1 – Required round (From MHsaa competitive cheer manual)

Total Points Possible: 240

Time limitation: Round 1 must be performed within 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Requirements: Round 1 shall be a choreographed routine containing two different jumps
performed in unison by every team member. The two required jumps must be the first two jumps
performed in the routine. Unison refers to direction of skills as well as arm, leg, and body
position. Each competitor must face the same direction in order to meet the unison requirement.
All jumps performed in Round 1 receive the same maximum value (10 points). Each competitor
must execute the requirements in order for credit to be awarded to the team.

In addition, a minimum of five floor movements (6 different formations) are required. The
formation of the team at the beginning of the routine will count as one of the required
formations.

The routine performed in Round 1 may contain jumps, kicks, level changes, peel-offs and arm
motions. Anything that requires the support of another person is illegal in this round.

The essence of Round 1 routine is to create a routine with different arm motions, floor
movement, and level changes. When choreographing a Round 1 routine and incorporating the
enhancements listed, the following three conditions should apply: many, different, and difficult.

The following categories appear on each panel judges score sheet and will be judged in this
round: Difficulty and Variety, Jumps, Vocals, Floor Mobility, Team Coordination, Execution,
General Impression, Creativity.

Difficulty and Variety:

Assign difficulty and variety points
to movements, motions, peel-offs,
level changes and ripples, etc.

Judges must keep track of what a
team peforms. The choices are not
limited to the elements of difficulty
and variety.

Awarding 10 points in variety and
difficulty for a Round 1 routine
should include 33-50% of the
difficult enhancements.

Jumps: Evaluate each of the jumps as to: Technique- form, toes pointed, backs straight, arm
positions, landing, etc. Togetherness- preps are the same, all go up together, reach same height,
land together. Ease- is completed without difficulty, height attained by entire team and ease
when landing.

Vocals: Throughout the cheer evaluate voice inflection, clarity, appropriate choice of words,
volume, diction.

Floor Mobility: Note all errors in accuracy of formation. Evaluate the effectiveness of the moves
as to whether they flow with the cheer, enhance the cheer and provide a smooth transition.

Team Coordination: Evaluate precision and timing of motions including mistakes, missed
motions, punch and crispness.

Execution: Evaluate placement and accuracy of all motions including high Vs. wrist, Ts, lunges,
leg positions, etc.

General Impression: Evaluate routine based on its uniqueness and creativity. Judge continuity,
overall impression of entire performance and team confidence. Judges are not to favor any
particular style but judge the style presented.

Creativity: A judge’s opinion of creativity, evaluated in the GI category, may include unusual
formations, difficult flairs, transitions and preps. Overall impression allows credit to be given for
a team that has given the judge a feeling of excitement, goose bumps or a WOW! Impression.

Round 2 – Required round (From MHsaa competitive cheer manual)

Total Points Possible: 234

Time Limitation: Round 2 must be performed within 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Requirements: Varsity division mandated number of competitions: D1 =12, D2 = 10, D3 = 8, D4
= 6. At the beginning of the routine each team must perform the 10- count precision drill in
unison. During the precision drill the team is not allowed to change formation.

Round 2 shall be choreographed to containing 5 different skills and only five may be selected.
All skills must be performed independently, not connected. At least one skill must be selected
from each category: flexibility, jumping and tumbling. No more than four skills from the 1.2
level may be selected OR one skill from the 1.4 level and three 1.2 level may be selected. (See
box for description and point levels).

Every team member must perform the 5 selected skills from start to finish in unison. Vocals in
Round 2 must be in unison except for calling the beginning or ending of the cheer. Penalty of 4
points will be given for vocals not performed in unison.

In order to maintain the unison requirement while making formation changes, it is expected that
each team member maintain the same body position while a formation change is taking place.
The judges recognize that varying number of steps may be needed.

Each competitor must attempt to execute the skills in order for credit to be awarded to the team.
If an attempt is not made by a competitor the safety judge will assign a 22 point penalty.

The following categories appear on each panel judges score sheet and will be judged in this
round: Precision Drill, Skills, General Impression.

Skills: Each of the five skills is evaluated in two ways. One is the execution of the skill itself.
The second is coordination among team members.

General Impression: Creativity, continuity, team confidence, floor presence, overall impression
are under this category.

10 Count Precision Drill-
The 10 count is a requirement and:
*must be performed at the beginning of Round 2
*must start in the position indicated in the rules manual
*must contain the 10 motions as written and described in the rules manual
*must be performed in two staggered lines for 4-12 competitors
*must be performed in the same arm, leg and body position as illustrated in the rules manual

*head position and movements are optional throughout the precision drill, there shall be no
penalty for head position or movement
*execution and unison in the precision drill is reflected in the score in the precision drill category
on the score sheet

Requirements and Skills list –Five skills
shall be selected from the list of skills; at
least 1 skill from each category must be
performed; flexibility, jumping or tumbling.
No more than four skills from the 1.2
difficulty multiplier can be selected OR one
skill from the 1.4 difficulty multiplier and
three from the 1.2 difficulty multiplier for a
maximum of 5.8 points for skills. FOR
EXAMPLE: OUR TEAM DOES A 1.2
SKILL OF A BACK WALKOVER, the
judge feels the back walkover is 7 points, the
judge then takes the 7 points and multiplies it
by the 1.2 (the difficulty multiplier) to get a
final score of 8.4. **Valdez, BWO and FWO
can be used in either the flexibility or
tumbling category depending on the needs
of the team.

different tumbling skill, jump, stunt and flair will be valued at one point. No variety points are
given for preps or transitions.

Difficulty of Skills Category:
Each panel judge will evaluate the difficulty of tumbling, gymnastic skills, stunts, flairs,
transitions and jumps performed on a 1 to 20 point scale. (See difficulty factoring chart).

Extensions 10

Difficulty Factoring:
In order to more equitably score teams with different numbers of competitors on the mat, the
total difficulty points earned for tumbling, gymnastic skills, stunts, flairs, preps, transitions and
jumps will be determined by each cheer judge compared to the total number of points reflected
on each rotuine description. Difficulty points are awarded on each score sheet after utilizing the
difficulty factoring chart. For example: If we compete with 9 girls in round 3 we must reach a
point total of 450 or more to earn the highest difficulty points of 20. (See chart on the next page)

Execution Category:
Each pangel judge will evaulate tumbling, jumps, gymnastic skills, flairs, transitions, all
preps/entrances and stunts for proper execution in the routine on a 1 to 20 point scale for 12 or
fewer competitors. The maximum execution value increases 20.5 for 13, 21 for 14, 21.5 for 15,
and 22 for 16 competitors.

Execution Bonus Category:
This category rewards teams that execute skills with very few errors. A team can earn up to 3
points in this category if its execution is 17.5 or above. This category has been added to
encourage good execution.

Choreography Category:
A team may receive a maximum of 8 points in this category. There are 5 possible skills/stunts to
perform. Each of the 4 is valued at 2 points and will be credited to the team’s Round 3 score
when performed the required number of times.

The number of times a skill or stunt must be performed is based on a sliding scale according to
the number of competitors on the floor. A team with fewer competitors will be required to
perform the skill/stunt fewer times to earn 2 points.

Judges are required to count the number of times a skill or stunt is performed. It is not a
requirement that different competitors perform the skill/stunt.

The skills/stunts are:
*One-leg extension stunts – credit will be given when the skill originates from elevator or below.
Braced OLE will NOT receive credit
*Team tumbling – rolls do not count. Tumbling must be on the same count but does not have to
be the same skill by all competitors
*Full tiwst to cradle or 360 flair- a team may perform both skills. A 360 flair refers to a vertical
twist by the flyer going up or down.
*Front and back tucks- the skills may be performed from a standing position or as part of a
tumbling pass

Parent Instructions for the 2017-2018 competitive cheer season

The electricity in the gym/arena is what is going to help YOUR cheer team have an
OUTSTANDING performance (ultimately win). Therefore, it is IMPERATIVE that we have
noise, support, cheers and fans in the stands. We need parent/fan support while the girls are
performing- not just the “anticipation” of taking the floor or after a skill. The team needs to hear
you throughout their 3 rounds.

YOU need to sit together and be VERY enthusiastic by:

1. Giving a standing ovation as the team is announced (holding area and on deck, while they
take the floor).

2. Start and participate in parent led chants and cheers
3. Cheering loudly after every skill or stunt during the routines
4. Go CRAZY as the team exits the mat after each round of competition

YOUR job is to show the team YOU are PRESENT for them and most of all… HAVE FUN!

Help the girls with the last impression to the judges at the end of each round. CHEER
FOR THEM, encourage and chatter. (Chattering= talking at them, yelling,
encouragement. Examples: Way to Go Eagles, Go Eagles, Fire Up Big Red, Let’s go
FHS, Eagle Pride, Nice job ladies, Go Red, etc. etc.)

IN SUMMARY, IT’S A CHEER MEET – SO CHEER.
