11th Episcopal District Evangelism Seminar

11th District Evangelism Seminar update 2

GREETINGS

Greetings in the majestic name of Jesus our Christ and Lord,

The prophetic words of Jeremiah assures us that God thinks
about the difficulties that his people face in returning to
their familiar place of worship after catastrophic events in
life. “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,
says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give
you a future and a hope.” We can be assured that God
knows the challenges we have faced in this pandemic
crisis, and He still has a plan for us and our ministries of

love. We are hopeful that this seminar will share some words of intellect,
instruction and inspiration to prepare you to move beyond the limitations
of the pandemic crisis in ministry and Christian living.

We are thankful to every person who was involved in this sharing moment.
A special thanks goes out to each program participant and especially to
Bishop Adam J. Richardson, Presiding Prelate of the 11th Episcopal District
and our Moderator, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, Presiding Prelate of

we release the blessedness of God’s presence into your lives and your
families.

Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie serves as the 117th elected and

time in the over 200-year history of the AME Church, a woman had
obtained the level of Episcopal office. The firsts continue as she
served as the President of the Council of Bishops, Chair of the
General Conference Commission and was the Host Bishop for the
49th Session of the General Conference of the AME Church in June
2012 with more than 30,000 in attendance.

Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th

Board of Trustees of the International Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

President’s Advisory Council of the White House Faith-Based and Neighborhood
Partnerships. She recently was invited to preach at the annual White House Easter Prayer
Breakfast at the invitation of President Obama.

Bishop McKenzie is the author of five books. The first two, Not Without A Struggle and
Strength in the Struggle concern leadership and professional growth for women. Journey to
the Well helps women seek new directions for personal growth and transformation following
the footsteps of the Biblical Samaritan woman. Her book, Swapping Housewives, tells the
stories of Rachel, Jacob and Leah and shares the 21st century implications for married and
unmarried love. A revised updated version of Not Without A Struggle was released in 2012.
In 2013 her newest book Those Sisters Can Preach! was released. It includes 22 sermons as
pearls of wisdom from nationally known preachers who happen to be women.

Bishop McKenzie, well known as an electrifying preacher, has been honored for her
leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by a number of diverse civic,
educational, business, and governmental organizations and leaders. She was named this year
by Huffington Post as one of the 50 most powerful women religious leaders in the world.

Rev. Francine A. Nelson Brookins, Esq.
Panelist

Candidate for Episcopal Service in the African Methodist
Episcopal Church, Church Builder, Attorney, Mediator,
Judge, Loving Pastor & Teacher

The Rev. Francine Angelique (Nelson) Brookins, Esq. is the
Pastor of Bethel AME Church Fontana, located in Fontana,
California. The motto at Beth-El is “BREATHE. PRAISE.
SERVE.” Psalm 150:6. Francine is a candidate for Episcopal
Service in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 2020.

Born in Los Angeles, California in 1971 to Carole Nelson
and Hamel Hartford Brookins, Francine was ‘born and
raised’ in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Political

pressures on her unmarried clergy parents afforded her an
unconventional and distinctive lens on the church. The tireless efforts of both parents
instilled in Francine a sense of the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s value and
importance in the lives of people everywhere. As a child, Francine was active in the
Y.P.D., sang in the choir, served on the youth usher and stewardess boards, and was often
found in church praying or sharing words of life at someone’s event.

Francine attended schools that taught her to think critically and question everything. She
began her early education in the public schools of Berkeley and San Francisco,
California. In 1989 she graduated from Mercy High School, an all-girls Catholic High
School in San Francisco, California. In 1993 she earned her B.A. from Georgetown
University in Washington, D.C., the oldest Jesuit and Catholic University in the United
States. In 1996 she earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from The George Washington National
Law Center in Washington D.C. After completing law school, Francine returned home to
take and pass the California Bar exam on her very first attempt. She was admitted to
practice law in the State of California and the Federal Courts in November 1996 and
began practicing law immediately thereafter. Her attentions were focused on civil rights
matters affecting the poor and disenfranchised. From 1997 until 2009 she was a grader of
California Bar exams for the State Bar of California. In 1998 Francine answered her Call
to ordained ministry and received her license to preach within the African Methodist
Episcopal church. In 2002 she earned a Masters of Divinity (M.Div.) from the Pacific
School of Religion (PSR) in Berkeley, California, a multi-denominational Christian
seminary that has been on the cutting edge of emerging movements for change in the
Christian tradition since its founding in 1866.

Francine was ordained an Itinerant Elder in the California Annual Conference of the 5th
Episcopal District of the AME church in 2002. She served as the Conference Coordinator
of Women in Ministry (WIM), a member of the Board of Examiners, and as the Director
of Social Action for the California Conference. Since 2008, she has served the
Connectional A.M.E. Church as a member of the Judicial Council, and as the 2nd Vice
President for AME Women In Ministry.

In 2005, the Rt. Rev. John R. Bryant appointed Francine as the Pastor of Wright Chapel
AME Church in San Francisco, California where she served for four years. In 2009 the
Rt. Rev. T. Larry Kirkland appointed her to serve as the Pastor of Bethel AME Church
Fontana. When she arrived in Fontana, California, she was greeted by a faithful
congregation whose church building had been torn down by the City of Fontana for a
road expansion and a sewer improvement project. Services were being held in shared
space at a neighboring place of worship.

Francine led the congregation in a major and successful effort of building a new and
modern Bethel AME Fontana Church edifice on the site of the original church property.
Under her leadership the congregation commenced and completed the application,
permitting and construction process in less than two years. On Christmas 2010 Bethel
AME Fontana held its first worship service in the new building. The church property was
dedicated for use in the AME Church on January 8, 2011, making Bethel Fontana the
newest AME church structure in all of California. Not only has the physical building of
Beth-El been erected, but under Francine’s leadership, the hearts and minds and numbers
in the congregation have continued to grow in discipleship of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
The people know that as the body of Christ, they are the building that matters most when
it comes to building the Kindom of God.

As a leader Francine is truthful, teachable, and trustworthy. In May of 2012 the great
Bishop H. H. Brookins went to receive his heavenly reward, leaving with us a gift in his
daughter, Pastor Francine Angelique Nelson Brookins, Esq. Yet, Francine does not serve
in anyone’s shadow. She is a servant of God who is quite comfortable in her shoes. She
has proven to be faithful to the cause, dedicated to the work of the Lord, caring for all of
humankind and a most dynamic, encouraging and powerful preacher and teacher. She is a
true inspiration to women of all ages, both in and out of the AME organization; and a real
blessing to people who have the pleasure of sharing in her teaching and leadership.

This is the current witness of the Rev. Francine Angelique Nelson Brookins, Esq.: “The
God of Sarai and Sarah, of Saul and Paul, of Elijah and of the woman with the lost coin is
real, alive and active! Jesus Christ of Nazareth, Mary and Joseph’s baby, is truly the Son
of God who came to save it and not to condemn it. People working together with the love
of Christ in their hearts and the fire of the Holy Spirit creating community among them
can do anything. The gates of hell will not prevail against the true church. Together we
will do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God.”

Please, grab your shoes, take my hand, and walk with me to Orlando in 2020. Vote #403 for Bishop

Rev. Marvin Clyde Zanders II
Panelist

Marvin Clyde Zanders, II is the anointed, charismatic,
energetic, and innovative Pastor of Saint Paul African
Methodist Episcopal Church of Jacksonville, Florida. This
man of God has been used by the Spirit of the Lord to teach,
touch, and transform lives for the Kingdom of God. He is the
offspring of the late Marvin C. Zanders, Sr. and Mrs.
Jacquelyn Johnson Bain. A native of Orlando, Florida, he
attended the public schools of Orange County, finishing

from Edgewater High School. He received his academic
preparation from Morehouse College and The
Interdenominational Theological Center, both in Atlanta,
Georgia.

Having a strong anointing for leadership development,
evangelism, and stewardship development, has enabled Pastor Zanders to take the
congregations he has served to new levels in God.

The Greater Payne Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Jacksonville, Florida,
under Zanders’ pastoral leadership, experienced a move of God that resulted in an
increase in church membership and the construction of the Marvin C. Zanders
Community Enrichment Center to support the many outreach ministries that were a
blessing to the people of God. Zanders served that congregation for eight years and then
was assigned to Mount Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church in Orlando, Florida.
During his five years of leadership, the Mount Olive congregation experienced
phenomenal church growth as well as burning a $350,000.00 church mortgage within his
first year of leadership to the congregation.

Pastor Zanders is now on assignment at Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church
of Jacksonville, Florida. Since his appointment there on November 18, 2000, the ministry
has experienced much growth and development for the good of God’s people. A strong
emphasis on prayer and stewardship enabled the congregation to liquidate a $2.5 million
dollar mortgage three years ahead of time. He also teaches the congregation that they are
blessed to be a blessing. The fruit of that teaching is evident in the strong community
outreach ministries of the church that include; summer camps, community forums, health
symposiums, radio broadcasts, and other opportunities for “Sharing Christ and Meeting
Needs”.

This faithful servant of the Lord also exercises his leadership abilities by serving within
the African Methodist Episcopal Church and the Jacksonville community. He is a
member of the Executive Committee of the General Board of the African Methodist
Episcopal Church. He has served as the Advisor to the Chairman and the 1st Vice
Chairman of the Episcopal Committee of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. He is
the Treasurer for the Eleventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal
Church.

He is the Co-Organizer of the Clay County Minority Coalition as well as a Board
Member for the Duval County Partners for Education. He is also an active member of the
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, a 32° Mason PHA – Champion Lodge #2 and
Tillman Valentine Consistory #22.

This servant of God is married to Mrs. Winifred Houston Zanders. They are the parents
of Marvin Frank Curtis Zanders and Micah Van Zanders.

Pastor Zanders is a CANDIDATE FOR THE OFFICE OF BISHOP in the African
Methodist Episcopal Church in July 2020 at The 51st Quadrennial Session of the General
Conference in Orlando, Florida.

As you prepare to be blessed by God through His vessel, remember that God can
Empower, Enable and Equip all who have faith in Him. As God sits on high and a new
day begins with the rising sun, trust these words in your heart, “The Best Is Yet To
Come.”

The Reverend Conitras M. Houston
Panelist

A true woman of God, the Reverend Conitras M. Houston strives for
excellence in ministry through the Word of God, the Work of God,
and the Will of God. She sincerely loves God and God’s people;
therefore, she professes boldly the words of 1 Corinthians 2:9 “…no
eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has
prepared for those who love Him”!

Pastor “C” as she is affectionately called, is the daughter of Bonita
Houston and Harold Houston, Jr. and is the proud beloved sister of
Harold III and Brian.

In May of 2002, Pastor “C” accepted the call into the ministry and was
subsequently admitted for training under the African Methodist Episcopal Church’s Board of
Examiners. She delivered her initial sermon and was licensed to preach in December of 2002.
Bishop William P. DeVeaux ordained Pastor “C” as an Itinerant Deacon in May of 2005 and an
Itinerant Elder in May of 2008, both at the Atlanta North Georgia Annual Conference.

Just shy of her ordination as an Itinerant Deacon, Pastor “C” graduated from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interpersonal & Organizational
Communications with a minor in Spanish. While a student at UNC, Pastor “C” constantly
pursued excellence in ministry and academia. To pursue her fluency in Spanish, she studied in
Seville, Spain throughout the summer of 2004.

With all of her many campus obligations, Pastor “C” never took her focus off the work God has
called her to do. In September of 2003, God gave Pastor “C” the vision to start a Bible Study
based ministry, which she named “Saturdays In Christ.” "Saturdays In Christ" was an officially
recognized campus organization on the campus of UNC- Chapel Hill with “Expansions” that
included a Mime & Dance Ministry, a Spoken Word Ministry, as well as a Praise & Worship
Team.

When Pastor “C,” returned to Atlanta, GA in 2005, she quickly expanded her work of “Saturdays
In Christ” into an annual performing arts conference known as “Spirit Movers for Christ”. It is
through “Spirit Movers for Christ” that Pastor “C” shared her passion for mime, dance, and drama
with over 100 children over the course of five days and concluded the intense week with a gospel
stage production. Pastor “C” now hosts “Spirit Movers for Christ” in three different cities within
the state of Georgia. In 2014, she and the Spirit Movers team were invited to expand their reach
to the state of Arizona. Pastor “C” believes that music opens the hearts of young people and
inspires them to be who they are truly created to be—Spirit Movers for Christ is one of the vessels
God has equipped her to use to impact our world.

In February 2007, Pastor “C” was the youngest among only twelve recipients of Delta Sigma
Theta’s Pinnacle Leadership Award. This prestigious award is presented by their Fortitude
Educational and Cultural Development Foundation to honor, recognize, and celebrate local
African-American women who make contributions to society and impact the lives of others—
women who have achieved success in a chosen field and who personify the highest standards of
service, leadership, and character. She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

In May of 2008, Pastor “C” completed her studies at Emory University’s Candler School of
Theology earning a Master of Divinity Degree. During her time at Candler, Pastor “C” continued
to strive towards excellence by being among only six students to be admitted into the Master of
Divinity Thesis Program. She was also afforded the honor of preaching in one of the Fall 2007
Chapel services with an audience of faculty, staff, and students from the entire Emory University
community.

Pastor “C” also believes in being a vital resource to her surrounding community. For this reason,
she introduced Gabriel’s House, Inc. to the community of Fairburn, GA in the Fall of 2008.
Gabriel’s House serves as a youth center and preserving agent for the entire community—
instilling values of self-worth through performing arts, life skills training, and academic
enrichment.

Pastor “C” is grateful for the opportunities that she has been given to serve the Lord’s people.
After humbly serving as the Youth Pastor and Assistant Pastor of St. John A.M.E. Church in
Fairburn, GA for five years, Pastor “C” served as the Pastor of St. Luke A.M.E. Church in Athens,
GA until April 2011. In May of 2012, she was appointed as the Senior Pastor of the Greater
Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Columbus, GA. Under her leadership, Greater Ward Chapel has
grown tremendously in membership, as well as ministry. The sanctuary and other areas of the
facility were renovated debt-free, a community development center serving school-aged children
was initiated, the surrounding community was served, and much more.

In October 2016, after faithfully serving over four years in Columbus, GA, Bishop Reginald T.
Jackson appointed Pastor “C” as the first female and 38th pastor of Trinity A.M.E Church in
Atlanta, GA where she now serves as the Board Chair of a Quality-Rated Early Learning Center
and a vibrant growing congregation. Already, the congregation is increasing in membership and
ministry with Pastor “C” as an enthusiastic and spiritually grounded leader. Pastor “C” is truly
passionate about the work of God has sent her to do – not only at Trinity but also around the entire
world. For this reason, Pastor “C” continues to travel preaching and teaching the Good News
while mentoring and encouraging Christians of all ages within the United States and abroad.

Pastor “C” also serves as the Finance Chair of the Sixth Episcopal District (entire state of Georgia)
of the A.M.E. Church and is a 2019 graduate of Leadership Georgia—the state’s oldest and most
successful leadership organization.

Beyond all of the technical information, the Reverend Conitras M. Houston loves the Lord. Since
childhood, she has always pursued a walk with Christ. Pastor “C” is known for the following
quote: “Since God is a God of excellence, God’s children SHALL excel!”
