“Unite and Work for Progress”

Mission Statement

We believe that each child is capable of learning and that there is a place in life for everyone. Cambridge
High School will attempt to create an atmosphere conducive to learning so that the all-round education of

its students will be realized.

Acknowledgement

Cambridge High School is proud to present to you this year book featuring the 2021 class of school
leavers. We are grateful to all the students and teachers who have contributed to this production.
The quality of educational provision ultimately depends on the teachers; the ones who interpret the

classroom conditions and instill the new values needed to address challenges presented in the
community in which they and their pupils live and work.

As our students enter the world of work, we trust they will reflect on the time spent at Cambridge High
School, realizing that each day provided them with special opportunities to develop physically,
spiritually, intellectually and aesthetically.

Good luck to you all and keep Cambridge High in your hearts always, as we continue to “Unite and Work
for Progress”.

Message from the Principal

The story is poetically told of an oyster that discovered that a grain of

sand was in its shell. Although the grain of sand caused great
discomfort and pain, the oyster opted not to complain nor attribute
blame, but to find the promise within that sand. The story ended, stating
that, after many years when the life of the oyster came to an end, it was
discovered that the small grain of sand was transformed into a priceless
pearl.

This story most aptly speaks to you, the Class of 2021, as you have
suffered the most unfortunate scenario of any group of students in their terminal year of learning. So
unusual and trying were the circumstances that many students “threw in the towel” throughout various
points of the school year. For those students, the challenges, the discomfort, and the pain were too great a
burden for them to continue with, and so they quitted. However, those of you who are reading this
message persevered to the end. You sought to see possibilities where others could only see gloom. Like
the oyster, you can use this unpleasant year to forge a character of independence, reliability, commitment
and determination that will cause others to stop and take notice. It starts with understanding that
complaints and blames are tools only used to keep you in the same position. Every situation has the
capability of breaking your will, or resolving your strength. The outcome is based on your perspective of
the situation. You can either choose to see a learning experience, or you can see the situation you are
placed in as trials that are insurmountable. It is my hope that you will always see the positive lessons.

I have no doubt that as you go you will foster and lead exemplary lives, reflective of the sacrifices made
by your families and the unwavering dedication of your teachers. Remember also, the various nuggets of
wisdom shared by the administrative and ancillary staff. You will always be a part of the family of
Cambridge High School and we will be cheering you on as you slowly reveal to the world the pearl that
you have become.

God bless you.

Bil Keane posited, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today

is a gift from God, which is why we call it the present”.

The natural idea of attending school is to get an education. For some,
acquiring an education might have been quite easy, while for others it is a
herculean feat. Wherever the members of the Valedictory Class of 2021
fall on this quest, note that it is a great achievement to have reached the
end of this period in your life. This period would have seen you lay the
foundation for your future. Whether it was five, or two years you would
have done well and now it is time to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Recognize that you will now be faced with different challenges, but
Cambridge High School has effectively equipped you with knowledge and
skills that will certainly allow you to make the best decisions for your continued development.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction
you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide
where to go” as stated by Dr. Seuss. I am sure you all have your plans and some, if not all of you, can
hardly wait to see these plans through. I want to remind you, valedictorians that the path before you will
not be easy and it will come with hurdles that will seem impassible, but with faith and great courage you
will persevere. Believe in yourself and always put God first. Know that challenges come to test you and to
make you stronger. Do not be afraid. Face your challenges head on. Trust yourself to overcome them, and
remember always, Proverbs 22 verse 4 “By Humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and
life”.
As you now begin your new quest on becoming working class citizens of this country, which we all love, I
ask you to become beacons of light that will shine brightly and allow your good work to be seen so you
will be blessed in abundance. May God continue to enrich you while you enjoy life and live it to its fullest.
Heartiest congratulations!

“Unite and Work for Progress”

Message from the Dean of Discipline

Congratulations graduate students of Cambridge High School. You are now

an official alumni. We are proud of you. To me you will be known as the
class of perseverance. Covid-19 brought so many challenges, and
individually you all had unique challenges that you persevered through.
You lost many of your classmates through various struggles of life during
these times. That’s why this graduation should be one that is to be
remembered and talked about for years to come.

As you embark on a new journey in your life, keep the same focus, drive,
determination, and energy to succeed in any endeavour you choose. Covid-
19 is still here. More importantly, the impacts that it has had on society and
the economy are still here. So you are not leaving here going into a wonderful, prosperous, rosy world;
the struggles are out there and you too will face them. Many have given up, and many more will give up,
but just as you persevered through and achieved excellence at Cambridge High, you can achieve
excellence in life if you continue to persevere.
I want to leave in your memory three things, a scripture, a wise quote, and some good advice.
The scripture: “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings
as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” Isaiah 40:31
The wise quote: “Perseverance is not a long race; it is many short races one after the other.”
Walter Elliot

Some good advice: Always remember the term ‘Self Preservation’. You must take care of yourself before
you can take care of anybody or anything in life. Life is a struggle. Always take time when needed. Take a
step back out of the struggle for a moment to regroup, rethink and relax. Then you can go back into the
struggle.

In conclusion, graduates of 2021, I bid you farewell, but not goodbye. We are always here to provide the
needed support and guidance should you ever have a need. I wish you well and may God bless you on
your journey!

Message from the Dean of Academic Affairs

As the 2020 to 2021 Academic Year comes to a close, I must use this opportunity

to congratulate this exceptional batch of school leavers who have persevered
against all odds. You have indeed excelled despite this ravaging pandemic. You
understood quickly the huge sacrifices needed to ensure your success and you
rose to the occasion. You never allowed your situation to define you, but instead
you defined it, by constantly pursuing new ways to conquer it. I implore you to
take with you at least one lesson from this pandemic, as is stated by Nelson
Mandela, “It always seems impossible until it’s done”. You witnessed firsthand
how incredibly difficult this pandemic has made your educational journey but it
did not defeat you. Let this be your guide in whatever situations you will find
yourselves in the future.

To the hardworking superheroes we call teachers, you donned your capes every morning to ensure the
continuity of education. I salute you. Your efforts and commitment to duty are immeasurable and have
not gone unnoticed. I am left with the renewed hope that the rebuilding of our education system is in
good hands. The well being of your students has been at the core of every decision concerning teaching
and learning. You have adjusted your sails to match the ever changing winds that blow. As you continue
to navigate these waters, may you always remember the three Gs; God: allow him to be the Captain of
your fleet. Gratitude: in everything give thanks. Growth: never allow anyone, or anything to stifle your
purpose and potential.

To the administrative and ancillary staff you have indeed provided the institution with the necessary
support that was needed so that all the parts worked in tandem. You braved the weather daily to ensure
that all the departments were facilitated with the necessary tools and conditions under which to work. I
salute your efforts and look forward to working with you in the coming academic year.

I leave with you the words of the great Nelson Mandela, “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and
achieve success if they are dedicated to, and passionate about what they do.”

Message from the Grade 11 Coordinator

“The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it
away from you”.

This quotation from B.B. King validates the profound statement
which affirms that, ‘Education is a long term investment. The time
and money put in, the courage you have to move through the
challenges and persevered will all keep paying off for the rest of
your life.”

This academic year has been deemed by many, as one of the most
challenging and unpredictable year for the education sector. There
were so many moments of frustration and disappointment, and
many students found it hard to keep up. Consequently, some
eventually fell by the way. I would like to congratulate those
students who were determined to make it to the end. Thank God,
you never gave up. Here you are today, Class of 2021. Congratulations! You can now be called graduates.
Your investments will definitely be worth it. You have made it, in spite of the tremendous stress that you
experienced during this most challenging year of your tenure at this noble institution. Now the
opportunity is yours to embrace adversities and allow the fire of life to burn away the negatives and
refine you as pure gold. Undoubtedly, the new experiences and additional knowledge you gained in the
use of technology will help to broaden your understanding and ease you into the path you are about to
take. Use these tough experiences as life’s lessons.

Class of 2021, I will remind you that hurdles in life come in many forms. Covid 19 was your hurdle, but
you cleared it in your quest to overcome all the obstacles it presented. The many times you fell asleep at
the computer, the many times your connection was disrupted in the middle of your class and the times
that you had no phone credit or data to attend classes were all hurdles that you overcame on your way to
achieving success, and being a part of the Cambridge High School’s graduating class of 2021. These
setbacks have made you strong and certainly will continue to strengthen you.

As you enter this new chapter, do not take life for granted. Make the best of every opportunity that comes
your way. I want to encourage you to take everything that Cambridge High School, life and the world has

“Unite and Work for Progress”

taught you and go forth. Take it as a launching pad. Classes of 2021, now take your flight. Go with God,
and make this world a better place; for me and for you and the entire human race. I wish you well.
I take this opportunity to say thanks to the teachers of Grade 11 who worked tirelessly through the
pandemic to ensure the graduates reached this significant milestone. Colleagues, please accept sincere
gratitude for embracing the ‘new normal’, as you went above and beyond to ensure that the students
stayed on course. I salute you. Keep up the good work. May God continue to bless you.

Message from the Head Boy

What a year it has been! During our final months at this
prestigious institution we have come to value the hard and
commendable work that has been put in by our principal,
teachers and other members of staff. If it was not for your
dedication, this year would have been even more stressful than it
was. Please note that your work and support have not gone
unnoticed.

Undoubtedly, the journey over the past five years was not easy, and along the way a few of my peers have
fallen off. However, those of us who have withstood the moments of frustration, doubt and tears are now
celebrating our resolve and ultimate success. I personally, extend hearty congratulations to you and
encourage you to continue to hold strong, as the journey to self accomplishment is only beginning. I wish
for you great success as you chart your way into the world, as there is nothing more beautiful and
energizing than finding your course as you bob along with the tide and currents. Always remember that
your path is yours, and as such defines your character as you go along. I charge you to now go forth and
conquer your dreams, fears and ultimately the world.

“Unite and Work for Progress”

Message from the Head Girl

Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me.”

It is with great joy and delight that I pen this
message to you my fellow graduates of
Cambridge High School’s batch of 2021. In view
of the scripture above, life is filled with multiple
challenges, but with determination and
perseverance we not only can confront them, but
we can overcome them and win the battle.
Throughout our tenure at Cambridge High
school, there were multiple lessons learnt and
numerous positive traits acquired. One such trait
is working in unity, as our school’s motto states,
“Unite and Work for Progress”. We all
encountered some bumps here and there
throughout our tenure. Some had us thinking the
sun would not shine again after the bleakness,
but learning to lean on the words from our
motto, we were encouraged to keep pushing
towards the finish line, and uplifting each other
in the process.

We have just completed a phase of the journey to
success. Let us remember success is not a
destination but a journey. There are times when
we may feel as though success is impossible,
especially in this time where the pandemic is
raging. We may even feel as though we have no
chance of succeeding. Each time such a thought
comes to mind, remember this inspiring quote
from Jonathon Silver Scott “It takes many
failures for the success to taste sweeter.” If
there is a point where failure overcomes you
never let it defeat you, instead, use it as a means

“Unite and Work for Progress”

Message from the Deputy Head Boy

We are now completing the school year 2020-2021 and without a

doubt, I can say that it has been a rough year, especially as it

relates to education and learning. The Corona Virus has taken a

drastic toll on everyone, and the students of Cambridge High

School were not spared. It has hindered a lot of our plans, causing

setbacks in our learning, and resulting in some students

becoming uncomfortable about attending physical classes when

the opportunity was proposed. However, through all this we

need to remember that we are courageous students and despite all our challenges we need to hold our

heads high; push through and never give up. Our learning journey at Cambridge High school started out

well, but the process was challenging and at times downright rough. Along the way some of us had bouts

of laughter, while others often shed tears. I sometimes felt emotions of despair and fear. In some

moments I felt like my goal was achievable. Then, there were times where feelings of defeat were

paramount. Despite all that, here I am at the end having learnt that endurance is an important key to

success. I implore you all to strive for excellence even when it seems impossible. No one knows

everything, so ask away. One Bible scripture says, “Ask and it shall be given. Seek and you will find. Knock

and it will be opened onto you.” I was here to learn, and along the way I realized learning includes all the

listed actions. In all I do I placed God at the forefront, having faith and patience that he will do what he

said he would. Every path ever paved began with one step. Take that step even in fear, for in due season

you will reap the reward of your labour. Always remember you can talk with God about anything without

shame, for he understands your heart.

Finally, Class of 2021 I say to you, never allow your situation to define your outcome negatively, it’s

yours! You are not confined by your current state. Allow it to build and position you for greater things. As

you go, keep this scripture in mind always, “I can do all things through Christ strengthens me” and

remember to stay safe and positive. Robert Taylor

“Unite and Work for Progress”

Message from the Deputy Head Girl

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance,

learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what
you are doing.

I must commend the members of the Magazine
Committee who have worked tirelessly to ensure this
magazine is a success. I am grateful for the privilege to
share with you in the publication of our 2021 edition.

Entering the gates of Cambridge High School in the year
2016, I must say I have acquired lifelong and lasting
attributes which have mould my character, and I am
sure will continue to impact my goals. As Deputy Head
Girl of Cambridge High School my job came with many
responsibilities. Though challenging at times, my
position has proven to be equally rewarding. I consider
my role as Deputy Head Girl, a distinct honour and truly
an unforgettable experience. For my junior peer who
will assume this role, I encourage you to wear your
badge with pride, and to remember that the best way to
lead is by example. As Anatole France said “To
accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also
dream, not only plan, but to also believe”.

I have enjoyed my stay here at Cambridge High School
and have gained something worthwhile from being here. I have been given the opportunity to pave the
way to a bright future. Even though the global pandemic has reduced our school experiences to mere
online interaction and might potentially cut our dreams of tossing our hats and getting the last goodbyes
from our teachers, we are still grateful for all that we were able to achieve over the last nine months.

To the class of 2021, I say to you, as you go forward in your life be ready for whatever the world throws
at you and keep going, because contrary to what the world keeps trying to tell you, life is a learning curve,
not a test. Spend however much time you need figuring out what you really want. Have confidence in
yourself and what you do. Don’t let anyone tell you what goals are realistic and unrealistic. You are the
one that determines your goals and self-worth. Nobody can get in your way, unless you let them. So keep

“Unite and Work for Progress”

your head up high and remain focused on your goals. Always remember the harder you work for
something there is a greater chance of achieving it. You are unstoppable not because you did not have
failures or doubts but because you continued despite them.”
Lastly, I want to say thank you to every teacher that has motivated us. To the teachers who never gave up
on us, but instead worked exceptionally hard with us and believed that we could accomplish anything we
wanted as long as we put our mind to it. Most of all, a big hearty thank you to our parents for all the
sacrifices they made for us so we could achieve much. Acknowledgement must be made of the ancillary
staff and the tremendous effort they made daily to ensure that we had a clean, safe and healthy
environment in which to learn.

Traceyann Ainsley The women of the Victorian era were
expected to dress in black mourning clothes
“Unite and Work for Progress” for two years after their husbands’ deaths,
and that started the tradition of wearing
black at funerals in the West.
For over 7,000 years, cotton fabric was used
for clothing. For one bale of cotton, 215 pairs
of jeans can be made. The word “jeans”
came from the cotton pants worn by the
“Genes,” a local term used to describe
sailors from Genoa.
During the late 1800s, people wore shoes
with rubber soles called plimsolls, but they
were crude. The US Rubber Company came
up with more comfortable rubber shoes with
canvas tops during 1892 and called it Keds.
The shoes were named sneakers because
the soles were so smooth that they allow the
wearer to sneak around silently. By 1917,

the sneakers began to be mass-produced
