Burr spent a year studying and teaching the Lotte Berk Method in a
Manhattan studio, then opened his first Lotte Berk studio in Greenwich,
Connecticut. Almost immediately, Burr noticed that the knees, back, and
shoulders of some of their clients were not responding well to exercise and
sought the help of a physical therapist. Under his guidance, he revised the
exercises to focus on the students' muscles without affecting their joints.

In the 1990s, Burr and Carl opened three more Lotte Berk studios in New
Canaan, Darien and Westport, Connecticut. At the end of their ten-year
license, their four studios were booming, but their version of the Lotte Berk
method was so different from the licensor's version that they decided not to
renew it. In 2001 they founded The Bar Method, sold their Connecticut
studio and opened their flagship Bar Method studio in San Francisco,
California. Two years later, Bur Mimi's sister Leonard Fleischmann and her
husband Mark opened their first studio in Los Angeles, Bar Method.

Since then, Burr and Carl have been franchisees at more than 20 Bar Method
Studios in California, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, and
Washington. They divide their time between managing franchisees and
producing Bar Method media products, including two "Change Your Body!"
Workout DVDs. and "Accelerated Training," which was launched in 2009.
At the same time that Burr and Carl opened their first bar method studio,
other former methods guru Lotte Berk began developing their own version of
the technique. In 2003, Lotte Berk executives Fred DeVito and Elisabeth
Haffpapp gathered eight of their fellow teachers and headed to Exhale Spa,
ten blocks from their former studio, where they now teach a version of Lotte
Berk called Core Fusion.
The withdrawal of so many important teachers resulted in the Lotte-Berk
Method collapsing on its own in 2005 at 57th Street. Other parts of the Lotte
Berk Method are Pure Barre, Fluidity, The Dailey Method, BarrePhysique,
Barre3, Karve, PopPhysique, Go Figure, Body Fit, The Debbie Frank Studio,
and Bodd.
