How to Succeed in this course SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 3 Fall 2023 Dr. Emily Hangen (she/her/hers) Office: Bannow 465 Office Hours: Sign up link here I welcome you to come to my office hours! This is a time to ask questions, to discuss ideas, or to simply introduce yourself. To avoid overlapping with others, please sign up for office hours using the link provided above, or email me if you need to schedule a time outside of my normal office hours. (See page 1 for my email address). Mastery grading scheme: I use a grading scheme that favors correction and long-term mastery of the material over immediate perfection No busy work: I only assign work that has a clear purpose and I am transparent with you by explaining the purpose of each assignment. Relevance to you: I design assignments and teach skills that help you connect the course content to your own life. As a motivation researcher, I know that deep and long-lasting learning occurs when we study material that is personally relevant to us and when we enjoy deeply engaging in the learning process rather than fretting over grades. Below are a couple of the research-based practices I use to facilitate your learning experience: My Teaching Philosophy Class Engagement (20%) Assignments (30%) Mastery Exams (30%) Final Exam (20%) Your final grade consists of 4 components: class engagement, assignments, two mastery exams and a final podcast. Details about each of these components is provided in the following pages. (Notice that half of your final grade comes from regular learning behaviors--coming to class prepared and engaging by completing all assignments.) Draft

"Taking a memory test not only assesses what one knows, but also enhances later retention, a phenomenon known as the testing effect." (ROEDIGER & KARPICKE, 2006) Class Engagement (20%) Purpose: Your class engagement grade is based on your participation in all structured class activities (such as contributing in partner/group discussions) and completing all in-class quizzes (you must be physically present for the in-class quizzes). Selfinitiated comments and questions in class are encouraged but not required. Given the unpredictability of the semester, everyone can miss up to 3 in-class quizzes no questions asked (the 3 lowest in-class quiz scores will be dropped). Details: Learning to organize and articulate your thoughts is an invaluable skill. Furthermore, active participation can lead to greater enjoyment and less boredom in class. Lastly, in-class quizzes are graded on a pass/fail basis by completion and are included for the purpose of helping you remember newly learned concepts for longer periods of time (see research on the testing effect). SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 4 Fall 2023 Coursework Assignments (30%) Purpose: To reinforce your learning and provide experiences where you can practice recognizing and/or applying concepts in your everyday life. Details: To supplement the readings, you will be asked to watch videos and complete various assignments such as completing a goal-setting exercise, measuring your attachment style, experience breaking social norms, watching a production about racial prejudice and discrimination, and more. Draft

Purpose: You will demonstrate that you are familiar with a breadth of social psychological concepts and theories and that you can apply this social psychological knowledge in creative ways. Details: You will take a final exam on Tuesday, Dec 19, at 11:30am which will consist of multiple choice questions and short essay questions. Opportunity to skip the Final Exam Because the final exam covers the same content as the in-class quizzes, I am giving each of you the option to skip the final exam and use the average score of your inclass quizzes across the semester as your final exam grade. As a reminder, you will receive class engagement credit for simply completing the in-class quizzes (see page 4) but I will also keep a running average of your actual in-class quiz scores in the grade section of blackboard (this average is calculated from in-class quizzes only--it does not include assignment or video questions). Mastery Exams (30%) Purpose: To ensure that you have a solid understanding of the course concepts and to demonstrate that you have developed individual mastery of the material. Details: You will take 2 mastery exams to demonstrate your mastery of the material. These exams will be taken in class and will consist of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions. Final Exam (20%) SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 5 Fall 2023 *Exam policy: All exams must be taken in-person on the dates scheduled (the only exception is in rare emergency circumstances.)** Draft

SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 7 Fall 2023 Classroom community Because social psychology focuses on human behavior, our class discussions will broach a variety of sensitive and personal topics (e.g. biases, stereotypes, prejudice, violence, relationships, etc.). As such, this class provides a wonderful opportunity for powerful learning--an opportunity to discover something new about ourselves, to challenge our Express disagreement without dismissing or putting down the people we are talking with. Avoid: "That is a dumb idea." Replace with: "I disagree with X because. . ." Argue points not people. Avoid: "You don't know what you are talking about." Replace with: "I disagree with X because. . ." assumptions, and to expand our ability to see issues from different perspectives. If we authentically engage, our conversations will not be easy; we sometimes will make mistakes in our speaking and our listening. I invite you to join me in exercising patience, courage, imagination, and any other quality that will help us work through these complex issues together. In our classroom I will ask that you show respect for others. This means that we will work together to remind each other to: Draft

Download and review the class slides from our course website. Ask a classmate for notes about activities and video clips we watched in class because these will not be included in the class slides. Missing Class Class attendance is a valuable part of your college learning experience. In this class, a lot of learning and growth happens when we are exploring ideas together in class, so I encourage you to not miss class. That said, I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise. If you miss class, please take the following steps: 1. 2. (You will get a 0 for missing a quiz, but your lowest 3 quiz scores are dropped). WARNING: Make sure to check the schedule so that you do NOT miss any exams. What if you get physically or mentally sick during the semester? First and foremost, please take care of yourself and get the help you need (see support resources on page 9). Your health is more important than this course! Next, if you think you might miss an exam because you are sick please contact me as soon as possible and be prepared to provide a doctor's note. Also, if you will miss a few classes, let me know and we will create a plan for how to get you back on track once you have recovered. Late Work In order to give you feedback as soon as possible and to keep track of all student work, I ask that you please turn in your work on time. If you choose to not follow deadlines, you will lose 10% per day late. Requesting a Deadline Extension* I understand that life happens and sometimes a little extra time goes a long way. For that reason, I offer you an opportunity to be proactive and get an extension. If you suspect that you might not be able to make an upcoming deadline please simply email me to request a deadline extension at least 48 hours (2 days) before the deadline. In general, I will grant an extra day no questions asked. *Deadline extensions do not apply to any quizzes or exams taken during class. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 8 Fall 2023 Draft

When can you use AI tools in this course? The use of generative AI writing tools (such as ChatGPT, GrammarlyGO, GPT-3, GPT-4, BERT, or others) is restricted in this class to 1) specific contexts/assignments where I openly allow AI to be used and 2) only if such AI tool use is properly acknowledged. Why is the use of AI tools in this course restricted? AI writing tools are restricted in this course because assignments for this course have been designed to encourage self-reflection on your own personal experiences which cannot be achieved by asking a computer to generate your response. Use of AI tools Academic Integrity All of us at Fairfield University are committed to upholding the value of academic honesty. As a faculty member I am committed to exemplifying academic integrity myself and to holding my students accountable as well. There are serious consequences for academic dishonesty including receiving an 0 grade on the assignment in question, receiving a mark on your file in the academic dean’s office, getting an F grade on the course, and when appropriate even expulsion. You are responsible for knowing Fairfield University’s academic integrity policy and you will be held accountable even if you commit academic dishonesty unintentionally. Please, please, please make sure you understand these guidelines which you can find here! In general, you are expected to submit your own work and you should give credit to any ideas or language that is not your own. SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY | PAGE 9 Fall 2023 How to credit AI tool usage in this course? You must acknowledge the use of AI in your assignment in an "Acknowledgement of AI Use" statement that: Specifies which technology was used (ChatGPT, GPT-3, etc) and on what date Includes explicit descriptions of how the information was generated Identifies the prompts used Explains how the output was used in your work Examples of such Acknowledgments of AI Use can be found on Monash University's website. The use of AI outside of contexts where the instructor specifies its use, or failure to acknowledge any use of AI technologies in your work will be considered an academic integrity violation. Draft
