WELCOME TO

INDIAN
RIVER
COUNTY

Situated on Florida’s east coast, Indian River County has a friendly, unpretentious
atmosphere. Centrally located 70 miles south of the Kennedy Space Center and 135 miles
north of Miami, our 543 square miles contain beautiful beaches, groves of renowned Indian
River citrus, immaculate oceanfront estates, and riverfront communities.
This unique setting, combined with a burgeoning retail and tourism industry, plus a dynamic
business community, continues to attract national and international attention.
8 2021 WHO’S WHO IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY BUSINESS / INDIANRIVERCHAMBER.COM

Approximately 155,000 people reside in Indian River County, enjoying a
climate moderated by the warm tropical waters of the Gulf Stream. Balmy
winters combine with the summer’s fresh ocean breezes to keep the average
temperature a delicious 74 degrees, allowing residents to swim, golf, and play
tennis all year long. In addition, the 26 miles of unspoiled beaches, the serene waterscapes
of the Sebastian and Indian Rivers, and miles of pristine woodlands and fields provide an
endless array of recreational adventures. Free from urban sprawl and congestion, Indian
River County offers the ideal setting for living life to its fullest.

While agriculture and tourism play an essential role in our economy, there is an increasing
number of firms in the health care and information technology industries, along with light
manufacturing and service sector jobs. Relatively low labor costs, inexpensive building sites,
and the absence of state income tax continue to attract industry. Our workforce of semi-skilled
and trained technical workers points to a community that is productive and business-friendly.

Quality education is an essential factor in measuring a community’s commitment. The
Indian River County public school system gets high marks for utilizing innovative
curriculums along with traditional teaching methods and exciting multimedia capabilities
to challenge and stimulate students’ imaginations.

ABOUT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

On the evening of March 10, 1922, a group of individuals met in the Vero Beach City
Council chambers to establish the Chamber of Commerce. According to newspaper
stories written for the Vero Press, in September of that same year, thirty Chamber
members gathered for dinner to mark the first six-month anniversary of the Chamber. Following
dinner and cigars, the group began their plans for the first publicity piece to promote our area.

Today, we continue to promote our area to businesses, visitors, and retirees. We provide our members
and the community with valuable and timely information and services to keep our county competitive.

The Chamber’s success symbolizes how volunteer efforts can make a difference and enhance a
community. It is a credit to our many dedicated Chamber leaders and volunteers who help implement our
programs through their work on Chamber committees and task forces. Our thanks to the hundreds
of businesses that comprise our membership. It could not be done without you!

The Florida State University College of Medicine, created in 2000 to produce “compassionate physicians for the 21st century,” is the first new medical
school of the century to be reaccredited. It offers an M.D. degree; a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences; and the M.S. in Biomedical Sciences, Bridge to Clinical
Medicine Major. The College of Medicine’s mission emphasizes patient-centered health care and service to elder, rural, minority and underserved
populations.

FSU medical students spend their first two years at the main campus in Tallahassee. Fort Pierce is one of six Florida cities that host a regional campus,
where students spend years 3 and 4. (The other regional campuses are in Daytona Beach, Orlando, Pensacola and Sarasota as well as Tallahassee.)
There also are rural training sites in Marianna and Immokalee, in addition to Thomasville, Ga.

Rather than learning in an academic medical center, students learn one-on-one from community physicians in their offices, clinics, and other outpatient
settings as well as in hospitals. The Fort Pierce Regional Campus partners with several Treasure Coast healthcare institutions and over 240 local
physicians to provide clinical training to students.
