help seems God-sent and like the last straw to hang on for sanity. A connection with a friend who was into alternative healing was constantly at the back of my mind and, finally, after five months of fighting my own demons, I approached Ms Surubhi Dand, an alternative therapy healer. Her constant reassurances made me slowly confide in her and offload the ‘baggage of guilt’ I had been carrying day and night.” Surubhi’s Access Bars sessions revived positivity in Sunita and enabled her to take one day at a time and care for herself. The two one-hour sessions of Surubhi’s warm soothing hands and gentle voice drove away the dark morbid thoughts that had been engulfing her for a long time. Sunita came out of it with positive affirmations for herself which she read and re-read throughout the day. Even now, she does this every day.
When a parent loses their child, it is perhaps the greatest grief of all. This tragedy happened with Bipasha Gupta, the head of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India, Delhi. She shares, “My brilliant child Meghna-Ayesha was just 17, standing strong, tall, fair, and beautiful when she was diagnosed with an incurable ailment (MS). She slipped into a deep depression after the diagnosis, and left us one day after suffering from massive heart failure.”
At that soul-crushing point, she came across her late daughter Ayesha’s best friend’s mother, who encouraged her to recover from trauma and work to help other young people afflicted by MS. For, she realised, there were areas where the victims could be productive even though they suffered from a chronic ailment.
Despite facing extreme loss and misfortune, Preeti continues to live her life vivaciously
She saw this as a God-sent opportunity and got immersed in the flow of the MS society work, putting in nearly 15 hours a day. “Every MS person was and is Ayesha for me,” she says with a smile, as she is gradually coming out of her grief. She has understood how to make people focus on what they can do and not on what they cannot. She feels that she has found a purpose in her life.
Make grief an opportunity to grow
Pulkit Sharma, spiritual psychotherapist, author, and writer, based in Puducherry, says, “Grief is not just a tragedy, it is an opportunity in disguise: Although loss of someone close shatters our world, the resultant grief is also an opportunity to question our superficial sense of attachment to the world and move towards an evolved stance. By holding on to this perspective with faith, we can cope with grief.”

BOX 1
Treating grief as a blessing
• Accept the situation. Flow with the cosmic plan and remember to relinquish control over
circumstances.
• Focus on areas where you could divert your attention.
• Listen to the stories of others also dealing with grief. This makes us realise we are not alone. Grief
indeed is something everyone has faced in one way or the other.
• When we need help, we need to be open to asking for it.
• Surrender to the divine will. It is the only way forward for all of us, and we need to remember that
the soul is always with us.
• We could use the following affirmations:
By remembering all loving memories that I have of the departed soul, I elevate my being from grief to joy.
By releasing the past, I allow myself to move upward.
Every day I am letting go of everything that has been holding me back.
Every day I ensure that I move away from the past.
• To heal, live life completely by freeing your soul and that of the departed one from the clutches of grief.
BOX 2
The Buddha and the mustard seed
A famous parable from the foundational texts of Theravada Buddhism is that of the mustard seed. It revolves around a woman named Kisa Gotami, who lived during the time of Buddha’s life.
Kisa’s only child, a very young son, had died. Unwilling to accept his death, she carried him from neighbour to neighbour and begged for someone to give her medicine to bring him back to life. One of her neighbours told her to go to Buddha, located nearby, and ask him if he had a way to bring her son back to life.
Bringing the body of her son with her, Kisa found Buddha and pleaded with him to help bring her son back to life. He instructed her to go back to her village and gather mustard seeds from the households of those who have never been touched by death. From those mustard seeds, he promised he would create a medicine to bring her son back to life. Relieved, she went back to her village and began asking her
neighbours for mustard seeds.
All of her neighbours were willing to give her mustard seeds, but they told her that their households had been touched by death. “The living are few, but the dead are many,” they said.
As the day became evening and then night, she was still without any of the mustard seeds that she had been instructed to collect. This made her realise the universality of death. With this new understanding, her grief was calmed. She buried her son in the forest and then returned to Buddha. She confessed to Buddha that she could not obtain any of the mustard seeds he had instructed her to collect because she could not find even one house untouched by death.
Kisa entered the first stage of enlightenment from her experience. She decided to become Buddha’s disciple and went on to become the first female arahant (enlightened one).

He recommends the following steps:
• Letting our feelings flow freely: We usually try to suppress our feelings of anger and pain, and that’s the primary reason why grief becomes complicated. We must remember that we have an innate power to heal, provided we allow the emotions to run their normal and natural course. Therefore, stop running away from your own feelings and let them flow freely. Eventually, there will be peace and hope.
• Finding meaning in our new reality: After the loss, our reality and identity changes; the way we define our world and ourselves goes through a big change, and we must find ways to adjust with it. We can easily cope with grief once we find meaning in our new reality. A client of mine whose daughter succumbed to cancer became a caregiver and an activist for cancer patients. This gave her a sense that all was not finished and that she could make a difference to the lives of so many people.
• Bonding with the Divine: Grief reminds us that the only permanent and constant relationship we can have in this world is with the Divine. Therefore, we need to immerse ourselves in the divine love and constantly surrender to the Divine. As our bond with the Divine strengthens, we are able to overcome feelings of grief.
Merging with the cosmos
The cosmos is, after all, our eternal home and it has a plan for all of us at various stages of our lives. After listening to everyone’s story, we certainly realise that the cosmos gives us the requisite strength when we need it. We
Pulkit Sharma believes that grief is an opportunity in disguise as it makes us question our long-held beliefs
only need to listen to it and follow its plan for us. For, the cosmos knows what is best for the evolution of our soul and, ultimately, this is what we need to embrace.
When this happens, whatever comes our way, however joyous or painful, we can accept it with equanimity as a blessing from the Divine and do the best we can do.
The soul is the only thing that we have and it is still with us even if it may not be with us in the mortal body. This is equally applicable for us as well as our loved ones. The love lives on forever, whether in our physical body or in our soul.
All we need to do is listen to the soul to transcend our grief.

AHA-MOMENTS
Tip of the iceberg
Megha Bajaj exhorts us to refrain from judging others and be patient and understanding in our relationships by cultivating empathy
A picture is worth needed strengthening herself. She them, changing them, as it is doing
a million words.
This one did for me something that long discourses and huge books have failed to. It also happened to come at a time when I am involved in writing several biographies about eminent people living holistic lives across the globe. The more I have interacted with all these people from different sectors, the further I have realised how little we know about people and how quick we
are to judge them.
The social media age complicates things even further because we suddenly have access to more information and believe we really know others when this is far from the truth.
I fell prey to this myself. I was
interacting closely with a person
on Facebook. She seemed to have
it all—the perfect life, the perfect
marriage, and kids who looked
like they had just stepped out
of Vogue Junior. Based on all I
could see about her life, I started
forming certain opinions about her
and even got into a partnership.
However, as time passed us by,
I realised how mistaken I was.
The one whom I believed would
be a source of strength to many, day, each experience is shaping
for us. Can we be a lot gentler and patient in our approach towards others, just the way we would want them to be towards us?
Another important realisation for me is about renewing perceptions. We feel someone is a certain way. We decide that they are that way. Days go by, months roll past, sometimes even years, and we still believe the person is what they used to be. Life has its own way of levelling each one of us. It has its own way of transforming us. What makes us think the other hasn’t undergone a metamorphosis just like we have?
It would be so much better to see others and ourselves as a flowing river rather than being cast in stone. That would allow us so much freedom to keep knowing, growing, and not get stuck with our own definitions.
Isn’t that so?
An award-winning author, film- script writer and poet, Megha is an eternal seeker at heart. She also empowers people to write and get published through her online writing workshop. You can read more on www. WonderofWords.org.

was more vulnerable than anyone I knew and needed help at many levels. It was then that I realised how much of our judgment of others is based on assumptions and how we really need to go in more slowly and gently with relationships to ensure it’s mutually nourishing for all.
Having experienced similar situations from the other end, when I have been questioned and judged by people who actually have no clue where I am coming from or what a day in my life is, I realised the immense need for all of us to create a much more patient and compassionate world.
That woman we just gossiped about at the PTM for her unkempt appearance could be the sole breadwinner for the family.
That man we labelled as ‘someone who just has it all’ might be nursing a chronically ill mother at home.
What do we know?
What do we really know?
Every person comes with a story to tell. Some parts are beautiful and frothy, others dark and gory. Each

Gift with love
Tired of receiving shoddy and thoughtless gifts, Shiivaani Mahajan discovers how receiving with dignity is as important as gifting with respect and consideration.
56 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

Gift. The very mention of the word I had grown up watching my parents
conjures images of glittering wrapping
sheets, satin ribbon bows, and an exciting surprise underneath that attractive packaging. But does reality always match the expectation? Have you ever been disheartened after untying the pack? Or have you always been a fortunate receiver?
There’s much more to gifting and receiving gifts than meets the eye. There is no denying the fact that it is the thought behind the gift that matters, for it reflects the heart, mind, and soul of the giver. I discovered this the hard way through exposure to the dynamics of gifting as a wife, a daughter-in-law, and, most importantly, a mother. A few bitter experiences were enough to nudge me into an introspective journey on the psychology of gifting. I soon realised the wilful ways of the world when people dumped thoughtless gifts on me and my children. There were times when close family and friends gifted us with fake gold bangles, a redundant tea set, a grimy bedsheet, a used sprout maker, trashy outfits, visibly used toys, and even expired edibles. I would be appalled and enraged by their impertinent behaviour.
Gifts that hurt
And what could be worse than the guest or friend bringing a token of love for one child, while callously ignoring the existence of the other! It tormented the mother in me and the dejected look on my child’s face filled me with vindictiveness towards the insensitive visitor. I would rather they not give anything to both my kids than commit this unpardonable act. And I must say it takes some audacity to break an innocent heart, just to save a few nickels.
gift generously to all our loved ones and acquaintances, sometimes even going beyond their means, without any ulterior motive or expectation from the other end. I still have vivid memories of my father refusing any favours and gifts he was offered as a bank manager in a small town called Kurukshetra, where I spent the formative years of my life. Every Diwali, creditors lined up outside our house with humongous boxes of dry fruits, exotic sweets, or expensive gadgets, but he warded them off with an annoyingly stern look on his face. My dad, a man of deep-rooted ethics, never compromised on his morals and principles for money, fame, or any other worldly pleasures of life. Thus, we learnt that life was all about giving, and giving to the best of your abilities with grace, love, and generosity. Little did I know that it was not a universal value.
Inner turmoil
But what we failed to learn was that receiving was an equally important aspect, that one should not accept or receive ill treatment in any form, and that it is not a sin to say ‘No’ to protect your self-respect and honour. And so, for years, I mutely and reluctantly kept accepting inferior, inconsiderate gifts that left me nonplussed. I would wonder: “What did I do to deserve this? Am I not valuable to them? Is it my financial status that decides the quality of my gift?” I oscillated between rage, self-pity, resentment, and eventually to forgiving the giver but never found a resolution or expressed my discontent, thanks to my timorous personality. Not that all my experiences left me dejected or heartbroken or that I was never showered with worthy gifts, but the agony was difficult to process when it

involved close friends and family. It felt like deception and sheer humiliation.
During a self-empowerment workshop, when I shared about this recurrent pattern in my life, the workshop leader asked me if I had self-esteem issues or if I always put myself on a lower pedestal than others. After initially resisting the idea, realisation dawned on me and I saw the truth of her perspective. Yes, I had always considered myself undeserving. While I would often sing praises of others’ talents and achievements, I would shove mine under the carpet. I connected the dots and inferred that everything happening to me was a clear reflection of my inner world, a world that comprised of meekness, sacrifice, poor self-image, and the need to please people.
Standing up for my dignity
Eventually, I came upon a two-fold plan to resolve this perennial occurrence in my life. One, I chose to stop radiating my unworthiness to the outer world and worked upon building my self-respect and esteem. Two, I decided to learn to say ‘NO’ to low-bred behaviour and refused to accept lousy gifts from people who foisted their unwanted stuff on me. I would not say that I have overcome my self-deprecation completely, but progress is definitely evident, and this inner shift had opened a flow of newfound abundance in my life.
Being a quintessential people’s person, I spend a lot of my time, energy, thought, money, and heart in choosing the right gift for every special person in my life. The task gets even more tedious when I have a shoestring budget, yet I will not settle for anything petty or shoddy for others. And rightly so. Gifting, for me, is about bringing joy in someone’s life, even if momentarily. It is about creating and
cherishing memories. It is an extension of the elemental emotions like love and joy. Priceless, yet pivotal for existence. And when a gift lacks this pure vibration or is given for the sake of giving, it can be clearly felt by the receiver, leading to anguish and resentment in their heart.
Rules of gifting
So, in order to protect myself from any such affliction, I have come up with my own set of rules on gifting, which could prove to be a foolproof method of choosing just the right stuff for others.
• I shall not buy for another, something that I consider below par for my own use.
• I shall not spend my time, energy, and money on people who persistently display an ungracious gifting attitude. I would rather give to the needy and the deprived, instead of kowtowing to affluent, penny-pinching friends and relatives.
• I shall politely, yet firmly, fend off distasteful gifts that will clutter my physical, emotional, and mental space.
• I shall choose gifts that the other person might never ever buy for themself for monetary reasons.
• If unclear about a person’s taste or choice, I shall present them with cash vouchers to avoid any disappointment later.
E V Lucas, in his essay The Unbirthday Present, came up with a golden rule of present-giving that will never fail. He said, “You must never give to another that which you would not rather keep for yourself, nothing that does not cost you a pang to part from.” And I second his philosophy wholeheartedly. Never ever pawn off gifts received from someone that you don’t want. If you did not like it, there is a chance
58 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

Gifts express love and it is the thoughtfulness behind the gift that matters, than the gift itself
that your recipient won’t like it either. Avoid buying crummy items on sale and dumping them
on others for the sake of it. You will surely gain a few dimes but lose the relationship due to your shortsightedness. In a nutshell, do not treat others as junkyards to get rid of something you dislike.
Gift with love
To support you in this endeavour, here are a few foolproof gifting ideas you can draw upon. A handloom or a silk saree or a stole, organic skincare products, a classy pair of earrings, and a lifestyle and apparel gift voucher are a few of the many things that can unfailingly light up a woman’s face. And men will usually be pleased to receive perfumes, leather wallets, car accessories, or casual clothing. As a mother of two, I have seen my kids shriek with excitement on finding trendy gadgets, delectable chocolates, bags, and cool
accessories inside the gift packs. Then there are some practical, useful gifts like aromatherapy sets, salt lamps, family portraits, plants and pots, bedsheets, music records, and crockery sets. These will never go out of fashion and have high durability too.
It is really not so much about the cost of the gift but the thoughtfulness behind it. A pack of succulent fruits, a box of scrumptious sweets, a heartfelt letter, a collage of pictures, a movie ticket, or a handmade piece of art wouldn’t be heavy on your pocket, but still have the power to enthral the receiver. Whether you are giving the gift of tradition, time, adventure, or experience, it is the connection between the receiver and the giver that is the real magic of being human.
Gifts are animate. They talk. And nothing can outdo the language of love. This Christmas, spread only love.

JOURNEY
Keep vibrating faith
What you think is what you manifest, affirms Shivi Verma. So watch the magic work when you think divine!
O ften, when I look back at The reality is that there is no and abundance and everything is
my life, I can observe a pattern.
The initial few years of my life were full of love, security, and acceptance. Emotional agitations were alien to me, and my health and academic performance were pretty good.
However, as time passed, I began to be subjected to severe criticism over being ‘different’ from the rest of the brood. My fondness for solitude, preferring books and animals to human companionship, and challenging traditional beliefs, made me the butt of jokes and ridicule.
The resultant effect was that my inner self fell completely out of sorts. I was filled with immense loathing, hopelessness, and negativity about myself. Consequently, my health and academic performance nosedived, and seemingly easy things too slipped out of my hands.
Thankfully, spiritual seeking entered quite early in my life, and for the first time, my faith in my path and myself could not be dislodged by anyone, no matter how hard they tried.
Slowly, as my meditations grew, secrets of happy living began to filter in my consciousness. The chimera of worldly existence was laid bare before me.
lack and everything is moving perfectly according to God’s plan, but our minds and egos make us believe differently. They create desires that are mixed with the fear and anxiety of not getting what we want. As a result, we spend our lives chasing one desire after another, only to see our most cherished dreams slide out of our hands.
Each and everything that I achieved, manifested, or failed to achieve was directly related to my state of mind. If I operated from fear, insecurity, agitation, or want, I was sure to push the goal further up. But the more I functioned from the space of knowing, confidence, and security, the more easily I manifested my wishes. Oftentimes, my gut feeling tells me that there is nothing to worry about, and I will get what I want. However, there are times when stress, nervousness, or anxiety enter my heart, and I quickly become alert that manifestation is a bit difficult right now.
Earlier I used to get into panic mode on encountering these feelings. However, recently, I have discovered that I have the power to change these feelings. Now, as soon as I experience worry, tension, and anxiety, I tell myself that this is not the truth. My real nature is calm, peace,
working out as per my wishes.
The biggest impact this thinking has is on my attitude. Just because things are not going my way, I do not lose my cool, judge, or take it out on others, including those who are giving me much cause for concern. I keep vibrating faith and confidence. What happens is that most often, what appears as deliberate misconduct on someone’s part reveals itself to be a play of circumstances. Thankfully, as I did not react with anger, I did not create bad blood or bad karma with the one who I felt was responsible for my problems. Not only that, my manifestation too comes into existence after some time.
I feel a frisson of joy to observe that just as judgment creates more judgement, faith and patience create more faith and goodwill in others. As for people with denser energies, just because I am choosing faith, confidence, and abundance, I often get removed from their space and find a better alternative. It pays to keep reminding yourself of your Divine nature and origin.

INFLUENCE
From NASA to VYASA!
Nandini Sarkar probes the mind of Dr H R Nagendra, the founder of a yoga institute, who has revolutionised the concepts of health and healing globally while miraculously treating innumerable terminally ill patients
62 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

T his is the Super 30 story of a brilliant Indian scientist turned rishi. Call it destiny or a chance encounter, our
meeting with the saint-scientist, Dr HR Nagendra, president, VYASA (Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana), was like a journey into thrilling space. Padma Shri Dr Nagendra is known as the yoga guru of our prime minister, Shri Narendra Modi. However, his contribution to the art of healing goes way beyond that. VYASA’s research on cancer and diabetes cure through yoga has won global recognition and funding. He also states that he has yogic cures for every possible disease. This ex-NASA rishi’s work has become the living Upanishads, to inspire modern man, who is suffering from so many harmful-lifestyle- induced diseases. My husband, Sushobhan, was introduced to Dr Nagendra by Professor Akhilesh, dean, Management Studies, IISc, Bengaluru. They were together at IIT Guwahati, at the invitation of the director, Dr Manjunatha, who plans to promote yoga there. Intrigued by the rishi-scientist’s pioneering research and impressed with his humility, Sushobhan decided to visit him at his Bengaluru VYASA campus. So, there we were, the very next month, sitting in a spacious verandah, waiting for Dr Nagendra. Monsoon winds blew all around us, keeping us cool. Large clusters of trees and vegetation kept our sights refreshed. Finally, in all-white attire, the curly-haired, soft-spoken, and unassuming HRN emerged from his private enclosure to greet us. He showed us a news clipping of the previous day, with the governor of Chandigarh at a yoga event and readily agreed to be interviewed for Life Positive magazine.
Could you tell us a little about your childhood? You are now 76 years old and the founder of this huge Vyasa university. Your research on the yogic cure of cancer, diabetes, and other diseases has received global recognition. Did you have a premonition that your life would be devoted to the cause of yoga?
If I go into flashback mode, right from my childhood, our family—especially my grandmother—was extremely patriotic. They wanted all the children and grand children to be devoted to the country. So we were brought up in such an atmosphere. My uncle HV Sheshadri was a gold medallist and had a very lucrative career. He gave it up for social service. He was the general secretary of the RSS, Karnataka, and inspired thousands of workers. An excellent writer, he received the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award. A great nationalist, a great writer, a great journalist, and a great organiser, he was my role model. He would keep speaking to us of the Bhagavad Gita. At age five, I started reading the verses and learning the Gita by heart. That’s how the whole thing happened. I didn’t understand it then, but because I was so inspired by him, so much in awe, I went on memorising the Gita. Later, when I was doing my doctorate at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a group of five of us used to meet and discuss the Gita. What is the real meaning of life? What is the objective of modern science? What should be the direction for modern technology? These were the fundamental questions.
In uence 63

At age five, I started reading the verses and learning the Gita by heart. That’s how the whole thing happened. I didn’t understand it then, but because I was so inspired by him, so much in awe, I went on memorising the Gita. Later, when I was doing my doctorate at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, a group of five of us used to meet and discuss the Gita.
How old were you then, Sir?
About 20 years old. At that time, I was also very fortunate to gain the company of the renowned scientist-philosopher A Satyanarayana Shastri, a wonderful perfectionist, a great professor of chemistry, and a great Sanskrit scholar. I have met Nobel Laureates but he was a genius and nobody was his equal in brilliance, creativity, and practicality. He focused on the Upanishads. Satyanarayan Shastri guided us to understand the inner state of the mind and the power of silence and calmness. I found such precious and vast amount of knowledge in him that I decided to start studying the original Upanishads. In 1968, I went abroad to start working at NASA. I had also decided that I would satisfy my intellectual curiosity by spending four to five years in the best foreign universities before coming back to India. But my intellect was satiated earlier than I thought, so I decided it was time to return.
So your NASA, Harvard, and other Western university experiences could not satisfy your hunger for knowledge. What was the turning point when you decided to change direction, from science to spirituality?
I saw that Western learning is limited only to the physical world. In 1975–1976, people thought that they had understood everything about the physical world and there was nothing more to be understood. But then came the big breakthrough book by Fritjof Capra, The Turning Point: Science, Society, and the Rising Culture. That book sold in millions during that time. He traced the development of science from the time of Newton and said it was inadequate to guide human behaviour and policy with regard to modern technology and ecology. He said that society needs to develop the concepts and insights of holism to solve its complex problems. I was 23 when I went abroad to see the best of things in the world, but I was not satisfied. Capra’s book germinated the seed that had been planted in childhood. It was time to come back to study the Upanishads.
Once you were back in India, how was the seed for VYASA sown?
My house in Bengaluru was near the Ramakrishna Mission. I used to go there and meditate. I read the complete works of Vivekananda. He inspired me like none other.
Professor Akhilesh told us you have experimental labs here where people are asked to sit in meditation and you connect them to electro-magnetic waves to study auras and brain waves?
Yes, at that time, my objective was to measure prana (life force) and see the koshas. The

Upanishads state that every one of us has five bodies or koshas, each made of increasingly finer grades of energy. I studied the Kirlian photography developed by the Russians to see auras. Today, this is also called GDV testing, which stands for gas discharge visualization. It can show you the chakras (energy centres) as well as the pranic imbalance in every organ and system in the body. It’s a very wonderful thing and supports the Upanishadic claim of koshas.
So if VYASA has found the answer to chakra and pranic imbalance, how do you plan to get this across to modern medical science? Don’t you think an institute like AIIMS in Delhi, which caters to more than 10,000 OPD patients a day, would benefit from your research?
I work for the world. In India, we work closely with the Ayush Ministry and there is great interest in yoga in various state governments.
The Houston, Texas, Cancer Center is one of the biggest in the world. We introduced yoga there and produced some good research papers. We gave customised yoga to 600 patients of breast cancer, apart from the normal cancer treatment. Yoga, pranayama (yogic breathing) and meditation practices are tailor-made by us, depending on what sort of cancer a person has or at what stage of cancer the person is in.
So what is the success rate you have experienced Sir, in curing cancer through yogic practices?
Let me share an interesting example. The Bangalore Cancer Institute sent a cancer patient to VYASA. He had such a big hard tumour jutting out of his throat, he couldn’t even swallow his food. He had a tube inserted in his throat and was fed on liquids. They gave him three months to live and asked him to die peacefully at VYASA, listening to lectures on

yoga. We showed him his koshas and put him on a customised yoga-pranayama-energisation- relaxation-meditation plan. He was surprised to know that he had five bodies and that he would actually never die. In fifteen days, his tubes were removed and he started eating on his own. In about a month’s time, when the director of the Cancer Institute was scheduled to visit VYASA, we asked him to stand at the gate and surprise the man. Needless to say, the director was shocked out of his wits! The man smilingly asked the director to join him for lunch and showed him how he could swallow food on his own. The director asked the man to come back for a biopsy. The report showed that the tumour had shrunk and from the earlier hard, rock-like mass, it had become very soft. The doctor asked permission to operate the remaining tumour but the man refused, saying that he was no longer afraid of death and did not care about the tumour any more. Within a few more months of yogic practices and lifestyle, his tumour disappeared, never to come back. Through yoga and Upanishadic wisdom, he had discovered the root cause of cancer. So, it could not come back to afflict him. He lived for another 20 years without any fear and finally passed away at 83. Today, you have radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery; everything is being looked at from the physical body viewpoint, but the root cause is not researched. That’s why even people who get an early diagnosis of cancer are not cured. Every day, a billion cells get created and a billion cells get destroyed in the body. Unless your mind is turned inward and is aware of the root cause of disease, the body is unable to create good health.
So, in your experience of handling cancer patients, what was the minimum time
Today, you have radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery; everything is being looked at from the physical body viewpoint, but the root cause is not researched. needed to change the root cause, i.e., beliefs, lifestyle, and other factors?
The root cause issue is discussed in a few lectures, maybe three lectures. Then, to actualise that takes time. Stress suppresses the immune system, making it lose its capacity, and, therefore, has to be reduced through deep relaxation. That’s what we do in yoga and deep relaxation of the system. We have developed special modules for that. It’s basically an inner treatment.
How long do you keep your patients here? Does it depend on how soon they accept what you’re telling them?
Normally, intelligent people will understand it in one lecture. Cancer patients come as residents and stay here for at least a week or 10
In uence 67

days. How long they stay here depends on the severity of their condition.
How can yoga help cure diabetes?
In diabetes, the immune system sees insulin as an enemy, unlike cancer, where it sees the cancerous cell as a friend, so it sends a signal to the pancreas to stop producing insulin, creating a big immune barrier. So whether it’s cancer or diabetes or any other disease, the body needs to be put on a DNA repair mechanism. The diabetes incidence rate in India is becoming bigger than that in China. Five years from now, we are going to become the diabetes capital of the world. So what can be done to prevent it? We took up a study in 60 districts covering 2.5 lakh people.
How did your association with Prime Minister Modi come about?
Through my uncle Sheshadri and the RSS. I admire him more than anybody else. I have seen him since 1983. How he has evolved! Today, no one is his guru; everyone can learn from him. His memory, meticulousness, untiring energy, and love for the country is unparalleled. I have met many politicians but none like him. He is a statesman. Even I cannot match him.

In India, we have so many gods and goddesses with different attributes. We pick one whose qualities we identify with. Unfortunately, our education system doesn’t know how to deal with our emotions.
Lastly, do you feel love for God?
My aunt lived here at VYASA in her last years. She used to chant Ram-Nama continuously. She used to go into bhava and claim that Rama visited her every night. I am very influenced by Swami Vivekananda. In India, we have so many gods and goddesses with different attributes. We pick one whose qualities we identify with. Unfortunately, our education system doesn’t know how to deal with our emotions. When we encounter different types of challenges, problems, and failure, we can lose our way, commit suicide, or get into depression. The trick for controlling this is called bhakti yoga, the science of sublimation.

MUDRAS
Soorya Mudra
As we have seen, in Mudra Shastra, our five fingers represent
the Five Elements.
These Elements are Agni (Fire),
Vaayu (Air), Aakash (Space), Prithvi (Earth) and Jal (Water), starting from the thumb towards the little finger. Amongst these, Fire is the Element which regulates the other four. It is the authority. The balancing (increasing and decreasing) of the Elements other than Fire is done by the Fire Element. This is achieved either by connecting the tip of the thumb to the tip or the base of a finger or by connecting the tip of a finger to the base of the thumb.
But then, how do we regulate the Fire Element?
We mistakenly consider the Water Element as the opposite of the Fire Element, but it is not so. Prithvi is the opposite of Fire. If one wants to increase the Fire element, they should reduce the Earth Element and vice versa.
Soorya Mudra is the tool for increasing the Fire Element as it reduces the Earth Element.
Abhaykumar Shah shows us how to regulate the Fire Element with the practice of Soorya Mudra
Soorya is the Sanskrit word for Sweat throws out the toxins in
the sun. How to form Soorya Mudra:
Connect the tip of the ring finger to the root of the thumb. Put the thumb on the back of the ring finger and press gently. Keep the remaining three fingers comfortably straight. Rest the back of the palms either on the knees or on the thighs.
Benefits:
The element Agni plays a role in maintaining the body temperature at a particular degree. This temperature is essential for keeping the metabolism running. Soorya Mudra increases the heat, which accelerates the speed of the metabolism. As an effect of this acceleration:
• Low appetite gets cured.
• Loss of hunger is cured.
• The problem of indigestion is solved.
Regular practice of Soorya Mudra is one of the answers to the problem of constipation. 10 minutes of Soorya Mudra, 15 minutes prior to meals, results in very good digestion. If the body temperature goes down below normal, Soorya Mudra is the instrument to increase it. When one has to be in heavy air conditioning or in a cool place where the cold is intolerable, Soorya Mudra has the ability to increase the body heat.
our body. Some people have a tendency of not sweating enough. It is abnormal. Soorya Mudra increases heat, enlarges the pores on the skin, produces sweat, and thus the toxins are managed by their elimination through sweat.
Slow metabolism, many a time, is caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Soorya Mudra is a good treatment to increase the activity of the thyroid gland.
Increased Prithvi (Earth) element in the body increases the weight and the mass of the body. Regularly performing Soorya Mudra arrests the rate of weight gain. It is an effective device to fight against obesity.
Lowered body temperature converts the fluids in the body into phlegm. This phlegm blocks the spaces within the sinuses, respiratory tract, and lungs. It causes breathing discomfort, leading to asthma. Soorya Mudra, by increasing the heat of the body, elevates the fluidity of the mucus and clears the blocked spaces.
Tuberculosis and pleurisy can be handled with the help of Soorya Mudra.
Abhaykumar Shah is a mechanical engineer, who has learnt Mudra Shastra from experts and established his own method of using this science correctly, and in the modern context. abhayshah. [email protected]

HEALTH AND FITNESS
Floating to stay t
SD Saxena introduces us to Jal Yoga, in which the practitioner performs various asanas on the water surface. This form of yoga is especially a boon for the disabled and weak.
72 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

Y oga is a fusion of body, mind, and soul. The Bhagavad
The Indian tradition of yoga dates back
to almost a millennium and has been a source of tremendous personal and individual growth for human beings living across the Indus river and the region beyond the Himalayan range.
India led a peaceful existence due to the geographical protection and isolation from the rest of the world. This was one of the reasons for the development of the mind-body-spirit culture in India as well as the major growth of human-centric philosophy. It is a matter of great surprise and research to unravel the fact that despite little development of analytical science, Indian philosophers were able to arrive at the concepts of Advaita (the oneness of human souls), superconsciousness, and also the soul being the eternal entity, never to die, and that the death of a body does not signal the end of everything.
Union of body, mind, soul
Yoga is a practical manifestation of that philosophy. For many philosophers of India, physical wellness is driven by the inner well- being of the soul and the mind, and, therefore, requires a fusion of the whole ecosystem of body, mind, soul, and nature. There is a major emphasis on the various forms and stages of yoga defined as Kriya Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga, to achieve the higher stages of this fusion of mind, body, and soul.
The Gita describes a lot of these concepts. The attainment of higher stages of this fusion is very difficult to achieve. As you go higher up in Ashtanga Yoga, the numbers of achievers keep declining due to the difficulty of achieving success on the slippery path of practice. Out of a million who achieve an upgrade from stage one to two, the scale keeps reducing the number of achievers and, ultimately, the one who reaches the top is almost one in a trillion.
Difficult to practise
Ashtanga Yoga has eight stages, the ultimate being samadhi, in which the yogi merges with the ultimate and becomes one with the superconsciousness. The practice of yoga, therefore, is a difficult task and attainments are far and few. Nevertheless, the yogis try and pursue this slippery path throughout their lifetime, and one life is not enough to reach the highest goal. In fact, the process may last many life cycles of the practitioners. Mercifully, Indian philosophy and the concept of rebirth grants a practitioner many lifetimes to achieve it.
Kriya Yoga, and more appropriately Hatha Yoga, is the first ladder to achieve the ultimate, but nevertheless an important part of the process which has to be gone through. It is also interesting to note that in the case of a few achievers, the process is much faster compared to others. It is said that Buddha, Krishna, and Jesus attained the highest level of yoga in a
Health and Fitness 73

comparatively shorter span of one lifetime, whereas many take much longer to achieve it.
Yoga and human consciousness
On a more simplistic plane, yoga, as is being popularised internationally, lays more emphasis on the physical health of the practitioner. Yogic exercises are many and the idea is to activate hormonal activities and the muscular well-being of the body by twisting and turning the muscles. In addition, the practice of pranayama (yogic breathing) is quite unique as it brings out the important aspect of providing fresh air and oxygen to the body and various ways to activate the nervous system, especially the three energy channels (nadis) called Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna in yogic parlance. The science of human breath is very well decoded by the Indian yogis, and they extensively used the techniques developed to perfection over a period of time. There are recorded incidences where yogis have been observed to stop breathing and survive for days together without food and air. In some cases they were buried underground and, later on, when unearthed, were found to be hale and hearty without any loss of well-being. These facts are more along the lines of stories than recorded scientific facts, but it is also true that many yogis are found to live longer and in much better health conditions when compared to people not doing yoga on a regular basis.
Yogic exercises have a lot to do with human consciousness.
Yoga in its ultimate form through meditation brings the experiences of the practitioners quite close to this reality. The stories of many enlightened masters and their control of the events and futuristic predictions are a matter of discussion, but it is also true that the influence of some of these masters on the lives of many
foreign students is exemplary. The best example is that of Steve Jobs, who became a disciple of Neem Karoli Baba and was inspired in the art of out-of-the-box thinking. Although it may not be proper to credit India with the ideas he developed for changing the world, it is also a factor which cannot be ignored.
Special considerations for the weak
Doing yoga is a strenuous process. Also, in old age, a lot of complications arise which create complications of the muscles, knees, and heart. Yoga teachers always emphasise these facts as a disclaimer before the beginning of any session of yoga. Special care is taken in those cases where the person is a cardiac patient or is suffering from high blood pressure.
Jal yoga
Yoga has many variants, one of which is Jal Yoga practised by many yogis in the past. They found the tranquil surface of a pond or a lake (found in abundance in those days) to be much more convenient to carry out yogic exercises than on a lawn or on the ground. The beauty of the water surface and its buoyancy is that the body loses weight and the yogi is virtually floating. Under such conditions, the turning and twisting of the body becomes a lot easier and far less energy is consumed. However, there is one condition to this exercise: the performer must be able to swim and float on the water surface.
Yogis were especially fond of doing more complex postures, including pranayama, which require special efforts. There are a number of exercises which are practised on the water surface and underwater. In a number of hospitals in Germany, people with muscular injuries are treated in a swimming pool by helping them carry out exercises which they are unable to perform on a hard surface. One of
74 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

the most famous examples is that of the hockey player Kartar Singh, who was accidentally injured by a policeman in a train compartment. His injuries were such that he was completely written off by the doctors. On being financed by the IHB, he went to Germany and regained his normal health, especially through hydraulic exercises.
Gaining popularity
Jal Yoga is now becoming a reality as, besides the community swimming pools, many private swimming pools have come up in India, especially in the gated communities. It can also be practised in the rural and semi-urban settings where many waterbodies still exist in these areas. Jal Yoga is a tool to transform the health of senior citizens, the physically handicapped, as well as those who find it difficult to exercise in the normal gravity environment.
Asanas (yogic postures) on the water surface It is important that the student is not afraid of entering the water and taking a position of flotation and also of diving in the water. The knowledge of swimming is a prerequisite for practising Jal Yoga. The techniques are simple, but first, the practitioner will have to overcome the fear of drowning.
Shava Asana (Corpse Asana)
Itis one of the most important asanas for relaxation. This asana provides tremendous relaxation to body, mind, and spirit. It is used in Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) for attaining quick relaxation of mind and body before going to sleep. It has been reported that good practitioners are able to reduce the sleep span remarkably well by using this asana effectively.
Shava Asana is one of the most useful asanas for the elderly, and if carried out on the surface

of still water, can help in achieving remarkable results. It can lift you to a different level of awakening in the yogic realm. It is said that many yoga gurus practised this to attain deep meditation and a very high level of relaxation. This deep asana helps in attaining a state of meditation much faster as well as a higher level of consciousness.
To practise this posture, lie down in the pool with your face towards the sky and keep your arms stretched by the side of the body. Try to breathe normally and to balance your body on the water surface in such a manner that it does not move up and down on the surface. This is easy to achieve once you have mastered the art of floating on the water surface. The body loses its weight and it is a very divine feeling where

Try to feel the consciousness of the body in various organs starting from the brain to the throat down to the abdomen and to the feet and then reverse the order upto the brain. This helps in achieving a calmness which can only be experienced by the performing of this asana. Sometimes, it so happens that the heartbeat and the breathing sound starts interfering with your calmness and appears a little irritating. Learn to ignore these sounds and concentrate on the body calmness.
Reverse Corpse Asana
In this asana, lie down with your face in the water and observe the bottom of the pool. The blue of the water gives a very soothing effect to your eyes, enhances the vision, and soothes the nerves. This asana can be carried out for a few minutes or as per your capacity, as in this posture, breathing disturbs the calmness of the posture.
Uttanpada Asana
This posture is very easily performed on the hard ground. Lie down on the water face up and float easily on the surface of the water. Lift your right leg and hold it above the water surface and keep it up for one minute. Slowly, bring it down, relax, and then do the same with your left leg. This posture requires a little bit of concentration as the body tends to sink below the water surface as the buoyancy decreases.
Another variant of this asana can be the quick movement of both legs which balances the body on the surface of the water, at the same time giving all the advantages of Uttanpada Asana.
Surya Namaskar
This asana is the king of all the asanas and is a mix of many asanas combined. It is difficult to perform on the surface of the water as it requires a hard surface. This is true especially
76 LifePositive | DECEMBER 2019

in old age as it requires the bending of knees and under full gravity, it may be harmful.
A modified version of this asana can be performed on the surface of the water by bringing the hands up while standing in the water, bending the hands backward, bringing the hands down, and then holding the boundary of the pool bending the head towards the sky and bending the right knee. This process is repeated in reverse order to complete the cycle of this asana.
Tada Asana
It is very easy to perform this asana in the water. Stand upright in the water and lock the fingers of the two hands. Slowly lift the arms up. Keep the feet firmly on the bottom of the pool and try to stand on the toes. In the water, it is very easy to perform as the water buoyancy helps in extending this pose for long. The pose is very useful for the knee joints and for strengthening the calf muscles.
Bhadra Asana
Stand firmly in the water. Stretch the arms above the water surface. Bend the right knee and turn towards the right by bending. Return to the normal standing position. Bend the left knee and turn your face towards the left and bend at the same time turning the left feet in the left direction. Come back to the upright position.
There are many other asanas which can be performed on the water surface with amazing results. Jal Asana can be a boon to people with muscular weakness and old age.
Cycling
Cycling in the water is a very easy exercise. It can be performed either by holding the wall of the pool and cycling in an upright position or else by cycling while lying down with the face upwards. While cycling, it is essential that the legs are first moving clockwise and then in anticlockwise direction.
There are many other asanas which can be performed on the water surface with amazing results. Jal Asana can be a boon to people with muscular weakness and old age.

SPIRIT
Size matters
Suma Varughese traces her evolution from Lilliputian to Gulliver
I f you see problems, with Gulliver. But tortoise-like, Instead of being fearful about
people, or the unknown
as bigger than you, you give away your power to them. If you see yourself as bigger than these factors, you rise in your own power.
And the difference between the two states is the difference between day and night. I should know because I am transitioning from one to the other. When I first started the process almost three decades back, I saw myself as tiny, a mere Lilliputian. In my tiny Lilliputian eye, events, situations, people, and everything else loomed huge and intimidating. You can imagine how little power I had within me.
I was almost constantly in a state of panic and helplessness, absolutely with no confidence in my ability to combat this big scary project called ‘life.’ At that time, my life force was but a flickering match light. Just coping with the motions of living took all my energy, forget about envisaging or realising dreams.
I stayed with my quest, and at the moment of writing this, I have almost become a full-scale Gulliver. Panic has almost totally left, while fear and helplessness are (hopefully) packing their bags. I am confident of my ability to cope with the vicissitudes of life, and I am slowly finding myself getting to that exhilarating space where challenges become opportunities and no one and nothing seems to be able to get me down.
These days, when I get an occasional snub, I refuse to slink away with my tail between my legs. I stay with the conversation until it is complete in my view. When setbacks occur in relationships or work, I refuse to fold like an accordion. Instead, I continue to play my music, regardless of whether there is anyone to hear me play.
Illness used to fill me with panic and anxiety because it was usually brought on by my eating the wrong food, and I simply had no control over what I put in my mouth. But this too has been changing, and for the first time, quite recently, I found myself refusing to cave in to my fears
what I ate or of even fearing to step out into the rain, I decided I was not going to let anything cramp my style and that health was my true nature and, therefore, more powerful than the temporary illness. Whether this will last I am not sure, but to be able to rout my fear so decisively is a wonderful experience, even if it proves to be a passing one.
In the old days, any adverse human contact left a dent in my self-image. Now, there is a new elasticity, a robust resilience that enables me to spring back as good as new. The journey can be described in many ways—as a journey of achieving self-esteem or of building and subsequently dissolving the ego. I see it as a journey of winning back my own power. As I grow more powerful within myself, everything else diminishes in size and potency. Why sweat the small stuff?

As I began to work on myself,
bit by the tiniest bit, I grew in
proportion to the outside world.
I was no longer a Lilliputian,
though it certainly took me a
long weary while to catch up and anxieties.

POSITIVE FOCUS
Art of Manifesting
Do you believe that our thoughts have power and they can create our reality ? Do you believe in magic and that miracles do happen?
Like with the Law of Attraction, a Manifestation is where your thoughts and your energy can create your reality. If you are constantly being negative and feeling low, then you are going to attract and manifest negative energy. Hence it is very important to think positive.
How does it work ?
We all are nothing but energies, made up of atoms, protons, electrons and neutrons. Our thoughts also have energy and it can travel. When we work with focused intention, then our thoughts magnify and this can manifest itself into reality. It is said that when we do positive affirmations and write them down in present tense, then the chances of it to become real increases to 50%. This is because our subconscious mind is always listening and it just acts upon it. It has to act upon what we say and think about.
When we visualize something, then the chances increases more than 50%. The reason behind this is the brain waves. When we visualize, our brain waves slow down to alpha brain wave which is very relaxing. The subconscious mind starts opening up. But the chances increase to the maximum when our brain waves slow down to theta brain waves. Theta brain wave makes our subconscious completely awakened and whatever we say or think goes directly to the subconscious mind at a deepest level. Then that becomes a reality.
I have seen my so many instant manifestations. I think of having some particular food and it appears in front of me instantly. I have seen my life changing and transforming. This has been possible after connecting with the Creator on 7th plane in Theta Healing. Theta Healing is a deep meditation which opens up your chakras and psychic centers and takes the kundalini energy up the spine and out of the crown chakra
to connect with the Creator on the 7th plane.
In Theta, our thoughts magnify. Our subconscious opens up and with the help of Creative force we can look deeply within our blocks and limiting beliefs and release them and replace with positive ones.
One of my student did manifestation using theta and she won the court case which had been pending for so many years.
I have seen relationships transforming, foreign trips materializing, money appearing, diseases disappearing and many more.
One thing we need to be sure of is that you can manifest only for yourself and not for others. You cannot make someone love you. Free will is very important and one must respect it.
Some important tips for Manifestation-
• Know what you want
• Think positive
• Write your wishes in present tense
• Visualize your dream in theta state
•Know your limiting beliefs that block your
manifestations and work on them
•Live in Gratitude because the energy of
Gratitude creates the energy of Plentitude.
• Never want anything. Want means lack energy.
Instead say I already have it
Sometimes we see that we do a lot yet it doesn’t manifest. This is because of our divine timing. We all have divine timings which we created before we took birth in this lifetime. When the divine time comes everything will happen easily and smoothly. By working on your beliefs you can even move the divine timing.

My life has been an interesting series of manifestations. It is an art which anyone can learn and apply. So are you ready to manifest your dreams ? Are you willing to Manifest ?

Generally, astrology is seen as an ancient Vedic science, which does not accommodate the free will of an individual. Events happen strictly according to the predictions of the astrologer. Thus astrology is projected as a very restrictive science that is in denial of an individual wanting to act according to his discretion. Well, the truth is that astrology can help make you a conscious builder of your life. The tenth house in your horoscope very much acknowledges the presence of your karma. It acknowledges the power of humans to redesign their lives. Astrology is a suggestive map for the
future on the basis of your past actions, but if your fervour is strong and you are determined, you can change your course of action.
Healing is empowering and its modalities bring us more awareness and make us stand in unison with our present. Healing represents possibilities for correcting the course occuring from our past actions.
When an healer prescribes healing modalities like Reiki, Merlin, Lama Ferra, etc., they work on various levels, namely, physical ailments, mental chaos, emotional issues, or financial troubles. Astrology is
divine guidance and healing is a divine creator of possibilities for expansion. Both are nurturing, harmonious, and complement each other. They are not separate but two sides of the same coin. In rituals for conducting healing modalities, we give due importance to material, preparation, and place, thus facilitating the whole process with ease.

Lessons from trash
I have often stumbled upon this truth: “If one is willing to learn, one can learn even from trash.”
During one of my cleaning sprees, I was carefully segregating the e-waste and had a few old CDs in my hand. Just then, the kids came running and were curious to know what I was playing with. After my lecture about e-waste and trash (am I not supposed to use every opportunity to educate them about something!), I just held up a CD and asked them a simple question, “ What do you
see? “ I got different answers. One saw a blank CD, another saw a scratch on it, whereas the third one saw rainbow colours.
Isn’t it awesome! They wanted to know who was correct, and I said that all of them were right. Isn’t it the same about life? Only the perception matters. Whether we want to see life as dull and meaningless, cruel and worthless, or full of excitement and fun, curious to learn, it all depends on our perception alone. What you believe will be true for you. It need not be the
truth for another.
So what do you choose to see? It is only your choice that matters. Do you want to see rainbow colours? Then choose that and create a colourful life.
After the discovery of perception about life from a blank CD, I rescued a few from the trash and decorated our wall, to constantly remind us to choose our perceptions. Now, go back to the beginning and read. Yes, even from trash, lessons can be learnt.

Cleansing the mind
by Rita Soman
According to psychiatry, a lot of mental disorders are due to chemical imbalances generated during emotional struggle. It is a ‘what came first, the chicken or the egg?’ question. Do you have chemical imbalances that make you bipolar or are your chemical imbalances created by your emotional instability?
Turmoil created by the past
People who are bipolar have three main major mood upheavals: they go through phases of depression, elation, and anger or irritation, which are cyclical in nature. Someone who is depressed has underlying issues with guilt, shame, low self-esteem, and abandonment. People who are irritable also have issues that can be traced back to their formative years when they faced shame, neglect, or guilt. Hence, their thoughts usually trigger a manic, agitated state, interspersed with a euphoric, elated state. They may also carry within themselves a deeply embedded sense of superiority over others and, perhaps, narcissistic self-entitlement.
The solution
“The secret to life is ‘belief.’ Our beliefs—and not our genes—control our lives. PSYCH-K® is a set of simple, self-empowering techniques to change the beliefs and perceptions that impact your life at a cellular level,” says Bruce Lipton, PhD, cellular biologist.
PSYCH-K®, developed by psychotherapist Robert M Williams, is a popular and effective system for creating changes at the subconscious level. PSYCH-K® goes deep down to the root of all embedded labels and messages that cause people to flip into these different states. It is a simple, direct, and verifiable process. It utilises
the mind and body interface of muscle testing (kinesiology) to access the self-limiting files of the subconscious mind and changes negative self- definitions of past traumas. It takes permission from the superconscious mind to ensure that the person’s stated goals are safe and appropriate.
This process takes you right to the source of the problem in the subconscious mind, which generates 95 to 99 per cent of involuntary behavioural and biological activities. When you use PSYCH-K®, you go back to the core and build your self-esteem, and eliminate any traumas and abandonment issues from your childhood. When you neutralise the charge at such a deep level, the debris of your past clears away and you operate from a stable emotional level.
Works where medicines can’t
The PSYCH-K® process creates a ‘whole-brain’ state, which allows you to tap into your core self-definitions and change them. This is done with a series of new suggestions and definitions. These are similar to post-hypnotic suggestions where new definitions replace the old ones. This process aligns your subconscious mind with your conscious desire to succeed in life and be happy. PSYCH-K® is a way to cut through all the stuff that therapy and medication can’t reach. It is an energising experience. In a matter of just a few sessions, you can begin to permanently eliminate old programming that holds you back and keeps you stuck in illness.
The author is an addiction treatment specialist for the last 26 years and an internationally certified PSYCH-® instructor and facilitator based in Oregon, USA.

is an insight. Before the insight is a seeking. Beyond the seeking is a struggle. But in the deep dark origins of human pain, perhaps an illness, a helplessness, a self-destructive
despondency, is the singularly unique path forg
own original compassionate energies to help us transcend our most debilitating weaknesses. Further down this path of letting go of our fundamental darkness, we become the lighter beings of light we were always meant to be.
Suma Varughese’s long awaited second volume of life’s insights chronicles a universally human journey into the light. In a world of spiritual hares and tortoises, no one is left behind and the nishing line is an ever-shifting beckoning to rise
to our own incredible potential.
Each of us embodies an emotional baggage of sanskars (personality traits) and karmic accounts not only of this lifetime, but of many births. These are deep rooted rejections, doubts, low self-esteem, insecurities, which we will carry forward with us into our next birth, unless we let go now. Suma’s wisdom and personal experiences touch the soul and help us to start unpacking. She inspires us to start loving ourselves and then letting go becomes easy. Travelling Lighter, in our hands as a book today, will very soon become our natural way of being and living.

REVELATIONS
It’s a beautiful world
Sundaram Speaks:
Conversations to Awaken Your Soul’s Wisdom
Author: Hitesh Vashistha Publisher: Adhyyan Books Pages: 173
366
Shivi Verma
Achieving happiness is considered to be a human being’s ultimate aim, and plenty of books, discourses, and articles have been dedicated to this human pursuit.
However, what if there is a higher and nobler aim to human existence? As the New Age seems to be gaining ground, subtler and more refined knowledge is gradually entering our lives through young and evolved spiritualists of the modern generation. The book Sundaram
Speaks by Hitesh Vashishtha (a healer, meditator, and past life regression therapist trained under Dr Newton and Lakshmi Kondaveti) talks about how cultivating the ability to see beauty, completion, and perfection in a dualist world is a much higher attainment than happiness.
Sundaram (which means ‘beauty’), the entity channelled by Hitesh during his 3 a.m. to 5 a.m. meditations in 2018, is an androgynous energy which is a combination of the consciousness of Maa Kali, Dattatreya Bhagwan, and Mahavatar Babaji.
Sundaram teaches Hitesh how beauty lies in the purpose of everything and everyone that has been created. Anything that has been brought to life is beautiful because it is encoded with the potential to raise the consciousness of the entire existence. He urges people to have a heart for darkness as they walk towards the light. And even though they seem different from the outside, both have a common centre. At its core like light, darkness’s purpose is to nudge you towards the light within. A true seeker will learn
to see and appreciate beauty even in the most undesirable things. With less judgment, the hold of darkness on a person loosens, and everything gets bathed in its pure, resplendent, and divine glow. As you grow in this awareness, everything becomes part of the infinite grace you have been blessed with in your life.
In the forthcoming chapters, Sundaram enlightens us about the concepts of time and space and how they play out in various dimensions above and below the earth. Sundaram also reveals the kind of life that is lived by beings on planes higher than earth. A dimension where all is aglow with beauty, perfection, seamlessness, and divinity.
These and many other hitherto unknown realities of the Universe are softly and tenderly revealed in the book, giving the reader the uncanny feel that they are being lovingly whispered to, instead of reading the text. Sundaram Speaks is one of the priceless gifts of the Divine to the human race and has the power to transform the consciousness of the reader.

7 Mindsets for Success, Happiness and Fulfilment: Unlock Your Immense Potential by Changing The Way You Think

Shivi Verma
It’s no secret that God has given us the free will to create the life of our dreams. However, optimising the power of free will to create a life which matches our deepest aspirations is something most of us fail at.
And this is simply because we do not know how to harness our thoughts and feelings in a way that they lead us to our
cherished goals. Swami Mukundananda (author of 7 mindsets for Success, Happiness and Fulfillment, an alumnus of IIT and IIM, and a world-renowned spiritual teacher) has practically written a treatise on character building. For success, happiness, and fulfilment are the results of right attitude, perspective, and a belief system— which eventually build the character of an individual.
He breaks these attitudes into seven mindsets to illustrate how carefully constructing the edifice of our lives on the principles of self-work can give us everlasting peace, joy, and contentment:
• The mindset of positive thinking.
• The mindset of taking responsibility for our emotions. • The mindset of inspiration.
• The mindset of purity of intention.
• The mindset of cultivating knowledge.
• The mindset of discipline.
• The mindset of growing in the face of problems.
Each of these segments has been discussed in detail and eventually linked to spirituality, as without making the Divine a part of these endeavours, it becomes a colossal feat to accomplish.
One of the premises of the book which impressed me greatly is that the mind can be trained to experience in abundance whichever virtue it desires to perfect, without depending on external factors. Quoting his own example, Swami Mukundananda shares how, while trying to master public speaking on the Puranas and Upanishads, he was faced with the problem of not having an audience. When he approached his guru Swami Kripaluji Maharaj to help him get a few listeners, the latter said, “My child, lack of inspirstion originates from within and can be eradicated from within as well.” Swamiji understood the import of his message and learnt to deliver lectures before trees, sheep, irrigation canals, and even a blank wall with full passion, conviction, and vigour. A practice that holds him in good stead even before a teeming audience.
Anyone with a tendency to fool themselves by giving numerous excuses will either hate this book or make it their personal Bible.

TEACHING STORY
CHANGING OUR VISION
Once, a wealthy man was bothered by severe eye pain. He consulted many physicians and medical experts, consumed heavy loads of drugs, and was given hundreds of injections. But the ache persisted with more vigour than before.
At last, a monk who was supposed to be an expert in treating such patients was called for by the suffering man. The monk understood his problem and said that for some time he should concentrate only on green colours and not let his eyes fall on any other colours. It was a strange prescription, but he was desperate and decided to try it.
The millionaire got together a group of painters and purchased barrels of green paint and directed that every object his eye was likely to fall on, be painted green, just as the monk had suggested. When the monk came to visit him after a few days, the millionaire's servants ran with buckets of green paint and poured it on him since he was in red dress, lest their master see any other colour and his eye ache would come back. Hearing this, the monk laughed and said, "If only you had purchased a pair of green spectacles, worth just a few dollars, you could have saved these walls and trees and pots and all other articles as well as a large share of your fortune. You cannot paint the world green."
If we change our vision, the world will appear accordingly. It is foolish to shape the world; instead, we should change ourselves first.

THIS, I KNOW
• Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.
• Through perseverance, many people win success out of what seemed destined to be certain failure.
•Man is not the creature of circumstances; circumstances are the creatures of men. We are free agents, and man is more powerful than matter.
• We are all born for love. It is the principle of existence and its only end.
• Circumstances are beyond human control, but our conduct is in our own power.
• What is earnest is not always true; on the contrary, error is often more earnest than truth.
• The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches but to reveal to him his own.

INSPIRATION
DECIDE TO DREAM
Decide to widely open the gates
Of your wonderful mind, heart and soul.
Let flow in the dreams of God,
Of the angels, saints, prophets and sages.
Give birth and let out into the world the dreams Of your own unique, unrepeatable Cosmic Being. If not born for any other purpose,
Be born to dream, be born to love
Be born to fashion a better world.
Dreams and dreamers never die.
ONE-MINUTE WISDOM
ALWAYS THE BEGINNING
From heaven you will see your dreams come true. You will reincarnate, inspire and energise new dreamers.
The dreams of our beautiful Planet of Dreams will never die
Until we become the paradise we were always meant to be
And are about to joyfully become.
—Robert Muller
Anthony, a middle-aged monk, was on a pilgrimage, visiting Benedict his good friend, a monk in another country. Arriving at the monastery, Benedict, a gracious host and friend, welcomed Anthony, and as they started climbing a long flight of steps, said, “We have no elevators here. I apologise for the many steps we have to climb to get to your room.”
Anthony, with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, answered, “There are many steps in my home monastery too.” Then he added, “I count them as I climb. This is how I count them—one, one, one . . . !” It is always the beginning.

JUST FOR LAUGHS
THE AFTERLIFE
The pastor was talking to a group of young children about being good and going to heaven. At the end of his talk, he asked, “Where do you want to go?”
“Heaven!” cried out little Suzy. “And what do you have to be to get there?” asked the preacher. “Six feet under!” yelled little Tommy.
