Course Description:
This proficiency-based 4-credit course continues to develop communicative abilities in speaking,
listening, reading, and writing in culturally authentic contexts. Activities are conducted in Japanese.
Prerequisites:
JPS 102 or by placement test. If you have already successfully completed JPS 201, JPS 202, or
higher, you will not receive credit for this course, JPS 201.

Learning Objectives: After taking this course, students will be able to
1. a. Listening: understand short utterances on familiar topics and detect the main idea
in familiar material.
b. Speaking: produce short utterances on familiar topics and recite learned material.
c. Reading: read simple and short reading material.
d. Writing: write short memos and letters somewhat comfortably.
2. To acquire sufficient knowledge of Japanese grammar for carrying out the above
functions.
3. To acquire general knowledge of the Japanese people and their culture.

Attendance:
Attendance in classes is expected in all courses at Syracuse University.If a student is unable to
participate in-person or virtually for an extended period of time (48 hours or more), the student
may request an absence notification from their home school/college Dean’s Office or the Dean of
Students Office. Instructors will be notified via the “Absence Notification” flag in Orange Success.
Barnes Center at the Arch (Health, Counseling, etc.) staff will not provide medical excuse notes
for students. When Barnes Center staff determine it is medically necessary to remove a student
from classes, they will coordinate with the Dean of Students Office case management staff to
provide appropriate notification to faculty through Orange Success. For absences lasting less
than 48 hours, students are encouraged to discuss academic arrangements directly with their
faculty.

Food and Drink in the Classroom:
Eating and drinking require the lowering of the face mask, creating a potentially dangerous
situation. For this reason, students are not allowed to eat or drink in class during the COVID-19
pandemic.
Use of Class Materials and Recordings:
Original class materials (handouts, assignments, tests, etc.) and recordings of class sessions are
the intellectual property of the course instructor. You may download these materials for your use
in this class. However, you may not provide these materials to other parties (e.g., web sites,
social media, other students) without permission. Doing so is a violation of intellectual property
law and of the student code of conduct.
Academic Integrity
Syracuse University’s Academic Integrity Policy reflects the high value that we, as a university
community, place on honesty in academic work. The policy holds students accountable for the
integrity of all work they submit and for upholding course-specific, as well as university-wide,
academic integrity expectations. The policy governs citation and use of sources, the integrity of
work submitted in exams and assignments, and truthfulness in all academic matters, including
course attendance and participation. The policy also prohibits students from: 1) submitting the
same work in more than one class without receiving advance written authorization from both
instructors and, 2) using websites that charge fees or require uploading of course materials to
obtain exam solutions or assignments completed by others and present the work as their own.
Under the policy, instructors who seek to penalize a student for a suspected violation must first
report the violation to the Center for Learning and Student Success (CLASS). Students may not
drop or withdraw from courses in which they face a suspected violation. Instructors must wait to
assign a final course grade until a suspected violation is reviewed and upheld or overturned.
Upholding Academic Integrity includes abiding by instructors’ individual course expectations,
which may include the protection of their intellectual property. Students should not upload,
distribute, or otherwise share instructors’ course materials without permission. Students found in
violation of the policy are subject to grade sanctions determined by the course instructor and non-
grade sanctions determined by the School or College where the course is offered, as described in
the Violation and Sanction Classification Rubric. Students are required to read an online
summary of the University’s academic integrity expectations and provide an electronic signature
agreeing to abide by them twice a year during pre-term check-in on MySlice.

Note that some students may be accompanied to classes by a service animal. Students are not
required to provide prior notice of this to the University. If it is not readily apparent that the student
is disabled, students can be asked two questions, do you have this animal due to a disability and
what tasks does it perform for you? Emotional Support Animals are different than services
animals and are typically only approved to reside in a student’s housing location/room.

seek to keep information you share with me private to the greatest extent possible, but as a
professor I have mandatory reporting responsibilities to share information regarding sexual

Faith Tradition Observances:
Syracuse University’s Religious Observances Policy recognizes the diversity of faiths represented
in the campus community and protects the rights of students, faculty, and staff to observe
religious holy days according to their traditions. Under the policy, students should have an
opportunity to make up any examination, study, or work requirements that may be missed due to
a religious observance provided they notify their instructors no later than the end of the second
week of classes for regular session classes and by the submission deadline for flexibility
formatted classes. Student deadlines are posted in MySlice under
StudentServices/Enrollment/My Religious Observances/Add a Notification.
TRIGGER WARNING
Because of the nature of the topics covered in this class, the course readings or class
discussions may generate intellectual and emotional discomfort. These responses are natural
parts of intellectual growth. If, however, your emotional response becomes acute psychological
distress (triggering), please communicate with me. I invite you to contact me if you have concerns
in this regard.
Course Specific Policies:
Assignments:
1. Assignments, mainly Student Activity Manual(SAM), are assigned on a regular basis,
and submitted by beginning of the next class day. No late submission will be
accepted.
2. The student has a week from returned date to improve his/her grade (grammatical
mistakes only, excluding misspell, Kanji and conjugations mistakes). Each assignment
may be re-submitted only ONCE.
Others:
1. Come to class ON TIME. If the student is tardy 3 times(i.e., come to class 5 minutes
or more after the class time), he/she will be counted absent once. Each student is
allowed 4 absences for the entire semester to cover emergencies, minor illness and
personal needs. When students miss a class for any reason, it's their responsibility to
obtain all the information necessary to catch up with the class.
2. Turn off unnecessary electronic devices and put them away before class begins.
3. No make-up quizzes and exams will be given, unless the student has a legitimate
reason and has notified the instructor beforehand, or shows an official document. This
includes when students arrive late in a class.
4. Active participation is required in all classes: Students must accept working
cooperatively with a variety of other members of the class in groups and pairs.
The general guidelines of class participation are:
A The student is WELL PREPARED* for class, is actively involved in all
class activities, uses the Japanese language CREATIVELY and
INTELLIGENTLY;
B The student is partially prepared for class, sometimes is unable to
participate successfully;
C/D The student is present but does not actively participate;
F The student is absent,
--- The student's behavior impedes the learning of the other students.
5. *Well prepared means the student has 1). READ the grammar explanation, 2). READ,
LISTENED TO and PRACTICED the audio script of the dialogues, and 3). REVIEW
vocabulary and Kanji periodically.
6. Check Blackboard daily for any change in course work and new announcements.
7. Bring Attendance sheet everyday, and keep ALL graded work for own proof.
Plagiarism
All work turned in for this class should be done by you and you alone. While you may receive
help from acquaintances with single words or short phrases, copying full sentences, passages, or
complete texts from other sources and claiming them as your own, or using electronic
translators to convert your work into Japanese is considered cheating. Anyone engaging in
such activities will receive a 0 for the work in question and will be reported to the University’s
Academic Integrity Office for disciplinary action. A second occurrence will result in the student’s
receiving a failing grade for the course and potential disciplinary action by the university.
