1 VVaalerija Zukovaa

A collection of etched mirrors 10 x 10 cm, black and
standard (Mixed technique)

Revealing a narrative within stop motion imagery using
photography.

I still fear the dark, but not the night. Because the night are
not as dark as they used to be before. The work should be
aesthetically satisfying and invite the viewer with the
beauty of shape , depth, illusion, light and contrast so I
believe. My work starts with an idea, observation that
evolves in to a spontaneous obsession.

Like stories ,dreams , mystery ,occult, magic, the unknown.
The mirrors reveal a wide known story dark but with a
happy ending perception of which changes with age. I
deconstruct the subjective and present it from an objective
point of view through installation ,sculpture ,photography
and mixed technique.

Isn’t it both great and at the same time hopelessly sad that
many things are not being viewed the same way as before
due to age, experience, perception and various other
factors? Just like the nights, that are not as dark as they
used to be before.

Monotone Prints, Black and White , Collection.

The artwork takes influence from the shapes and
features on the exterior of the Hive. This element of
the building was chosen as the focal point because
of its instantly recognisable complex architectural
structure. The prints are in a minimalistic style to
contrast the aesthetic of the Hive and the grayscale
colour scheme juxtaposes the vast array of loud
colours that are present on and within the Hive
itself. The gestural form also diverges from the
extremely precise and intricate architectural design
that makes the Hive such an aesthetically successful
structure.

Engraved Perspex, Glass

This piece is designed to enhance the surroundings
of the Hive, and show how important they are to the
building itself. I created the piece on Perspex to
reflect how the Hive brings together the community
of Worcester, the university and surrounding
buildings. This piece is made using the cabinet to
symbolise the Hive, in that it supports the work,
making the surroundings part of the work, in the
way that the Hive does with its surroundings.

The hives overall technology was the main influence
for the backing for my work, in relation to the ever
present flow of information from terminals and
screens. The presence of harmony proved to be a
concept I could almost introvert with my use of
corruption and deliberate damaging of virtual art
work. From the gentle transition of the lighting
systems to the silent air circulation system, the
building hums along in harmony, I would like to
infiltrate this system, but with little disruption to the
order of things.

4ft x 4ft illustrated painting.

Watercolour, Pen, Paper.

This piece was influenced by the structural design of
the Hive and its relationship to the city through the
Museum of Royal Worcester. The porcelain museum
is a prominent feature of this work as both the
colour pallet and use of hexagons in this piece relate
to patterns and colours found in both the Hive and
the museum, relating to the original design of the
library. The cube design dissecting the image is an
abstracted representation of the building imitating
the linear formation of the internal staircase.
Environmental benefits of the Hive’s structure are
communicated by the floral pattern beneath the
image.

Photography, Projection, Black and White

Looking into identity, I have chosen to investigate
the different intricate details of each person’s baby-
hairs. Somewhat like a fingerprint, each individual
hair grows in a certain pattern unique to you. Black
and white close ups of people’s hairlines to show a
new form of identity.

Metal Foil, Performance, Sound.

No matter how old we get, we still have childish
desires and impulses, which rise to the surface when
we encounter something that resonates enough
within us. Wanting to jump in a puddle, racing
raindrops down a window or drop something from a
large height. The Atrium ignites this childish desire
with its height and pristine nature; we have a natural
inclination to mess up and destroy. To fill but not
overwhelm this space was the aim, using materials
with historical resonance to the area, the silver foil
casting back to materials used by the Luftwaffe in
breaking up radar communications during WWII. An
evocation of memories and a manifestation of
childish dreams.

5 Emily Clarke

Photography, Projection

These black and white photographs show close-up
portraits of people that highlight the individual and
their hidden talent.

“A photograph portrays the beauty of the person
without judgment”

These pictures are a response to a call out to
members of the public for photographic models,
foregrounding the disability background.

Sculpture, Wood, Glass, Danish Oil

Untitled

This piece is to represent my own interpretation of
The Hive; I wanted to create a piece which includes
different areas of The Hive which pull my focus.
Individually each section of my work pulls from a
different angle of The Hive in a smaller and more
concise form leaving out areas which are of no
interest. As well as this I wanted to include the
history of the site on which the building has been
built upon.

The work has been created by using my own
interpretation of the Hive as a structure and idea. It
includes industrial process to create a solid and
stable structure yet it focuses on the recycled aspect
of the building also.

I have been interested in developing works that
question the defining line between painting and
sculpture, whilst also combining the industrial world
with the fine art one and discovering the boundaries
between functionality and aesthetics. The
physicality of my materials lends itself to the world
of sculpture but how do we define the point where
the work can be called only one or the other,
painting or sculpture?

Videos, Performance, Found Objects, Paper Head.

The introspective has influenced production props that are
used to demonstrate themes of inclusion exclusion trials
and discrimination. “Perspective is on the one hand the
expression of the ‘subjectivity’ of his space, meaning that
man in his space is bound to a particular point of view, that
he can only ever see it ‘from inside’”. Bollnow (1963)

Conjunction
Video 1
This door symbolises much more than its simple
appearance, which is blue, chipped rusty warn weathered
and heavy. I think when I saw the door it symbolised a
passageway or cellar entrance the size and shape reminded
me of stables. What happened to the other half? Ultimately
a door is an entranceway to something.

Park the Bench
Video 2
Thinking about the ‘plight’ of the homeless that live upon
the streets in Britain and the way they are moved on, away
from their home, their place of safety. I made a bench out of
a found pallet, I dragged this much like the door from one

7 NNiiccola Arrnnold

Sculpture, Plaster, Acrylic Paint.

My work is a play on both the architecture of the
Hive interior and the fascinating way the sunlight
filters down through the skylights in the atrium. My
focus is on capturing the ephemeral nature of the
light and articulating it through sculptural reliefs,
using the repeated, regimented pattern of the ash
bars lining the balconies in the Hive. I aim to create
an optical illusion working with the reflection of
colour, inspired by the way beams of light highlight
the colours inside the building where they fall.

Video, Performance

A short film consisting of edited images taken from
Story Island at the Hive library and displayed as a
looped four minute video of static transitions and
scratching sounds. The piece of influenced by
folklore and literature within fairy tales. Dark in
contrast and atmospheric absence. Like looking
through a window to an alternative dimension,
where reality is warped. Creating that ‘corner of
your eye’ effect within the work thus why there are
only brief moments of imagery. It’s the idea of using
colourful raw images and editing them into a
macabre, rustic environment and playing around
with how people interpret these images.

Plaster, Acrylic Paint, Sculpture

Taking photographs and creating paintings have
been two beginning processes that have combined
together in order to create a series of 3 collages that
have been made through the technique of
photocopying previous visuals and manipulating
them into a new abstract composition. The collages
are worked onto MDF with a mixture of photocopied
paper and acrylic paper which has been formed into
a variety of shapes and sizes in order to layer each
element to compose a collage. The outcome has
been created through movement of an ongoing
process with constant development and making.
