SEPTEMBER 2021 VACATION MAGAZINE 15 T R A V E L 2. TRAVEL LIGHT Travel photography by its very nature is inspirational and exciting – but it’s easy to get carried awaywhen you prepare what to take with you. Ideally if you choose to take your own kit you’ll need to travel light: one body (unless you have the room for a spare), a wad of memory cards, a lightweight mini tripod or even the super flexible Gorillapod, portable storage unit, a pocket-size compact, a flash unit, a selection of lenses. 3. Choose The Right Lenses Travel opens up a wide scope of genres for the avid photographer to explore, but picking which lenses to take will ultimately help or hinder you in the field. If you only have the room or budget to select one glass, opt for a fast zoom such as an 18-200mm or 28- 300m etc. Sometimes you’ll find the focal point far off in the distance, but other times it could be right under your nose, as such a variable focal length lens that starts with a healthy wide angle and follows through to telephoto is ideal. 1.KNOW YOUR CAMERA Whether you shoot on a dSLR, mirrorless, smartphone or an old film unit, the first travel photography tip is to get to know your camera equipment. Study the menu so that if you need to change camera settings in the field you’re not spending minutes scrolling through it whe timing is critical. SEPTEMBER 2021 VACATION MAGAZINE 15
16 VACATION MAGAZINE SEPTEMBER 2021 4. Shoot in the right mode Shooting in RAW and JPEG Fine will offer you greater flexibility on your return, but this will mean you’ll need to travel with a several high capacity memory cards. Get in to the habit of downloading your images to a laptop or photo storage device every night so you can free up your memory cards for the next day. When you go off shooting, take twice the amount of cards/ capacity with you than you would expect to need. 5. DO YOUR RESEARCH The best travel photography starts before you even leave home. To make the most of every destination, you first need to do your research. Look up the places you’re going to on Pinterest, Instagram, or your favourite travel blogs, find out where are the best places to go and the best time of day to go there, and get helpful advice on what gear to take. You can also search for images that inspire you and make a list of the sorts of themes and angles you’d like to get. That way, when you’re at the location, you won’t be wasting your precious holiday time searching for the right spot. 6. GET UP EARLY AND STAY OUT LATE The best times to prioritise for travel photography are around sunrise and sunset. Not only will you get the nicest light – the hours just before and just after dawn and dusk (known as blue hour and golden hour) will give you the prettiest light and the most interesting skies, but you’ll also avoid the crowds and be more likely to get those gloriously empty images of your destination that you see on all the travel websites. Yes, it can be tough to drag yourself out of bed that early, but I promise you it’s worth it!
