06 Project: Bowen Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade Client: Aquatec Maxcon - Whitsunday Regional Council Location: Whitsunday, QLD The Bowen Sewage Treatment Plant underwent an upgrade in 2019, which involved the installation of a 14,000 EP Membrane Bioreactor (MBR), odour control, aerobic biosolids stabilisation, and recycled water facilities. This upgrade has enabled the plant to treat a greater volume of recycled water to supply the Bowen Recycled Water Network. As a result, the amount of treated effluent discharged into Port Denison has significantly reduced, decreasing nutrient mass loading on the natural environment. The following measures were taken as part of the project: > A long-term on-site noise survey. > Environmental baseline noise monitoring. > The creation of noise criteria (acceptable noise levels) for the project. > Noise impact control and mitigation recommendations. > Acoustic design workshops. > Commissioning noise survey and > Acoustic documentation. Acoustic Doors for water industry Flexshield acoustic door sets; Flexshield has been supplying acoustic doors, also known as soundproof doors, since 2003 and is recognised in the market for the high quality and performance of its products. Flexshield’s acoustic doors have all been designed and laboratory tested following the exclusive Sonicfix concept, which means the doors are very easily fitted by screwing the frame in place and applying a silicon seal on each side. As there is no concrete casting, the door sets can be mounted in any support wall: concrete, metal supporting structure or timber for example. > High acoustic performance > Strong, robust and vandal resistant > Light weight and easy to operate > Weather proof > All sizes and types > Supplied ready to fit Flexshield acoustic fire door sets Flexshield also supplies a range of fire rated acoustic door sets that are pre fitted with correct hardware and finish types. Acoustic doors for water plant rooms are tested by NATA. Contact us (1300 799 969) for data sheets and specifications including drawings and specifier tools. Noise reduction properties have been rigorously tested in Australia’s leading testing centres and Flexshield doors achieved high noise reduction performance in extreme operating conditions. Additional Acoustic services for water industry Internal OHS Noise Safety Noise is not really a concern associated with the water industry – water has such tranquil connotations – however noise presents a very acute danger for those engaged in this industry. Flexshield works with water corporates to ensure that noise isn’t an issue for the general public, and also the health and well being of their staff is not at risk. In Water Treatment Plants, Pump Stations and Desalination Plants there are various pieces of noise emitting equipment (mainly powerful pumps) and workers should be aware of the risks associated with excessive exposure to noise. Flexshield can help design and implement noise exposure plans and design solutions to solve OHS noise risk. Temporary Noise Barriers During Construction Works Our Australian-made temporary noise barriers are manufactured to provide a temporary noise reduction screen around plant sites or enclosures around noisy industrial procedures such as pipe works. They are quick, safe and simple to install so you can get the job done faster. They are great for either short or long term applications and fully transportable so you can move them from site to site. These curtains are able to be hung from temporary site fencing, hoarding and scaffolding. Great for; > Night works > CBD works > Pumps > Emergency Work > Decreasing EPA noise risk Noise Walls For Local Councils Temporary Noise Barriers for pump noise control.

Snowy Hydro Turbine Noise Control Project: Snowy Hydro Turbine Noise Control Client: Snowy Hydro Location: Khancoban Hydroelectric Power Station, NSW Four turbines at Snowy Hydro’s Khancoban hydroelectric power station were making noise that was in excess of OHS standards. For the health and safety of its employees, Snowy Hydro needed to isolate one turbine from the neighbouring turbines while it was offline for maintenance. Flexshield assessed the situation on-site and determined that a noise reduction of 10 dB(A) was required. They calculated that by using a Sonic Curtain and 100mm thick absorption on the ceiling, approximately 13-15 dB(A) reduction could be achieved. To facilitate access as needed, Flexshield designed the sliding Sonic Curtain in a D-shape with all sides sliding in either direction. After completing noise level readings, they achieved an end result of 13.5 dB(A) reduction. The project was successful, thanks to the client’s collaboration, and they were very satisfied with the outcome.

18 Sydney Water Hornsby Heights Dewatering Building Project: Sydney Water Hornsby Heights Dewatering Building Client: Brewster Murray/Project Coat Location: Hornsby Heights, NSW Flexshield received a request for assistance from architect Brewster Murray, who needed help designing some acoustic doors for the Hornsby Heights Dewatering Building. The dewatering process was causing noise complaints from neighbours, and the dewatering pumps were located on the top floor, which required closing them in with access via acoustic doors at each end. The doors needed to allow passage of a gantry crane that protruded through the doorway. After a thorough review of the project and an on-site visit to assess the situation, our acoustic engineers recommended our Sonic Access acoustic doors with cut-outs for the crane rail. This was a better solution than the traditional method of installing a removable head with infill panels above. Sonic access doors provided a more straightforward installation process with better acoustic performance, saving the builder time and providing excellent noise reduction for the client. Flexshield worked closely with the building contractor, Project Coat, to supply and install the doors on time and within budget. The desired outcome for the client was achieved by reducing the noise levels and stopping the noise complaints. The client also engaged a 3rd party acoustic consultant to take sound level readings, confirming the noise treatment’s effectiveness.

Googong Dam Waste Water Treatment Project: Googong Dam was expanding their Waste Water Treatment Client: Googong Dam Location: Googong Dam, NSW The project involved modifying a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) to fit a new housing development. To ensure that the residential development would be free of issues, the client requested a noise level of 65dB(A) at a distance of 1.0m from the enclosure after treatment. Our Acoustic Engineer reviewed the blower specifications from the manufacturer and recommended enclosing the equipment with V50 acoustic panels to achieve the desired noise level of 65dB(A). The result was excellent, and although we have yet to take noise level readings, we have visited the site to inspect the finished product. The client confirmed that the plant was running so quietly that hearing the blower from outside was impossible. Custom stainless steel acoustic enclosures Googong Dam WWTP

Barwon Water Treatment Plant Pump Room Project: Barwon Water Treatment Plant Pump Room Client: Barwon Water Location: Barwon, NSW Barwon Water sought Flexshield’s assistance to resolve a hazardous noise problem in one of their treatment plant pump rooms. The room required frequent access by operators to perform plant inspections. Sound pressure levels were measured at around 93dB(A) at the walkway before installing soundproofing measures. By installing Sonic Curtains and Sonic Pads, Flexshield helped Barwon Water implement an engineering control that reduced sound pressure levels below the occupational exposure limit, with approximately 81dB(A) measurements. 22
