Makeup
Inspired
by Art

Makeup is a powerful thing. It can transform us into whoever or whatever we want.
Many makeup artists create stunning looks for every occasion we can imagine.
Also let’s not forget their talent when it comes to special movie effects, where they
can transform a human into an entirely different creature. Likewise, some artists spend six
to eight hours recreating art masterpieces on their faces and bodies! Makeup inspired by art
masterpieces is very impressive. It is both an ode to the masters of art and a celebration of
contemporary creativity!

“Of course, the list of artistic inspiration is
long, the aforementioned ones are only a few
examples. What do you think? Would you like
to see more makeup inspired by art? Would
you recreate one yourself?

M CIMI HOI In our long-running series, "How I'm Making It,"
we talk to people making a living in the fashion
and beauty industries about how they broke in
and found success. You may not know makeup
artist Mimi Choi by name, but you've most likely
seen and marveled at her work. Especially if you
paid any attention to the 2019 Met Gala. Known
for stunningly realistic illusions and 3-D effects,
Choi showed off her mind-boggling skills at this
year's fashion prom via Ezra Miller, who sported
one of her classic, trippy, "multi-feature" looks
for the occasion. Her attention to detail, seem-
ingly boundless creativity and raw artistic talent
have earned her plenty of industry attention,
master class opportunities and partnerships with
brands like MAC and Make Up For Ever not to
mention a whopping 1.1 million followers on
Instagram. Just a week after the Met Gala, Choi
took some time to discuss her unique career
trajectory — and arguably more unique makeup
style — with Fashionista.

Art Makeup Trend

And yet, she's only been at it for about five years.
Choi's first career was as a preschool teacher in
Vancouver, where she still lives. Having immi-
grated there from Macau, a Portuguese colony in
China, with her parents as a child, she spent most
of her time growing up focused on academics, with
little time to devote to the arts (let alone makeup
art). But in her 20s, she began feeling listless and
burned out, at which point her mother suggest-
ed she make a change and pursue her creative
passions. Choi's work, which evokes such artistic
visionaries as Salvador Dalí and M.C. Escher, can
be fantastical, unnerving and even disturbing. She
suffers from sleep paralysis, experiencing bouts
during which she has vivid, sometimes morbid and
frightening, visions, which she then channels into
her makeup artistry as a means of self-expression
and self-care."You might find it bizarre that I like
to paint weird things on my face and other people's
faces to be happy, but that's what it is. It makes me
happy so I'm going to continue to do it," she says.

How Much the Average
Woman Spends on
Makeup In Her Life

Rosy Lip & Blush Duo Power Palette Powder Face Trio
When you look at your latest Sephora or Ulta 4 Minute Plant & Go Routine Set
haul, it's easy to see why it feels like your mon-
ey just flies out the window. Beauty products
are expensive! Plus, there's skin-care, and hair
products and the list goes on and on. Well, now
you can take solace in knowing that you're not
alone. A recent survey done by beauty e-tailer
SkinStore, showed that women in the United
States spend about $300,000 just on their face
during their lifetime. $300,000. Let that sink in.
Buzzfeed reports that SkinStore surveyed 3,000
women to find out their beauty habits. In addi-
tion to the crazy-sounding lifetime cost, the sur-
vey says women are walking around with about
$8 worth of products on their face per day.
That's just an average though. It really depends
on where you live. Women who live on the East
Coast have what the survey calls "expensive fac-
es," clocking in at $11. That differs from wom-
en on the West Coast, who are walking around
with $5 of products on their face. New York,
Connecticut, and West Virginia spend the most,
and Montana spends the least.

In Bollywood

In 1955 the Bollywood group Cine Costume Make-
Up Artist & Hair Dressers' Association (CCMAA)
created a rule that did not allow women to ob-
tain memberships as makeup artists. However, in
2014 the Supreme Court of India ruled that this
rule was in violation of the Indian constitutional
guarantees granted.(right to equality), (freedom
to carry out any profession) (right to liberty).
The judges of the Supreme Court of India stated
that the ban on women makeup artist members
had no "rationale nexus" to the cause sought to be
achieved and was "unacceptable, impermissible
and inconsistent" with the constitutional rights
guaranteed to the citizens. The Court also found
illegal the rule which mandated that for any artist,
female or male, to work in the industry, they must
have domicile status of five years in the state where
they intend to work.In 2015 it was announced that
Charu Khurana had become the first woman to be
registered by the Cine Costume Make-Up Artist &
Hair Dressers' Association. In June 2014, the Cine
Costume Make-Up Artist & Hair Dressers' Asso-
ciation (CCMAA) authorised an official protest on
the movie set of Bang Bang! in protest of a foreign
makeup artist, Daniel Bauer, working on the mov-
ie for its lead actress, Katrina Kaif. The CCMAA
and 15 of its members protested on the movie set
as Daniel Bauer was not registered with the Union,
despite the Union banning foreign artists working
in Bollywood. The issue was resolved with the
CCMAA granting Daniel Bauer full membership.

Makeup artist profile description
Makeup artists are beauty practi-
tioners who offer general makeup
services or work in prosthetic design. Their
primary duties include enhancing facial aes-
thetics through makeup, creating custom
looks for clients, and working with actors on
movie sets.
As a make-up artist, your work will involve
creating images and characters through the
medium of make-up, hairstyles and pros-
thetics according to a brief. You'll interpret
the make-up requirements of clients to pro-
duce both a creative and technically accurate
visual representation. This may involve very
basic make-up for a TV presenter through
to more complex period make-up or special
effects. You may work alone and perhaps in a
freelance capacity, as an assistant to a more
senior colleague or as part of a make-up de-
sign team. In the media industries of fash-
ion, film, television, and theater, an increas-
ing number of runway shows, photographic
shoots, and film and theater productions
rely on the specialized skills of the makeup
artist to communicate style and image.

A Modern Phenomenon

When Maurice Levy designed the first retractable lipstick in 1915, no one could have guessed how
popular cosmetics would become or how significant the role of the makeup artist would be in such
emerging new fields as fashion photography and cinema production. Indeed, the concept of "make-
up artist" hardly existed at the time. Until well into the twentieth century, theatrical performers were
expected to do their own makeup, as they were expected to supply their own stage costumes. The pro-
fessional makeup artist, like the theatrical or cinematic costume designer, is a modern phenomenon.
