Second Grade Syllabus

Welcome to 2nd Grade! I am delighted to partner with you this year as you review familiar concepts
and explore new ones. This year, 2nd graders will travel to different teachers for a variety of
subjects. I will serve as the Homeroom teacher for 2nd Grade and I will also teach English Language
Arts (ELA), Bible and Science. I will serve as your coach and partner along your learning journey.
Please keep this syllabus on hand to use as a guide throughout the year. I look forward to working

Bible Overview

The Grade 2 Bible course will use the Bible (Kids/Student) This course will explore the importance
of daily prayer and Bible Study. Students will identify and practice weekly bible verses.

ELA Overview

The Grade 2 ELA course will use the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) curriculum, Bible
Hereos. This course examines the writing process through reading, and summarizing Biblical
stories. Students will learn to form and adapt stories using key word outlines and narrative stories.
We will identify different parts of speech and determine the best uses.

Course Highlight:

Units 1 & 2: Key Word Outlining and Writing from Key Word Outlines (Lessons 1-8)
In Units 1 & 2, students will identify, outline and utilize key words from stories.

Unit 3 & 4: Narrative Stories and Reports (Lessons 9-23)
Units 3 and 4 highlights the 3 parts of narrative stories and discusses how to summarize a reference.

Unit 5 & 6: Writing from Pictures and Creative Writing (Lessons 24-27)
In this unit, students practice writing from a series of pictures and learn to ask questions in order to
write without a source text.

Science Overview

The Grade 2 Science course will use the BJP Science 2 textbook. This course investigates matter,
weather, water and how things move, living things, earth and space.Through engaging activities,
reading and investigation students will discover the connection between the Bible and Science.

Course Highlight:

Unit 1: Let’s Explore Matter and Motion (Lessons 1-30)
This unit defines science and matter and explores how matter moves and changes.

Unit 2: Let’s Explore Earth and Space (Lessons 31-52)
This unit discusses natural resources, such as rocks and soil. It explores what makes up the earth
and how the earth moves.

Unit 3: Let’s Explore Living Things (Lessons 53-58)
This unit covers how plants and animals grow and change, what can be learned from fossils and
how the human body works.

Grades

Grades are calculated from 3 separate categories. Scores will be given per subject to reflect the
scores from each category. The grading scale will determine the grade for each subject.

Tests/Projects 50%

Grading Scale

A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C= 70-79%
D= 60-69%
F= below 50%
