Carnegie Mellon University began a partnership to create
an online library resource available to everyone. Their
initial goal was to create an online library that with optical

original goal and found the need to widen their scope.

of one point six million books including books in public
domain and permitted copywritten works. With funding
and advisement by the National Science Foundation and
partnerships with Schools in India and China the new
goal of the Million Book Project is to digitize and provide
OCR capability for all books.
Resources
The majority of manpower in this endeavor is provided
by the partnerships with India and China, who are
donating a profound number of man hours to this
project. Additionally, funding from the National Science
Foundation provides for the technical needs of the
project. The books digitized are primarily sourced from
donations.
