Experiencing Grief FOR THE FIRST TIME:
a useless guide for choosing love
As we all know, life does not come with instructions.
As we start growing up, most of us start getting used to the idea that certain traditionally
human experiences will eventually happen in our lives… Falling in love, having a child,
following a specific career ideal, moving to another country… So many scenarios and
preconceptions that vary from person to person.
But the truth is that the only certain thing that we all will experience, no matter who
we are, is death. Not only our own, but the one of the people we love. Who prepares for
that? Who understands that? Isn’t death the biggest mystery and taboo of life? Isn’t death
the most used buzzword?
My father died less than three months ago, and with this I realized how much we take life for
granted. Let’s face it: young/prime adulthood can be considered the healthiest time of life,
biological function and physical performance reach their peak from 20–35 years of age. We
feel invincible. We focus on the positive. We avoid feeling vulnerable. But life is wise and the
reality knocks the door, when we most need it.
There are three terms that I became very familiar with since the passing of my father:
¤ Grief involves many different emotions, actions, and expressions, all of which help the
person come to terms with the loss of a loved one. Grief doesn’t look the same for
everyone. Every loss is different.
¤ Bereavement is what a person goes through when someone close to them dies. It’s
the state of having suffered a loss.
¤ Mourning is the outward expression of loss and grief. Mourning includes rituals and
other actions that are specific to each person’s culture, personality, and religion.
“
Bereavement and mourning are both part of the grieving process.
This article in itself is an
love oxymoron; there are no recipes

Writing this article is rather egoistic because is one of the expressions of my grief, rather

rather than a negative feeling.

The Act Of Making Love Or Having Sex
Another tricky one. Admitted or not, everybody does it. That’s why we
are all here, and that’s why babies keep on being born. We all are
sexual beings.
Nowadays SEX is everywhere. On publicity panels, in commercials, in
music... It’s easier than ever to have access to porn or any sexual
content; but when I think about sex, or making love, and when I open
conversations about this subject there are other things that I like to look
at.
Intimacy and Trust – that sacred space that is created in between two
individuals, which allows for openness, discovery, vulnerability, learning,
and exploring. The space where being naked means being completely
yourself. Accepting and loving towards who you are and towards the

5 Thoughts On Creativity
Last year I had this feeling that I wanted to live a more
creative life. I didn’t know what I was looking for until I fall in
love with the quilling art (quilling: paper stripes rolled up
and glued together to create decoration and pictures) of
Yulia Brodskaya. I just said to myself: “Wow, this is so
beautiful, I want to learn this as well!” I ordered my first
tools and I started to practice. Soon I organized my first
workshop where I could start teaching the technique and
the technique could start teaching us about our creativity.
Since then I worked together with over a hundred people
on connecting to and unleashing their creativity while
learning the quilling technique.
During these workshops and conversations many
misconceptions and ideas emerged, in the following you
can read my take on them.
1. Creativity is diverse.
One of Judit’s quilling pieces

is creative in something. I know some people who are
creative in their storytelling; others, who are creative in

sharpens my way of thinking. And it also helps me to

5. You are that creative type!
3. Creativity is a learning process.
At my workshops people tend to deny joining us by stating
“Oh, no, I am not that creative type!” Do you remember

In my search for my own creativity, I was wondering at some point... When we are kids, we dare to lean in and embrace our
creativity. Then we go to school. We have to meet standards, we are graded and often judged (worst case humiliated) by
teachers or classmates. We become adults who don’t do things for the first time anymore, who say that “I don’t have time for
these kind of things”. What happens then to us? We become afraid to create because we are afraid of judgment and we start to
believe that we really don’t have time to waste on ‘these kinds of things.’
But what if creativity is the key to develop any skill? What if it is anything but waste of time?
As Einstein once said: “Creativity is intelligence having fun.” What if it is the most important element to enhance our way of
thinking, our intelligence and our logic?

A bit nervous of moving from the big city Toronto to the small village of Atalaia in
Portugal we are now truly enjoying our surroundings…
We wake up early, taking in the sunrise and ocean fresh air coming in off of the
cliffs. We set our stage using our kitchen and dining rooms overlooking the Atlantic
Ocean. Now ready for the day we tirelessly make breakfast for our guests ensuring
that nothing is forgotten.
Mid morning we enjoy our plant and vegetable gardens; watering, pruning, re-
planting. Sometimes, we go for a walk to the beach and even get to go for a swim
before lunch!
When afternoon comes we eagerly wait for our next guests to arrive and greet them
with a friendly drink of their choice.
Once nighttime falls, we ensure that bread and pastries are ordered and that
everything is in place for the next day, then off to sleep.
Once waken by the sunshine and the singing of the birds, our beautiful new routine
will start again.
We have had to overcome our longing for our son, family and friends left behind in
Canada but as each day passes we appreciate the fact that we have found
something truly rewarding and that we love to do.
We are delighted with the fact that “the world comes to us” without us having to
leave our doorstep; definitely our dream has come true.
If we have learned something from our experience is that it does not make sense to

Spaghetti, yes, simple spaghetti, inspired me to develop a competency in the
kitchen. Little did I know that 6 years later that same competency would bring
me to where I am today as general manager of Meal in a Jar Inc.
That competency marinated over those 6 years as I entered university. As
president of the AIESEC Laurier committee, I often brought our teams together
around home cooked meals. I even rewarded performance with dinners from
scratch. During my two terms as President, I was incredibly fortunate to attend
19 conferences and travel to 9 countries. These experiences shaped my
perspective and palette and allowed me to develop a deep passion for
preparing and sharing unique and memorable meals.
About a month after becoming an AIESEC alumnus, I entered the phase of
“now what the hell do I do with my life?” No longer surrounded by a thriving
community of exchange-oriented operations, team building activities and
individuals focused on self-development, I began to drift. I began to experience
the terrifying tension caused by impending graduation and the social anomie of
post-AIESEC life. I had to look inward and backwards to find a light to guide
forward. What was important to me? What ignited my spirit? What people do I
want to surround myself with?

anticipation.
Guided by these questions, I started exploring a business model for delivering life design
fresh meals to companies and campuses that lacked healthy and energizing
options. Using the business model canvas and the lean start up methodology, I
was fortunate to join a senior level Entrepreneurial incubator called the Laurier
LaunchPad (www.laurierentrepreneur.ca/launchpad) By stroke of intention or
magic, I came across a brand new product, while getting a haircut, called Meal
in a Jar. After seeing the product, I immediately requested the name of the
owner, a wonderful woman named Irene who was making the jars for some
friends and family out of her home kitchen. Awestruck by the simplicity and
functionality of the meal, I called Irene and asked to join the team.
That moment kicked off an unfolding story that still mystifies me. We were
recently featured in a national newspaper called the Globe and Mail
(www.tiny.cc/MealinaJar) which outlines the start up story in more depth than I
can share in this article.
Long story short, whatever you can conceive and believe, you can achieve.
Now a year into our business, we’ve recently filmed for a major television
program called Dragon’s Den, have launched at WholeFoods Markets, and my
business partner was nominated and selected as the Women of Waterloo
Entrepreneur of the Year.
What have I learned as a drifter turned AIESECer
turned entrepreneur?
For the first time in my life, I see today as continuation of yesterday and a
precursor of tomorrow. Everything is so gradual, every habit, good and bad,
builds from yesterday’s initiation and today’s follow through. I credit a book I
picked up called The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg to shine light on habit
reinforcement.
Following a year abroad, 5 years of university including 2 years of AIESEC, my
body and mind was in shambles. The physical abuse of stress, neglecting
exercise, eating poorly, late nights, early mornings, and conferences is easy to
ignore when you are in the fast lane. It took me 8 months to recover and
reverse the downward trends I was following. Lucky me I also operated a
healthy food business; yum.
Here’s my 1, 2, 3.
Start early, hydrate, work-out (creatively, spiritually, emotionally, physically,
intellectually, whatever, just pick one and do it daily). When I focus on each of
those three items as a keystone habit, I energize.
Finally, life as an entrepreneur, especially as a recent graduate and recent
AIESEC alumnus, involves a lonely road. It tests your ability to persevere when
the next steps are unclear, carve out your path in between mountains, and
forces you to take deep, honest looks at yourself, your personality and your
motivations along the way.
Just like spaghetti, observe the best, practice the rest and let your best
batch unfold.
