The family acknowledges with sincere appreciation, the many prayers, phone calls, texts,
comforting words, floral arrangements and all expressions of kindness shown during this
time of bereavement. We thank the Windsor Village Church family for their love and support.
We also express special thanks to 21st Century Home Care providers and Vantage Hospice for
their service of caring for mom. Additionally, we’d like to thank, Mrs. Minnie Hubbard who
has been mom’s traveling companion, the ladies of the “Birthday Club” and other friends who
were always available to fill in when there was a need for the family. Please know that you are
in our hearts and we truly thank God for you in our lives.

Vernetta met and married Alray Kennedy in Birmingham, AL and to that union Brenda
Raye was born. Her youngest daughter, Joetta Rene was born from the union of her second
marriage to Joe Jennings.
Vernetta valued education and encouraged her daughters to be independent and successful
by completing their college education. She had amazingly strong faith, loved God and
always knew He would take care of her. She had the extraordinary ability to effortlessly
start a conversation with those she didn’t know. Her easy-going and empathetic nature
caused her to be a helping hand to anyone in need. Her favorite saying was, “Make me a
blessing, Lord I pray.” Her hobbies included dancing, playing cards, cooking, and shopping.
She truly enjoyed supporting and caring for her children and she joyfully helped raise her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her heart’s desire was for her family to love God
and support each other. She was known for her fiery tongue, unconditional love, spirit of
forgiveness, compassion, and empathy for others.
Vernetta was preceded in death by her parents, Reverend Mordecai Calvin and Annie Battle,
brothers, Mordecai Calvin Battle, Jr. and Ewart H. Battle, and daughter, Brenda Holmes. To
cherish her memory, she leaves daughter, Joetta J. Nevels, granddaughters, Leticia Flores
and Jornae Rideaux, great-grandchildren, Mario Flores, Daniel Flores, and Chelsea Flores,
her sister Eulalia Battle Warner, her former spouse, Joe Jennings, a host of nieces and
nephews, caregivers and friends.
