WOW!
Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is common among
young children. It is usually caused by a virus. Children
with HFMD may have fever and sore throat. They also
develop a skin rash and sores in the mouth. Red spots are
often seen on the palms and soles of the feet.
Influenza A (H1N1) infection is also caused by a virus.
An infected person suffers flu-like symptoms—fever,
headache, cough, sore throat, runny nose, muscle pain,
tiredness, vomiting or diarrhoea. More serious conditions
include breathing difficulty and sudden dizziness.
COVID-19 is yet another infection caused by a virus. The
disease appeared in 2020 and caused many deaths. An
infected person commonly suffers from fever, tiredness and
cough. More serious conditions include severe breathing
difficulties, lung infection and kidney failure.
We can prevent the spread of diseases and infections such
as HFMD and H1N1 by washing our hands with soap.

1.3 Brushing teeth
These children are brushing their teeth before going to sleep.
It is also important to brush your teeth after eating.
Food may get trapped between your teeth and cause them to
decay. You can get a bad toothache. It is very painful! Tooth
decay can make a hole in your tooth. We call this a cavity.

Look at these two plants.
This plant is
growing in water.
This plant is
growing in soil.
What do you observe about the two plants?
Plants can make their own food when there is air, water and
sunlight. However, nutrients in the soil help the plants grow
faster and bigger!
WOW!
Farmers often add fertilisers
to the soil. Fertilisers contain
nutrients that help the vegetables
and fruits grow big and healthy.

MarshallCoCpayvriegnhditsh
Some farmers are able to grow vegetables without soil! They add
nutrients into the water so that the plants grow big and healthy.

• Plants usually respond slowly to changes around them.
By observing the growth of some seeds near a window, we can see
that plants respond slowly to changes.
