going to sleep early, their sleep schedule can get thrown off. Medical News Today
agrees.
“Staying up very late disrupts the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, which can affect a person’s mental functioning and energy
levels the next day,” Medical News Today said.
Staying up late like this affects how people function and their ability to sleep the next night.
There has most certainly been a noticeable difference between age groups when it comes to struggling with sleep schedules.
Gage Renton, a third grader at Heritage Elementary School hasn’t been terribly affected by the hybrid plan. He said he will some-
times stay up later on nights that he doesn’t have school, but his bed time is usually around eight to eight-thirty. This means that
Renton doesn’t really have trouble falling asleep early, which is great for his sleep schedule and energy levels. The difference is,
Renton is in third grade. Since he’s much younger than a highschool student. His parents don’t have to be as flexible with him. It’s
most likely easier for the young student to get his homework done faster than some older students, meaning that he can easily go
to bed early and not worry about any unfinished work. His parents can have a much
more put together schedule that Renton has to follow. It can be challenging for parents who have older students though. There’s
more distractions, homework and other things that could keep schedules filled up. These teens are also more independent than
what a third grader may be. They can get themselves ready for bed and ready for school and make their own decisions based on
what’s best for them. With hybrid though, older students may find it more challenging to be able to sleep correctly. With no specif-
ic bedtime, one may stay up late because there’s no school to worry about the next day. The pattern of going to bed late one night
and going to bed early the next can really hurt a sleep schedule. That’s why the younger ones with specific bedtimes, even if there
isn’t any school, will have an easier time keeping their sleep schedule nice and steady.
Hybrid also has been causing trouble with procrastination. Since students have online school half of the time, the homework
given in real class can get put off.
“When they’re on their off days, they’re sleeping until one p.m. and it’s a bad cycle. So that means they’re starting stuff at one
p.m. Well maybe they haven’t planned their stuff well so then they’re doing the work until one a.m. that they put off,” said Dieterle.
Students may think to start something later in the day, but the project will appear bigger than expected. This can lead students
to staying up later in the evening to finish the assignment because they are waiting too long to do it. This schedule has appeared
to become misleading, making many students believe that their online days are just days off. This leads them to think that they can
just wait to do homework until the last second. Many students may lose motivation in their work or get bored, so they put it off.
“I feel like we’re not as productive or motivated as we used to be when we were on less of a chaotic schedule,” said special edu-
cation teacher Lori Conley.
When school goes back to normal, many of the students and teachers feel that they will be more motivated to get their work
done. They’ll be on an overall better schedule and more put together.
“I’m very excited to go back to full time. I feel that we all will have more motivation to finish up the school year on a strong note
and students will start to get much better sleep” said Conley.
Both students and teachers are ready to get off of this chaotic year. They’re exhausted and
want to get back to a comfortable and easy to control sleep schedule so they can feel more refreshed during the day. It’s about
time everyone gets back to full time school so they can have a much easier time getting on a steady sleep schedule.

HOLIDAYS

Noelle is a movie based around Santa’s family, specifically
his daughter Noelle. Ever since she was young, she has
always been known to put joy in people’s hearts around
the North Pole. When her Father passes away it’s up to Nick
Kringle, Noelle’s brother, to train and become the next Santa
in time for Christmas. When Noelle notices that Nick is very
stressed out, she suggests he takes the weekend off to go
somewhere warm, but he disappears for longer than expect-
ed. It’s up to Noelle to find him after taking the sleigh down to
Phoenix Arizona, and save Christmas.

This movie is comparable to a modern day
Elf. It has that same Christmas feel and
energy, but is much more relatable to
kids today. In addition, Anna Kendrick is the
actress for Noelle. She’s been very popular
lately in movies, so it was a great touch! She
really carries that bubbly personality needed
for this role. This goes along with all of the
other actors and actresses too. They all really
portray their characters well because they
have that same type of energy. It really brings
the movie to life!

Overall, I adored this movie. It was actually pretty funny. I thought it was a great movie for all ages,
even if it appears to be a movie for younger ones. Now yes, this movie is pretty cheesy and some
people may not enjoy that. If so, then there’s plenty of other amazing Christmas movies out there!
But for the others, I would highly recommend this movie to put you in the Christmas mood, even if it’s on
in the background during some fun traditions you and your family may do! The only thing that I would
say about it is there are many scenes that appear to be very closely similar to the movie Elf, but if you
love that movie like me, then that shouldn’t be too much of a problem! The cast is also amazing. Bill Hader,
Anna Kendrick, Shirley MacLaine, Julie Hagerty, and all of the others are absolutely amazing at their jobs
and so fun to watch on screen. Putting all of this together, I would personally rate this movie 4.5/5 Candy
