2017 JCI MAURITIUS PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE

Dear JCI Beau–Bassin/ Rose-Hill Members,

Greetings

We have already reached halfway of our one year to lead.
Time to sit back and see our achievements of the first six
months, evaluate and focus on our priorities.

Often we see that we can have promising plan of action and
it‟s only when we step in the journey that we realise the
feasibility of same, however by being guided by our mission
vision we continue to create impact. Each local organization
has its unique assets and I wish JCI Beau- Bassin/ Rose –
Hill all the very best for the remaining months and looking
forward for growth of the organization, impactful project and a
great JCI Mauritius National Convention.

Life is about balancing priorities, as goes the saying by Qui –
Gon Jinn:

“Your focus determines your reality,,,”

So Stay focused and let‟s continue to Impact As One.

2017 LOCAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear readers,
View Print Exit

Greetings from JCI Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill!

It is with immense honour to address you all in this second edition
of our newsletter. First of all I would like to congratulate the
hardworking team who have made this newsletter a success, so I
would like to thank the chief editor Avina Uckiah and our
hardworking designer Jiovanni Juliette who has put much effort
into it . As you will all notice our newsletter has undergone major
changes and together with everyone here we have decided to
name it Zen Actif. Why Zen Actif? It was one of our successful
projects in the past which aimed at helping the community. Zen
Actif also represents us all, the youth, the „‟actif‟‟ who are actively
serving our community.

This first six months have been a very hectic with all our projects
taking shape and seeing our members being empowered. We are
halfway through 2017 and maybe we should seize this
opportunity and ask ourselves, are we on the right track? If we are
moving away from our objectives right now is the moment for us
to adjust our sails and get back onto the right direction. We have
so much work left but as goes the famous quote:

“Alone we can do so little, together we can achieve so much
more‟‟
On this note, I would like to wish you all a happy reading.

EDITOR IN CHIEF’S MESSAGE
Dear Readers,

It is with immense pleasure that we are bringing to you the
Second Edition of the JCI Beau-Bassin/Rose-Hill Newsletter
for the year 2017.

As you would have noticed, we decided from this edition
onwards to rebrand our newsletter „Zen Actif‟ and to revamp
it in general with a peppy touch. We hope you enjoy it!

I would wish to extend my most sincere thanks to Jiovanni,
Marie-Luce, Shrishti, Sanjana and our Local President Philip
for their trust in me, unflinching support and contribution to
this newsletter.

The following words by Andrew Carnegie would best
describe what I felt during the making of this newsletter:

“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common
vision, the ability to direct individual accomplishments
toward organisational objectives. It is the fuel that allows
common people to attain uncommon results.”

On this note, I would like to wish you all a pleasant reading.

COIN NU

MEMBRES

Dear Readers,
COIN NU MEMBRES – RENEWABLE ENERGY SUMMIT PROJECT
Following the World Environment Day which was celebrated on
th
the 5 June, this article is focussed on bringing light on the

various issues and aspects towards a sustainable environment.
Climate change, too much pollution, not enough clean fresh

water, deforestation are just some of the environmental issues
we are facing today. Climate change is considered as the
single greatest threat we have ever faced. The poorest of the
poor have always been the first affected; drought, flood, food
shortage are imperilling the lives of millions. It is high time to

take action to counter those adverse effects to achieve a
greener and more sustainable standard of living. We, JCI
members, have to be active and in line with UN sustainable
development goals; Goal 13: „Take urgent action to combat

climate change and its impact’

Climate change is mostly an energy problem. The vast majority
of the carbon and greenhouse gases we emit into the
environment are generated due to our need for energy. We use
energy everyday of our life; watching television, washing
clothes, cooking, taking a shower, using a laptop, computer,
mobile phone, our vehicles require gasoline and diesel; street
lighting; shopping mall; the list can be exhaustive. But do we
really ponder where this energy comes from? Most of our
energy consumption is fuelled through the burning of fossil

fuels. However, with experts predicting the extinct of fossil fuel
by 2050, there is the urge to find other sources of energy. With
a power cut of 2-3 hours, we are already irritated and feeling
helpless at home. Now imagine being deprived of access to
energy; we will surely not survive.

Most of us have already come across the new trend
„Renewable Energy‟. But what is renewable energy and where
does it come from? Putting it in a simple form: renewable
17
energies are those generated from sources that do not have a
finite end. The typically example of renewable energy we think

of are those from natural sources such as solar, wind and

water power. However, they are not the only one. The other not
so common forms of renewable energy include biomass, solid
wastes, biofuel, tidal energy and geothermal forms of energy.
However the implementation of renewable energy has to
overcome several barriers. These hurdles include
commercialization barriers due to its new technology, tax

distortions, failure of the market to promote the benefits of
renewable to the public, market barriers such as lack of

information and funding.
In this line, in order to be able to move towards renewable
energy onto commercialization and making Mauritius more

environmentally green and sustainable, we are organising a
renewable energy summit. This summit will bring together
academics and industries to further ease with the
implementation of renewable energy and try to overcome the
various barriers.

In the current time, renewable energy is a must due to the
following factors: fossil fuel is limited; the planet is already
experiencing extreme conditions in terms of climate change

and carbon emissions; energy security; environmental damage;
economic stability and public health among others. The energy

summit will be a reminder of the benefits that the environment
bestows upon us and also the fact that we need to protect it in
order to ensure a safe planet for our progenies. The future of
our planet and children is in our hand and the future is green

energy, sustainability and renewable energy.

Aspiring Member’s Corner

Avina Uckiah

Joining an organization whose vision would
.
match my own personal values was
something I had never anticipated. It did
however happen when I first read the JCI

creed. There was instant chemistry.

Although I had previously heard about the
organization from the media, I had the chance

to learn more about it first-hand from my
neighbour, Shrishti Boodaloo, 2015 Local
Treasurer and 2016 Local Secetary who has
been an active member of JCI Beau-Bassin/
Rose-Hill for the past 4 years now.

What pushed me to join? Simple- Sharing the
same vision as JCI as mentioned above, and
aiming towards a common goal, which is the
betterment of society through selfless
service.

I had reached that crucial point in my life
when I realised that social work would pave
the way for a more fulfilling and meaningful
life. No job in the world could have given me
that sense of fulfillment.
Here, I must admit that JCI offers young
people an excellent platform not only to serve
others through sustainable projects but also
to enjoy every part of it.

Looking forward to being an official member
of the big JCI family soon!

KI NEWS JCI?

2017 JCI Mauritius TOYP – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko 25

The Outstanding Young Person Award (TOYP) was an event designed to

showcase the extraordinary young people in Mauritius. It takes courage to
act differently than the crowd but to standout requires a whole new level of

courage. It was an honor to be part of the team who set up the event. It is

with events such as these that JCI empower its members. There is only so
much you can learn by taking a project management course or event

planning course, the real learning part comes when you go the field and

taking on the spot decisions.
Event hosted by: JCI Curepipe

EDIKER POU ERADIKER – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko

If I had to award a project which best encompasses the crucial role

of NGOs in society, it would definitely be this one. The beauty of this
project is that it touches Domestic Violence, a very sensitive, which

affects all levels of society and the project bridges the gap between

the law, victims and the law enforcers.

Domestic Violence has been a problem for milleniums and

fortunately for the victims, the laws have changed to better protect
them. What has not changed is that the victims and law enforcers do

not master the law and the ones who do are the lawyers and they do
not
come cheap which is a problem for the lower-incomes. The
second problem is that there many other NGOs and hotlines out

there to support the victims but how can this be of any use if the

victims do not know 1) they exist, 2) how to contact them, 3) the law
and 4) their rights.

This is why projects such as Ediker Pou Eradiker are so important. The law is only a piece of paper if nobody knows their rights.

The most beautiful part, in my opinion, came during question time at the Roche-Bois event when an attendee asked what

happens when a victim does not get a pension and husband cannot afford to give her one, and the Mafubo representative
answered: "The victim will have to learn to stand on her two feet and support herself".

Event hosted by: JCI City Plus

World President Dawn’s Visit

. By Marie Luce Chang-Ko

She is definitely one of the most intriguing high-profile persons I have

ever had the chance to meet. She is indeed very warm and down-to-

earth. However, my main take-back from this event is the reminder of
keeping things simple.

She spoke about several of the most interesting projects she worked

on and in all of them, the solutions were simple and yet amazingly

efficient. Simple logs can help children get to school, in some places; a

dustbin can make a cleaner environment for schools. This is essence

JCI for me.

Creativity is a superpower and all we need is that one idea to solve the

problem.

It is too easy to find complicated solutions, yet if we step out of the box,

we might see things differently from the outside.

Yes! It is easier said than done but then again it would have been
boring had it been an easy task ;)

Another interesting point which she highlighted was how the events
empowered the members by taking them outside of their comfort

zones. The events allow members to run micro-businesses thus giving

the members opportunities to try something different from their current

jobs. JCI does provide interesting empowerment opportunities to its

members and those who are successful embark on amazing

adventures. How can a journey to Mexico not be exciting?

The final point was the importance of making an event fun. It does not

have to be serious all the time. We can promote local business but

creating fun events and competition. I think this is a great approach.

I was definitely inspired by her speech and it was definitely a nice

back-to-basics course.

INITIATION TO ARCHERY – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko
Archery is one of the most inclusive sports there is. Because archery is more about execution and self-discipline rather
than athletic capabilities and genetics, it addresses a broader audience, some of which has never been able to partake in

a sport for some reason. It is a common misconception that one must be strong or have perfect eye-sight to be an archer.
Truth is, the equipment is custom fitted to the archer and not the other way around. Every bow, arrow and pieces of
equipment has been carefully selected and adapted for its user. Besides being an ancient form of hunting and warfare,

Archery (or toxophily) is often used, very much like Yoga or Tai Chi, as a means of meditation and relaxation. During the
shot process, one must learn to block off all external stimuli and focus on the task at hand. During those ten seconds, the
only things that matter are you, your bow, your arrow and your target. A great way break off from the fast pace and stress
of everyday life. And once the arrow is let loose we cannot change its fate, be it a good arrow or a bad arrow. In archery
like in life some events are beyond our control and archery teaches us that this it is ok to miss our target now and then, to
accept the outcome, learn from mistakes made and prepare for the next shot. Archery is not only a great sport for the
body but also for the mind. Not to mention we get to enjoy great company and the great outdoors.

INTERVIEW WITH GAEL VEERASAMY

PRESIDENT OF ROSE-HILL ARCHERY CLUB

Tell us more about yourself…
.
Gael Veerasamy, 32. I am an instructor at the post-
secondary and tertiary level in the field of
communications and media and since 2017, the

President of the Rosehill Archery Club.

Tell us about your passion for archery and
when did it start?

Archery was always an interest of mine since
childhood but I can safely say the London 2012
Olympics is the event that triggered the passion. From
there I asked around and learned about the Rosehill
Archery club and the rest is history.

Tell us about the Rose hill archery club…
The Rose-Hill Archery Club (or Rosehill Association de
Tir a l‟Arc) is actually the oldest archery club in
Mauritius. Born in the 80‟s, it predates the creation of
the actual Mau ritius Archery Federation by nearly a
decade. Today we are 30 members strong and
growing with shooters of all ages and levels.

What are the challenges being faced?

The biggest challenge archery is facing in Mauritius is

a lack of exposure of the discipline as a sport.

Mauritius has around 6 registered archery clubs as

well as several archery schools scattered all over the
island. While Archery is a well-known leisure activity in

of those who would like to pursue a
the island, many

career in the sport do not know who to talk to.

Thankfully the internet is helping bridging this gap.

JCI Family Day – by Marie Luce Chang-Ko
JCI 101- What to expect when participating in a JCI Bring-and-Share?
First of all, you get a LOT of food made with love. Secondly, these folks

know how to party and finally there is nothing heartwarming than seeing
several generations laughing to together- Now, I know it´s not a
competition but I absolutely loved the BBQ marshmallows - I hadn't had

one of those gooey babies in forever - My next favorite would be the
super moist sponge cake (Mental note to add another 15km to my run).
Another delicacy which intrigued me was the Pakistani salad which was
just wow - The burgers were also really good, they just melted in my
mouth at eat bite - To sum up, you get a lot of food, a lot of love and a lot
of laugh.

PS: My apologies to those whom I didn't mention- my stomach was too

full by the time I reached your dish- BUT (!) you have been added to my
To-Taste list

Induction Session – by Avina Uckiah
“As young leaders, JCI members hold the key to solving some of the most
oppressing challenges of our times.”- Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary General

This was one of the many motivational messages which my fellow aspiring
members and myself imbibed during the recent full-day Induction Session held
on 02 July 2017 at the JCI Secretariat.
I found the contents of the JCI Impact and JCI Achieve courses very much

relevant to aspiring members of the JCI community.
I would also wish to place on record the dedication of the trainers on that day,

and would like to take this opportunity to thank them heartily.
We all came out of the Induction Session feeling enriched and enthusiastic 29
about joining JCI and telling ourselves that we can truly make a positive impact
on society as young active citizens working together.
