In my opinion, I believe that Sugam Karnatica
adapted to the new norm in the best way possible

that we received the same amount of knowledge
that we would have gained in a physical class.
However, I am still eagerly waiting for everything to

lot of space outside and it was always nice to see
the kids playing there after class, sliding down the One of the many group sessions

a lot of life to the whole house. There was also a
tree right in front of the house that I liked. It was a Annual Navarathri prayer at Sugam House
big, beautiful and majestic Neem tree. Since
Neem has medicinal property, I feel that it cast a
very good shadow on the Sugam house. Some
kids came here when they were 10, and now they
are 18. So, they practically grew up in that house.
The house had a very good vibration as well. This
house will be a very fond part of Sugam’s history.”

Teacher Suba said, “It was very emotional to move
out because we were in that house for 8 years and
have grown to love the place and the vibration
inside. The place is one thing, but it’s the people
in it that makes it what it is. It was a very tearful
experience for all of us and the students as well.
Cleaning, packing and then coming back to an
empty place was very emotional. I wasn’t happy at
first as I was very emotionally attached to the
house, but we had to do it for the greater cause of
Sugam.”

After all the memories that we’ve made there, it is
sad but it just might be a good thing to move on
to another fresh start. After all, Sugam is not just a
place, but a community and a vision.I loved
Sugam house for many reasons and it is hard to
move on from something that has had a big
impact on my life. I’ve been with Sugam since I
was 5 and I turn 14 this year. In the ten years, I
have made a lot of friends and learnt a lot of
things. We were always served with great food at
the Sugam House, and it was a good day for me if
it was nasi lemak. Sugam is a really big part of my
life and I hope that when I am done studying, I
can come back and contribute in a way I can, by
adding to the growth of another generation of
Sugam kids.

GOODBYE SUGAM HOUSE

POEM WRITTEN BY SUMITRA JAYSEELAN

In 2012 we moved into this house of education,
We filled it with our love for arts, culture and tradition

We had 8 years of students come and stay,
Leaving a lot of memories along the way.

Innumerable rehearsals, lively stage performances,
The stress of examinations and festival celebrations,
Kicking football at the field, having breakfast with friends,
Not forgetting times of prayer and giving God our thanks.

We shared many memories, we hold it in our core,
We taught each other, while learning so much more,

8 years of growth, 8 years of achievement,
8 years of blessings, and 8 years of talent.

The pandemic shook us and we had to pivot online,
Virtual activities, tasks reassigned,

We thank our teaching force for facing the new norm,
Reaching out to students, anticipating the end of the storm.

We are officially leaving “Sugam House” as it has come to be known,
Soon, we will find a new place for our tales to be told.

Thank you to our Sugam family for making this space a home,
We move to a new one, carrying with us the Sugam chromosome.

Temple worship in the new normal

WRITTEN BY JANARDTHAN SURENDRAN, 15

The experience of the online prayers is not the same with the experience that we can obtain only in the
temple. Prayers can be more intimate at home with our families. We can also increase spiritual
relationships between family members and chant mantras to create positive vibrations in our homes.
We might have to continue this routine for quite a while. In order to enjoy the temple environment, we
must work together and follow the instructions given by the government. Together we can overcome this
disease, and go to the temple anytime we want. So let’s all pray that this pandemic ends, so that we can
live without any worries. This also goes to show that God is everywhere and not just necessarily in the
temple surroundings .

Origin of worship with kavadi - story of Idumban

WRITTEN BY CHANDRIKA PRABHU, 15

Once upon a time, there lived a demon named Idumban. The name Idumban is very symbolic and it

means arrogance. This demon was a disciple of Sage Agathiyar, a revered Vedic sage of Hinduism. One day,

Sage Agathiyar ordered Idumban to bring him the Shivagiri and Shaktigiri hills, as he wanted to pray to

them as Lord Shiva and Goddess Uma. Idumban, along with his wife, went northward, and prayed to both

the hills while chanting the respective mantras. He then used snakes to tie both the hills on either side of a

pole and carried the pole on his shoulders as a kavadi. When he was near the hill of Palani, Idumban felt

fatigued, and decided to take a break.

At this stage, Lord Muruga had been outwitted in a contest for going round the world. His elder brother,
Lord Ganapathy had won the prized ‘nyaanappazham’, or the fruit of wisdom, by simply going round his
parents, whom the elder sibling had declared as his whole world. Lord Muruga had instead travelled around
the world on his peacock, convinced that he will be the victor. Angry with what he considered as an unfair
loss, the frustrated child left the divine parents and came to the foot of the Sivagiri hill. Siva pacified him
by saying that Muruga himself was the fruit (pazham) of all wisdom and knowledge. Hence the hills where
he was at was called Pazham-nee ('You are the fruit') or Palani. (Later Muruga would withdraw to the hill and
settle there as a recluse in peace and solitude.) Meanwhile, Lord Muruga spotted Idumban, and decided to
play a trick to test his devotion to Sage Agathiyar.

Origin of worship with kavadi - story of Idumban

WRITTEN BY CHANDRIKA PRABHU, 15

Idumban, refreshed by a good rest, decided to resume his quest. Lifting his pole, he realized he could not lift
the hills as they had become too heavy, Idumban noticed a young boy wearing only a loincloth sitting at the
hilltop. He demanded that the boy vacate at once, so that he could resume his task. As the boy refused,
Idumban flew into a rage and began fighting the boy. Soon, Idumban was defeated and killed. Later,
Idumban was brought back to life on the humble request of his wife and Sage Agathiyar.

Upon realizing that the young boy was actually Lord Muruga under disguise, Idumban immediately
prostrated himself before the lord. He prayed to Lord Muruga for the honour of serving him by standing
guard before his temple. He also prayed for Lord Muruga to bless and help all mortals who carry the kavadi
to honour the lord, and to rid them of all their miseries.

And this, is how people began to worship Lord Muruga with this ceremonial sacrifice of carrying a kavadi.
