Program Notes
Celtic Air and Dance No 2- "Danny Boy" is a

ballad set to an ancient Irish melody. English songwriter
Frederic Weatherly wrote the lyrics, which are usually set to
the Irish tune of the "Londonderry Air". The song was written
in a small town called 'Limavady'[1] It is most closely
associated with Irish communities.

"Star of the County Down" is an Irish ballad set near
Banbridge in County Down, in Northern Ireland. The words
are by Cathal McGarvey (1866–1927) from Ramelton, County
Donegal.[1] The tune is similar to several other works,
especially that of the English "Dives and Lazarus", also called
"Kingsfold", well known from several popular hymns.

The Tears of Arizona- Commissioned to

commemorate the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl

Harbor, this piece takes a unique approach and focuses on

the small amounts of oil (often referred to as the "tears of

Arizona") that continue to leak out of the USS Arizona. The

music begins very solemnly, referring to the tears that

continue to be shed daily by the sunken ship. The following

section (“The Pride of Arizona”) moves past the tears and to

the pride of the crew members and the feeling of the "spirit of

Aloha." Percussion loosely imitates the groove of a luau, yet is

juxtaposed with moments of pause and reflection. The final

statement feels incomplete, reminding the audience that the

tears have not stopped flowing. 4

Program Notes (cont.)

The Tempest-is a programmatic work meant to

depict a breaking storm at sea. The piece begins with legato

clarinet and low woodwind voices playing a warm half note

line. The other instruments join in the same form until the

storm begins to pick up. At measure 9, horns, trombones,

saxophones, and clarinets play an accented quarter note

melody while the other winds and percussion play a sparse

accented accompaniment.

At measure 18, flutes (and later trumpets) play a dancing,
skittering ostinato, perhaps emblematic of swirling winds at
sea. This ostinato is juxtaposed against the opening lyrical
line (maybe the water of the sea?) for a nice contrasting
effect. As the piece continues to develop, voices become more
agitated, writing becomes thicker, and accents become
heavier.

Finally at 69 the entire band builds a six measure crescendo,
ending with dissonant major second tied whole notes in the
clarinet, alto saxophone, and horn crescendo. The band does
not let up, ending on a triumphant fortissimo unison G
concert.

Aces of the Air- was copyrighted in 1942 and was

one of a number of marches placed in his “Marching to
Victory” band folio, which contained 15 other march
selections. The designation of “ace” began during World War
I and was awarded to a pilot who was credited with five
confirmed enemy planes shot down.

Then I Saw the Lucent Sky- This work was

inspired by the music of Hildegaard von Bingen, a medieval
Benedictine nun whose chant melodies are remarkable for
their soaring passages and simple beauty, and whose
theological and visionary writings were unique for her time.
The title comes from one of her writings.

Acclamations- was commissioned by the Long

Beach music department and was written by Ed Huckeby.
Huckeby is currently a Professor of Music and Associate Vice
President for Academic Affairs at Northeastern State
University-Broken Arrow. Prior to this, he has served as the
arts administrator for the Tulsa Ballet Company, was a
department chair of the music department of Northwestern
Oklahoma State University, and was a public school teacher.
He has created over 45 commissioned works and regularly
serves as a clinician, adjudicator and conductor for
instrumental ensembles around the world.
