vestigate the users’ motivations and wishes. It provides as a mediator to
bridge the interactions betweens us, the designers, and the participants.
We made a workbook where the participants can fill in a few questions.
The questions vary from filling in their timeline of a general day to rate the
most important values in life for them.
Here, the assignment was to list 10 values from most important to least
important. As you can see, people chose the value ‘Safety’ as one of the
most important values. This is where our main idea to improve the safety
in the city center. We feel that is really important for people to feel safe,
during the day but also at night. Especially (female) students might feel
less safe. This while students are also the biggest group of people that are
often in the city center.

Figure 2 Here, people needed to list potential Citybeacon functions from impor-
tant to not important.
These pages show that people think that the emergency button is an
important function for the city beacon. This is also directly connected to
feeling safe. One has the feeling an emergency button is a more impor-
tant option if this person does not feel safe.
We think that we can make people feel safer by working on the commu-
nity in the city center. Things like the feeling of community can really help
you make feel safe in the city center. If you have the feeling of community
and do not feel alone, you might feel safer. The feeling that you can com-
municate with people can also help. This is where our idea of creating a
safe community that helps each other feel safe came from.

A value proposition is a medium to give a visual presenta-

and the value map that solves the user’s problems.
The customer profile map is divided into three parts: the
gains, the pains and the customer jobs. The users do not
have a good way to get in touch with others in the city
in case of an accident. The users want to achieve better
communication in case of incidents and overall a safer city.
They want to be able to spread information in a good way
themselves.
These problems will be solves by the value map. There will
be a feeling of community thanks to the SafetyBeacon.
This feeling of community will help with getting a safer city
and will also display information to connect people. This
way, users have a better communication with each other
and feel safer. Figure 4 shows our value proposition.

stages our customer journey has. This is based
on the conceptual design idea explained in the
second paragraph of chapter 4. For these stag-

After this, we plotted out all the possible touch-
points and their corresponding channels. The
touchpoints are the moments when users inter-
act with the App. The channels explain how the
users use the touchpoint.

Figure 13 Storyboard
Pag. 18 Figure 13 shows the storyboard we made. We did
not make it too complex to keep it clear. In this
scenario someone lost her keys. She walks to her
door and feels in her pocket. At that moment she
is aware of the fact that she lost her keys. So, she
decides to go to the Citybeacon to place an adver-
tisement. Luckily, there is someone who finds her
keys at the same time. The finder of the keys knows
about the concept of the SafetyBeacon, so he goes
to the Citybeacon and reacts on the advertisement.
In this way, the person who lost her keys gets a
reaction on her phone. She also receives name and
phone number of the finder of her keys. As follows,
they get in touch with each other and the keys can
be returned.
There are of course many more possible scenarios,
like a theft, missing people, missing pets etc. This is
just an example that we choose to make clear what
the general procedure of using the SafetyBeacon
is. Other scenario’s such as announcing a burglary
might not have the responde part of this scenario

End Result
When looking back at the project, we are reasonably happy with the final concept. We think Tilde bekker
that our application has a lot of potential to create a community in which citizens help each
other to create a safe living-environment. Things we still want to improve upon are thinking Experts
of how we are going to stimulate people to use the application. While there is a lot of poten-
tial in our concept, we still need to think about the gains for the user and how we are going jaliang chuang
to attract the user towards using the application. We also still want to improve on the flow of manon junggeburth
using the application. Entering in all the details takes up a lot of time, which repels the user
from wanting to use the application. Therefore, interacting with the app needs to have a nice Client
and quick flow, which is something we still need to improve.
