Jingle Bells-is one of the best-known and

commonly sung American songs in the world. It was
written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and
published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh"
in the autumn of 1857. It has been claimed that it was
originally written to be sung by a Sunday school
choir; however, historians dispute this, stating that it
was much too ‘racy" (and secular) to be sung by a
children's church choir in the days it was written.

Although originally intended for the Thanksgiving
season, and having no connection to Christmas, it
became associated with Christmas music and the
holiday season in general decades after it was first
performed on Washington Street in Boston in 1857.
Some area choirs adopted it as part of their repertoire
in the 1860s and 1870s, and it was featured in a variety
of parlor song and college anthologies in the 1880s. It
was first recorded in 1889 on an Edison cylinder.

Christmas Time is Here-This piano-based piece

has become a Christmas favorite thanks to its use on
the 1965 TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas, where
the Peanuts characters sing the song. The vocal
version runs 2:47, while an instrumental version goes
6:07. Vince Guaraldi, who composed the tune, also
wrote the score for the special, which is the famous
Peanuts theme music (the song is actually called
“Linus and Lucy"). Using jazz in a children's special
was very unusual, but it was a brilliant choice, helping
the special appeal to both kids and adults.

Originally, this was an instrumental piece that Vince
Guaraldi wrote to open A Charlie Brown Christmas.
About a month before it aired, Lee Mendelson, who
produced the special, decided it might work better
with some words, so he wrote the lyric in about 10
minutes sitting at his kitchen table. “It was a poem
that just came to me," he told PRI in 2014. “Never
changed the words to this day. It was only about a
minute long."

The Dreidel Song-The lyricist for the English

version is Samuel S. Grossman(1896) and the composer
of the English version is listed as Samuel E. Goldfarb
(also S. E. Goldfarb). The Yiddish version was both
written and composed by Mikhl Gelbart, but he listed
the author as Ben Arn, a pseudonym referring to
himself as the son of Aaron. There is a question about
who composed this music, as the melody for both the
Yiddish and the English versions are precisely the
same. The meaning of the lyrics to the Yiddish and
English versions is largely the same. However, in
English the singer sings about a dreidel, whereas in
the Kafkaesque original Judeo-German version, the
singer is the four-sided spinning top made out of
‘blay’, which is lead. The original version is
historically accurate. In the English version the singer
has a four-sided spinning top made out of clay, yet
clay is not easily spun.

Jolly Old St. Nick-is a Christmas song that

originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller
(1833-1913), published as “Lilly's Secret" in The Little
Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's
lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby,
who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the
Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use
closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.

The music has been attributed to John Piersol
McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of
Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written
the song in 1867. The “Johnny" mentioned in the song
who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son,
John, who died as a child.

Ode to Joy-is an ode written in the summer of 1785

by German poet, playwright, and historian Friedrich
Schiller and published the following year in Thalia. A
slightly revised version appeared in 1808, changing
two lines of the first and omitting the last stanza.

“Ode to Joy" is best known for its use by Ludwig van
Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth
Symphony, completed in 1824. Beethoven's text is not
based entirely on Schiller's poem, and introduces a
few new sections. His tune (but not Schiller's words)
was adopted as the Anthem of Europe by the Council
of Europe in 1972 and subsequently by the European
Union.

Celtic Bell Carol-is a popular Christmas carol, with

music by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in
1914 and lyrics by Peter J. Wilhousky. The song is
based on the Ukrainian folk chant "Shchedryk".
Wilhousky's lyrics are under copyright protection
(owned by Carl Fischer Music); the music is in the
public domain.

The music is based on a four-note ostinato. It has
been performed in many genres: classical, metal, jazz,
country music, rock, and pop. The piece has also been
featured in films, television shows, and parodies.

In the Bleak Midwinter-is a Christmas carol based

on a poem by the English poet Christina Rossetti.
The poem was published, under the title "A Christmas
Carol", in the January 1872 issue of Scribner's
Monthly. The poem first appeared set to music in The
English Hymnal in 1906 with a setting by Gustav
Holst. Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) was an English
composer, arranger and teacher. He began composing
when he was about twelve. He served as a church
organist and choirmaster. When neuritis in his hand
forced him away from the keyboard he made a living
as an orchestral trombonist before attaining success as
a composer.

Up on a Haunted Housetop-Lyrics:

Once on a spooky Christmas eve, As Santa was
making deliveries; A fog rolled in and howls rang out,
As Santa landed on a haunted house!
Oh, oh, no! I wouldn’t go! Oh, oh, no! What’s that in
the snow? Up on the housetop, creak, creak, creak.
Now from the chimney comes a shriek!

Program Notes (cont.)

The reindeer were scared and wanted to fly, but Santa
stayed calm and went inside, Down through the
chimney with Old St. Nick, even a ghost would
consider that a trick!
Oh, oh, no! I wouldn’t go! Oh, oh, no! What’s that in
the snow? Up on the housetop, reindeer shake, afraid
that dear Santa’s made a big………..mis-take!
Down in the old house St. Nicholas explored. The
creaking he’d heard was just a loose floor board. The
shriek from the chimney must’ve been the kitten
standing by the fireplace, drinking milk, when Santa
made his landing!
There were stockings on the mantle that Santa stuffed
with toys, Dolls for the little girls and games for the
boys. “This house was old” thought Santa, “a bit in
disrepair.” “But certainly the spirit of Christmas was
there.”
Santa pulled on the reigns and charged into the air,
the reindeer and he had a good Christmas scare! But
now they knew better for they had discovered, you
can’t judge a book, or a house, by its cover!
